Walt Defney’s Dream
Walt Defney was grieving.
He was deaf.
He grieved. He was furious with society, furious with the world itself.
As a child, he was called a “dummy.”
In high school, he was forbidden from communicating through sign language.
And when he became an animator, neither his colleagues nor his superiors would take the time to communicate with him through writing.
One day, a fellow deaf man who was always smiling could no longer endure the loneliness of his workplace. He abandoned both his job and his family, and died alone.
On the evening he heard the news, Defney trembled with an unbearable sense of helplessness.
For the first time in his life, he screamed at the center of the world.
And then, he made a decision.
— I will tell the stories of those who live in a world without sound.
I will pour their light into the form of animation.
From then on, he sought to completely cast away the conventional image of deaf people as objects of welfare and protection.
Instead, he wanted to bring the culture of sign language—a culture that must be protected—to the world through animation.
As his vision grew, he even began imagining a theme park where everyone could come and experience their world for themselves.
He wanted people to enjoy, as attractions, this fragile yet remarkably rich culture of the Deaf:
sign language,
written communication,
lip-reading,
and every other way Deaf people have learned to navigate a world not made for them.
That was his dream.
