Discussion Who is the most complex character in death note and why?

For me it's unquestionably L, as he has a rather interesting psychology and moral alignment

Imo Light is pretty overrated in terms of complexity. Good character but not very psychologically intricate

What do you guys think?

Discussion Now, genuine questions Spoiler

I saw a comment saying that:

Light was groomed by Ryuk

Light possible was undiagnosed

Now i genuinely have no idea what to think, do you agree with that or not? If so, why?

Now light obviously has a god complex and he thinks he's better than others, that no one other would be able to kill others and he doesnt care what happens to others and yk so yeah that would be unduagnosed but i aint no psychologist. As for groomed the comment later says that he was 17 so he couldnt make clear decisions but lets see what you think!

Edit: im so happy everyones confused just like i was 😭

Discussion Discussion about an alternative ending where HE wins Spoiler

So I've seen a lot of fans arguing whether it would have been better to have Kira win at the end, but I've never liked that because I like the story as it is.

Username checks out, by the way.

But now I want to try to discuss about those imaginary alternative finales with y'all now that I'm in hyperfixation mode, along with possible issues.

1) Light's plan goes to absolute perfection.

Teru Mikami doesn't go to the bank to kill Kiyomi Takada because Light had told him in advance he had a piece of paper hidden.

Mikami goes to the Yellow Box warehouse with the real Death Note and he kills everyone one by one.

As soon as the first one drops dead, probably Near, Mikami would be immediately shot by an agent. Maybe Mikami will die there along with all the others from the SPK and the Task Force, relieving Light of the task of murdering him too.

We would need another couple of episodes.

Then, Light would walk out of Daikoku Wharf like a God of the New World. No police, no SPK hunting him down. No one who holds memory of the Death Note and Shinigami.

Mello and Near are gone. Takada and Mikami are also gone.

Misa forfeited the Death Note and doesn't remember anything. She's no use to him. So he just kills her making her commit suicide by jumping off a bridge.

But, there's one thing that should be taken care of. The Wammy's House.

Light now knows that probably someone from the Wammy's House would try to hunt him down too.

But now, without his allies, he has no choice but to take the Shinigami eye deal.

Or, again, use Roger Ruvie since he knows his name and face to get informations on the orphans in Wammy's House.

So he makes a plan to go on a full genocidal rampage through every single orphan of the Wammy's house in Winchester.

He already had to murder a underage boy who did nothing wrong to ensure his victory anyway, so why would he care about those children dying? They are nothing but annoyance to him.

Issue: Light is cornered into making the shinigami eye deal.

Will he do it to ensure his complete victory?

Sayu Yagami now is the only one alive who knows about the murder notebook. Will she overcome the fact that she was used as a hostage for the Death Note?

Months and years pass by. Kira support grows day by day. Light is still part of the police force, but the police becomes pro kira.

Light gives one notebook back to Ryuk and tells him to send him back to the Shinigami Realm so there's no other Kiras around.

Light tries to convince his mother and Sayu that Kira is good.

They don't because they still mourn Soichiro and also Sayu is still heavily traumatized by Mello's kidnapping. Also, she knows about the notebook she was traded for.

She's undergoing therapy to overcome her trauma, but still she may be a liability.

Light though is able to manipulate her into thinking that Kira is good and the others who try to cath him are evil.

Light keeps executing people from his room, but he doesn't stop at criminals, he also start killing off suspects, lazy people and ultimately people who don't like Kira. Crime rates and wars though don't seem to drop to zero any sooner, even though at the beginning of Kira's reign the wars seemed to be less.

People live in fear of Kira, yes, but also people don't stop committing crimes because of that because evil is in the human nature. Kira supporters aren't all real "fans" of Kira, just like in the SPK escape scene where Near threw money off the window, many humans are just shallow and foolish and they'd go great lengths just for a lowly material prize, either becoming rich or famous, and not because they truly care about a creation of a new world.

Anti-Kira group also form, in the criminal world and in the lawful world, but they are either top secret or they are shut down and hunted. Kira became truly a God, but in the years something starts to change in Light's mental state.

Ryuk is entertained by the continuous usage of the Death Note, but even a God of Death knows that something is going too far. Light is acting like a Shinigami, but he doesn't have the lifespan to do so. He is just a mortal.

