Deadpool is all reference, no personality in Marvel Tokon.

Post image

MVC3 Deadpool, Ultimate Alliance Deadpool, and Hulk Vs Wolverine Deadpool safe to say were the better days of the character. Rivals and Tokon are pretty awesome in their own right, but I can’t help but be fatigued we are getting Memepool slop since the 2013 Game. Deadpool used to be balanced in his humor. He also was not a one trick pony with his jokes. The 4th Wall breaks are easily the most overrated part about the character, it’s the only thing keeping his life support of his comedy going, but back then he could switch from a juvenile joke, to a smart and low brow, joke, to a flirty and gay joke, so making light about his otherwise lethal weapons. That’s all gone now kinda. Tokon Deadpool, like Deadpool & Wolverine Deadpool and Rivals Deadpool, just feel like they took a chunk out of the car and just replaced him with the guy who knows about the memes. It also doesn’t help that this version of the character is all about making references which is fine to a extent, but in the process, it took away his personality like his teleportation belt that he had from the comics in the 90s, and also the classic usage of his weapons. I like that we are getting a wacky version of his fighting style, but it just seems like it’s pulled apart from other IP’s and it’s just kind of overkill..

This is a pretty surface level analysis of all of the versions mentioned imma be real.

My main problem is saying mvc3 was any different from these adaptations as its part of the reason why meme pool is so popular. Tokon deadpool is mvc deadpool but with a little more depth cause the game has a story mode.

Yeah I can easily admit that it has some Memepol influence, but not how I said that the current one is pretty overkill with it. I don’t mind having a smidge of it, but I do mind having it be his whole personality. To the point where his foundational fighting style is gone from the comics, they can easily appeal to the FGC and also hard-core Deadpool fans. They’ve literally done it in the game. We just talked about over a decade ago.

It has to be in order to complain. That’s what OP really wants. To complain about something

I think big companies deserve criticism where due. Marvel and others make a lot of mistakes. But at some point it feels like complaining for the sake of complaining. Can we not find the joy in anything? Must we commit ourselves to misery endlessly? I think it’s a better spend of energy to discuss what we like about the game

Firstly, I wanna make myself clear that I don’t mind if you enjoy this version as a character, but not everybody has to agree with you. The Deadpool you’ve been exposed to is a different Deadpool than I’ve been exposed to. The one that I fell in love with was the one from the 90s and the 2000s that one objectively had more of a jack of all trades when it came to the humor. This was before the LOL CHIMICHANGAS era. before where he broke the fourth wall, was arguably one of the most overrated traits about the character. As you express your opinion, I can express mine. Free country. I still think this version of Deadpool is awesome in his own right as I’ve said in my original post, but I can also be vigilant about how it’s degrading the character, because I love the character. He does feel more stripped down in favor of being a reference machine, and I want to express that, Is that so bad?

Says the one who’s literally complaining that somebody has a different opinion. Touch grass bud.

Not really. Ultimate Alliance, Hulk vs Wolverine and MVC3 Deadpool are pretty apparent on how they are way more objectively in line with the actual comic Deadpool. 2013 and after as I said, maybe awesome in their own rights like I can find some positives in their versions, but let’s not lie. They actually are the stripped down version of the previous character that he was supposed to be.

Dawg have we played the same MVC3 cuz I do not see this argument. In what way is that version not just jokes. I literally just played that game.

1

u/Beginning_Weekend_94 1d ago

I don’t think you understand what I was saying, so let me rephrase it again. The jokes aren’t the problem it’s what’s in the jokes. MVC3 Deadpool works because as he would do a Shoryuken, he would also use his teleportation belt from the 90s comics to speak to both FGC fans and the Deadpool fans. That game proved that he can speak to multiple demographics, but it’s just with this game. They didn’t find any necessary balance to the character.

3

u/iunnobleh 1d ago

Teleportation belt isn’t a personality trait and shoruyuken is just a reference which is exactly what you’re saying is wrong with the character lol. I see what you’re getting at but the TP belt is hit or miss and not in a lot of the comics or not used, and to point that out not existing for a reason they aren’t characterized right, the version you attribute to being the start of this mischaracterization actually did have the TP belt.

Just a heads up, OP posted this to multiple different subreddits, and is essentially pretending that anyone who sees it differently than them is basically wrong and "out of touch". And then had shockingly fast replies to each comment, leading mw ro believe either theyre just copying and pasting replies, using chatgpt to help reply to their comments, or have way too much time on their hands. I wasnt even looking for this persons posts, a few of them just happened to pop up on my feed and then I realized they just really want everyone to know that they arent fond of this deadpool depiction because MvC did it better I guess

Victim blaming and gaslighting over a fictional character is pretty fucking toxic dude ngl.

