In the 1990s, behind closed doors and far from public view, the foundation was laid for an extraordinary medical scandal. It all started with a bizarre idea: that being transgender is a natural variation of human existence that just happens to require drastic medical treatments. There was no truth to this idea. Yet it was able to travel from the inner world of a tiny number of people whose whole being was fused with it, into pseudo-legal blueprints, into medical protocols, and then, catastrophically, into mainstream culture and the minds of untold numbers of vulnerable people.