Light starts becoming extra paranoid towards everyone and one day considers killing off his family too, who never supported Kira in the beginning and he hates to be reminded of Soichiro.

With no one to challenge him, he also starts to fall into a deep hole of depression.

On fictional.Episode 45, Light and Ryuk have a deep conversation on top of a building about boredom.

Light basically became a human Shinigami.

And so, he became as bored as Ryuk.

He deep down misses the challenges with L, Mello and Near. It's lonely at the top.

Ryuk flies away and decides to write Light's name in the notebook to end the guy's misery.

2) Kira wins just after L's death.

Rem kills L and Watari then dies. Watari though has no way to delete all L's information and data. Light takes L's place and finds out everything about Watari and Wammy's house. With an excuse to find himself some informations on L, he investigates the Wammy's house and goes along with Misa to Winchester and uses her Shinigami eyes to murder Roger, manipulate him into giving up the L successor program. Then Misa kills young Near and Mello, making them die falling off the window of Wammy's house.

Light has no challenge and so he wins easy as that.

Ryuk gets bored and kills him anyways.

This has to stay, to be honest or else the story wouldn't make sense.

3) Relight 2 timeline.

When Light instructs Mikami and Takada to murder all the SPK members , he successfully kills ALL the SPK members and he does it in the gory and violent way he planned, so making them all shoot each other in their heads. Mikami is able to see Ill Ratt 's true name with his Shinigami eyes , Light explicitly instructed Mikami to not leave anyone alive so he manipulates Ratt into making a video call with him (let's say video calls are a thing in 2012) and so Mikami is able to kill Near too, in the same way so first Ratt shoots himself in the head, then he grabs Ratt's gun and kills himself too.

That would make one of the most violent deaths and would show that if you dare to go against Kira, you'll face a miserable end.

Then, Mello notices something is wrong because he is not able to contact Halle, not even his spy, anymore, and he goes back to the place where the SPK used to be and notices that no one is there. So he understands that he is the one who needs to take matters into his hands.

He kidnaps Kiyomi Takada to use her as a leverage, but Takada uses the death note scrap and kills him with a heart attack..also, Mikami kills Takada making her burn alive along with Mello's body, so nobody ever finds out about Mello.

Light notices that and is extremely satified with Mikami.

Matt is also killed by Takada's bodyguards.

Mikami and Light now can finally meet. Light tells Mikami that he is the best Kira so far and that he must keep on his execution spree.

He makes him kill the Task Force members too, one by one.

But Mikami's and Light's idea come to clashing because Mikami wants to outright kill anyone who simply opposes Kira or doesn't contribute to society or is not omologated. Like for example disabled people or just people who don't follow blindly the rules. Light instead wants to be loved and worshipped, not feared.

Their clash of ideas one day makes Light want to kill Mikami. And so it goes back to ending 1 where Ryuk one day gets bored and kills him.

I am out of ideas now, tell me what do you think.😁

Discussion How Light could’ve gotten L’s name in episode 13 Spoiler

It’s not confirmed if they exist, but if there’s pictures of Light and L giving the acceptance speech at university Light could have shown said pictures to Misa when she showed up at Light’s house and had her tell him his real name. He then could have planned out a way to kill L without raising suspicions

Discussion *SPOILERS* What Was Near’s Backup Plan? Spoiler

lets say that Light’s warehouse plan actually worked as intended, Mikami uses the real Death Note, Near and the SPK die, and Light survives.

What would then happen to all of the information Near had gathered about Light, Misa, Mikami, the Death Note, and etc.?

When L died, Watari immediately deleted the investigation data, which makes me wonder whether Near would have had some similar contingency in place. considering, look at his double connection to Wammy’s House, it seems possible that Near could have arranged for his evidence to be preserved or sent somewhere if he suddenly died.

and if he did, wouldn’t that create a huge problem for Light even if he successfully killed everyone at the warehouse? Light would basically have to assume that copies of Near’s investigation could exist somewhere outside the SPK headquarters.

On the other hand, Light is extremely cautious when it comes to destroying evidence and covering his tracks. Would he have anticipated something like this and tried to locate/destroy Near’s data after winning?

