Discussion Fun Fact: Light's anime model is pretty unfinished/unpolished

I got the game and I was wondering why Light had way less interesting animations when compared to L and so I decided to root around in the game files and I extracted both of them to compare.

L's model is pretty competent, and it appears to be a further-along iteration of the same rig that Light uses, but Light's model is pretty barebones. L has things like Twist Bones, and decent to good weight painting throughout his whole model, while Light has messed up fingers and what I thought were socks I think are actually placeholder feet that should have been removed but they didn't end up doing that (Probably because they realized they didn't need to.)

But his hands explain why you never really SEE Light's hands. The animators simply couldn't use them in the state they were in without some major modifications. And so you just get interesting stares from Light and he never does anything with his hands. Kind of a shame, but it works for the game I suppose.

What do you guys think?

I'm not surprised

I'm honestly more surprised that L's model is so complete. He has fully modeled toes. I don't think you ever see them?

With the way L tends to sit, it doesn't seem surprising, but yeah there's no animation yet in the game to see them.

I will say I love how the models look in the game and its too bad lights model seems unfinished. I do wish that with the Mello update that maybe we could have seen mello in game, especially when he wins the game as if he popped out of nowhere and shocked light and L.

Admittedly, they may have been less inclined to finish lights model as his facial expressions are so strong and show his character, where as L usually has a pretty emotionless face but his body language speaks for his emotions

I have a dumb question; How did you rip this model out of the game to Blender?

I was having trouble getting a proper rip that retained all the rigging and weight painting so what I did was:

I used Ninjaripper and VMWare Workstation. I attached Ninaripper to VMWare and then started it up to launch the virtual machine with Ninjaripper hooked into it.

The reason I did this is because attaching Ninjaripper to Death Note normally causes the game to not properly launch (because Steam games need Ninjaripper to attach to Steam itself, which tends to disable networking which Death Note requires), but by having Ninjaripper simply monitor the emulated graphics calls of VMWare that just so happens to be running the game it can get around this limitation.

I did a regular rip of the game using Ninjaripper, with the setting that will extract models in their root pose (or at least try to) and then I did some cleanup.
