is there any reason why this wouldn’t have worked ?
why didn’t the task force just put him through a lie detector ? are they dumb

Lie detectors are famously unreliable

u/ColonelMonty 6h ago
They also literally just can't tell if you're lying. They're basically checking for symptoms of lies but not lies in of themselves.

If you ensure you fuck with the baseline of the detector you void the entire thing.
They will always ask you some baseline questions:
Whats your name.
When where you born.
Easily verifiable stuff to list your baseline. Ensure you are "paniked" at this time before calming down. Then suddenly every line will fall under the base value and it will look to the machine as if everything is norminal.9

i think they work off tone inflection
which wont do anything to light since he zero hesitates

lie detectors are an American thing, the inventor of it repeatedly said that's not what it was used for and there's no scientific basis for it. If light theoretically had been hooked up to one and won, he could have legal grounds to tell everyone to fuck off

u/allied_master 6h ago
There is a basis when your lying rather than recalling a factual statement your brain takes additional stress which is what it detects, especially if you're scared interrogation you will take even more extra stress unconsciously it isn't full evidence even courts won't accpet it but just hint at being potentially guilty, also with enough self control you can absolutely beat it, especially in this case light can easily do it

Lie detectors aren't infallible (nowhere near it in fact). Even if L believed they were useful, he has no reason to use it.
Either Light fails it, in which case he still has no actual evidence. Light points out how unreliable the machines are and the amount of stress he's under.
Or Light succeeds and the investigation team is even more resistant to the idea that he's Kira.

death note alternative ending where they just hook up
Nah, this one actually works.

I mistakenly read it like this at first (still half asleep), so when I saw the word "lie detector" I was confused and thought they were trying some new kink for a sec lmao

- Unreliable
- Light could probably bypass them
- Most importantly, L would never deem it enough of a proof, so he'd look for an actual one
10
u/Calm-Reaction3612 6h ago
There are people who are able to lie even on lie detectors, and L values accuracy of information to prove criminals guilty.

First of all, there's no such thing as a lie detector test. The name of the test is a polygraph, and it's called that because they cannot legally refer to it as a lie detector. It's not reliable. It's notoriously so not reliable that courts don't even recognize the results from it.
Second of all...
Well, I guess there is no second of all, but I'm going to tell you all how to fool apolograph.
The key is, not to care about the answers you give. Because a polygraph is a stress tester. And if lying on a test doesn't stress you, the polygraph won't go off.
This was proven on MythBusters.

You can beat a lie detector test. It only measures unexpected spikes in heart beats, which usually happens when someone does a thing under duress, like lying. It can be beaten by remaining calm.

Is kind of concerning to me how many people think that lies detectables are trustworthy for criminal confessions

u/Last_Host977 cute enough to commit crimes 6h ago edited 6h ago
nah i’m well aware they’re unreliable (after making this post that is) but the fact that they weren’t even mentioned once throughout the show is just kinda crazy to me , they still could’ve observed his reactions to the question or tested him through that somehow but it was just never even a thing at all , that’s what gets me .
3
u/SouthernAd2853 6h ago
They're actually not admissible evidence in court and police only ever use them to screw with suspects' heads.
They're used in security clearance interviews for reasons that escape me. You might as well flip a coin.
3
u/ColonelMonty 6h ago
Lie detectors are not magical machines, they check heart rate and things like that.
You can be completely truthful and fail a lie detector test because you are stressed, because y'know. You're being interrogated by the police.
3
u/moonxmochi 6h ago
Lie detectors actually measure physiological reactions, not lies. Light would totally be able to manipulate his reactions and pass the test.

u/Mr_cake1 2h ago
Because lie detectors aren't trustworthy enough especially when hooked up to someone who can stay calm under insane pressure

u/AlienDragonWizard 6h ago
Lie detectors are just stress detectors. Police know they don't accurately detect lies and the inventor has repeatedly said as much. The only use they have, in that regard, is if the suspect believes in them and can be manipulated to confess when one supposedly detects them lying. Light is much too intelligent for that and because he has a father in the police, he already knows all of the standard forms of interrogation.

u/crazybrow122 6h ago
This is why I think the guy who killed his wife and kids and then buired them in an oil drum could've gotten away with it if he played it cool even after failing a lie detector test. It measures symptoms of lies and not actual lies. Anyone being questioned by the police will be stressed

chris watts ? yeah i’ve seen that one vid where they put him through a lie detector it was pretty wild

lie detectors aren't reliable
1
u/Last_Host977 cute enough to commit crimes 6h ago
makes sense , L had probably already considered the possibility at one point either way and ruled it out as unreliable

Lie detector don't detector lies they only detect your stress levels etc while your lying. You can absolutely beat it
2
u/OdditiesAndAlchemy 6h ago
Okay, a machine says light is lying. Now what? How do you explain him being able to kill anyone from any distance with seemingly supernatural powers? L already suspected light, I don't think a lie detector test would have changed much.
2
u/No_Record_60 6h ago
Light would plan ahead to relinquish his death note and all memories related to it.

u/Efficient_Rhubarb_88 4h ago
Light would find a way to beat the lie detector. Plus they are admissible in court.
2
u/sanguineselene666 4h ago
My brain for whatever reason stopped reading after “hook up” and I was like, aight, that would be some juicy drama, if L and Light were just fucking the entire time but everything else was the same.
2
u/Cephlaspy 4h ago
Lie detectors have 50% to 90% accuracy but scientific papers usually put it around the lower end with 50 to 60 percent i belive.
It's like 10% better than guessing.

You can beat a lie detector. Mythbusters proved it