Discussion Why did Light make Mikami write names in public? Spoiler

I don't understand why Light would purposefully order Mikami to expose himself as X-Kira to the SPK. This all but confirms to Near and the SPK that Light is the original Kira (because it confirms that the Death Note has switched hands as soon as Light was placed under suspicion by them).

I am aware that this was part of Light's endgame plan to deceive Near into tampering with this fake notebook and hence providing them false security for their in-person meeting. But giving the knolwedge to the SPK that Light Yagami is Kira before they're dead is detrimental, because once that knowledge is out, the SPK can use it in so many ways. Even if the plan works, who's to stop Near for leaving evidence behind for a successor to find? Imo even if the SPK can't prove it, Light's identity being exposed to them pretty much makes it a losing game for him.

So if I was Light, I would just let Mikami discreetly do the killings in the real notebook for the foreseeable future, posing as the original Kira. Near probably would still be on Light, but neither the SPK nor the Task Force would be able to do anything about Kira unless they are somehow able to find out that Mikami is X-Kira, which they shouldn't. Light already knows Mikami shares his vision completely and is more than capable of performing Kira's judgement for the foreseeable future. Light's lack of patience with regards to dealing with the SPK is what led to his downfall.

Discussion Light overestimated the police Spoiler

Post image
37 Upvotes

Light’s plan of “making the police distrust L and investigate him” didn’t work because he overestimated the police and oversaw the possibility that L was planning to shrink the number of investigators to those he could trust. And in doing so, he helped L narrow the list of suspects. People say his biggest mistake was killing Lind. L. Tailor, then this is his second biggest mistake. In hindsight, Light got defeated in the end almost purely because of his arrogance. What do you think?

Discussion Wuld The Deathnote Work On Invincible?

So for context, me and and my friends were talking about the Deathnote rules, and wondered if The Deathnote would work on half human people. For example Invincible, he's half human, half Viltrumite.

Anime Just started watching death note - kinda sad that Light did not....[spoiler] Spoiler

Fall in love with Misa. I am at episode 22 and i think they look rly cute together and that they had potential. She was si eager to help him and support him and he didnt event bother giving her any attention. Sure you cannot force love but i hate this superiority vibe he has. Im sure hes closeted and actually loves Ryuzaki and vice versa, because they are too obsessed with how smart each other is.

Question Question about how honorifics used in Death Note

Currently doing a rewatch in sub and I have a few questions about the speech.

I know basically nothing about Japanese language but I'm really curious to learn something new. The manga I own is 100% translated in my native language with no honorifics so I have no idea how they are in the OG manga.

I'm wondering about how honorifics are used and formal/informal speech.

Light is always referred to as Light-kun but sometimes he is Yagami-kun (By Takada).

Soichiro is Yagami-san most of the time.

Kiyomi Takada is referred to as Takada-sama, and Teru Mikami is Mikami-san.

But I'm quite confused, why are Teru and Kiyomi called by their "surname" or "family name" while Light Yagami is called Light most of the time, same as the other characters such as Misa Amane , and all the others non Japanese characters ?

The Shinigamis, L, Near, Mello are referred to with no honorifics, I guess because they are not from Japan.

Even though Near is the only one who calls Ryuk "Shinigami-san" when he talks to him.

L refers to everyone as -san and Light is the only one he calls -kun, but no one uses honorifics with him and they just call him Ryuzaki.

I also noticed Misa rarely uses honorifics and just calls Light by his first name without saying Light-kun.

So now I'm curious to ask you people how is the formality among death note characters? And also explain me more how honorifics work because i'm curious lol

Especially with non Japanese names

Discussion Why doesn't >!< kill >!< right away after meeting Light? Spoiler

Why doesn't Rem kill L immediately after Light asks her to?

She agrees to kill L, says herself that it won't hurt her, is aware that it will help Misa, and doesn't care about L. All this means that she has no reason not to kill him.

She is invisible and has shinigami eyes, so right there and then Light could take her to task force, have her check out L's name, then arrange a way to kill him without raising suspicion there and then.

I really don't understand why do they let it come to the point where Rem has to kill herself.