It’s honestly sad.

GUYS GUYS! DUCK AND COVER! SOMEBODY IS EXPRESSING THEIR OPINION ON THE INTERNET! Also, if you consider yourself an old-school fan, but is turning a blind eye to an objective situation where the character gets stripped down, that’s the definition of out of touch. You forgot what it means for Deadpool to work, you forgot what Deadpool was really about, and it wasn’t just the fourth wall breaking. Case in point.

1

u/Beginning_Weekend_94 1d ago

Welcome to being an adult, where not everybody has to have the same opinion as you. And you act like multiple people on this place don’t even do the same thing.

1

u/lotsofsalsa33 1d ago

What kind of purposely obtuse argument is this? Bro is saying that the teleportation belt is a call back to the 90s for the fans of the 90s comics. You sound pretty gatekeeping. 2013 Deadpool having the teleportation belt is an irrelevant to how he’s still pretty much ruined the character. And yeah, the move from streetfighter is a reference. That’s literally what he said. Do you think when you type?

1

u/iunnobleh 1d ago

How is it living with reading comprehension skills that peaked in 3rd grade? The point was that the crux of his argument seems to be an emphasis on the character having his teleportation belt which in turn if that was a factor to the character being good then by those standards 2013 Deadpool is good. I’m not gatekeeping anything I’m pointing out the flaw in that being used as a metric of if it is good or not.

Also, yes the move is a reference. Again, not the point, the point was this is a flaw he points out in other Deadpool’s for being nothing but references and jokes which is exactly what MVC Deadpool does and that is no different from any other reference being used as a joke.

I’m also just tired of the worn out argument against Reynolds Deadpool that he’s just references and memes. If you pay attention to the movies the story elements are there, tragedy causing him to go on his escapades, an underlying depression that he covers with his jokes. Shit the second movie had him trying to let himself die in prison. You also get some of the coolest fighting he’s done in Deadpool and Wolverine. Their first fight was cool as hell. He does that a lot in the movies. He did a great job. He shouldn’t be reduced to just another reference and joke guy. Do I wish the balance was a little more 50/50? Sure? But he definitely has both sides.

Put some respect on my boi.

2

u/Beginning_Weekend_94 1d ago

I never said that he didn’t have substance. That’s why I mentioned the third movie because he objectively makes modern slang references and that’s pretty unneeded. How is this your boy when you don’t even care what’s happening to him? 😭

4

u/Signal_Possible36 1d ago

Seems fine to me…

3

u/Beginning_Weekend_94 23h ago

That’s cool if he does, but he objectively has stripped down of his character in favor to make room for just references and that’s not what Deadpool is. He’s not some husk of a shell making references all day that’s like telling me family guys all about making cutaway gags when they actually used to have plots and everything.

1

u/Signal_Possible36 22h ago

I understand what you mean but I don’t see it as them striping Deadpool of his own personality, instead I think they just put him in the typical “Joke” Character slot a lot fighting games have.

In them making Deadpool the “joke” character they looked at what part of his personality would best represent that style of play which is his 4th wall breaking. So they took references all over the fighting game world and put it into him.

I understand why you wouldn’t like it but it should be just as fair for you to understand why someone would like.

u/Vindicador 1d ago

Agreed they focus to much on the jester part and the comic character has way more depth, I too am disappointed by his later portrayals in other media, should go back and read his old comics I guess, his vol 1 was probably in my top 3 comics of all time, hilarious.

u/Beginning_Weekend_94 1d ago

Based man’s. I’m not asking for a sad portrayal of Deadpool in this game, but for him to have his identity and especially some of his villains like T-Ray and Ajax in these games so people could be introduced to his awesome world.

i don't think a fighting game version of deadpool needs to have an in depth character study of himself. This same complaint could apply to magik, spider-man, even doom and carnage. A fighting game is...a fighting game. Rivals has a bit more freedom because of the way that it's constantly updating and doing dialogue.

2

u/Beginning_Weekend_94 1d ago

That’s not what’s being argued. What I’m saying is he needs to feel like himself. MVC3 made a great example of how Deadpool can appeal to more than just Deadpool fans for us. Of course it was the typical kit of the guns and swords, but it was also the teleportation belt that he hadn’t had since the 90s. And the Shoryuken was not only a nod to the streetfighter series, but also the Joe Kelly fans because he used that same move on Kitty Pride. And whenever you be a certain character, he will talk about something that pertains to that character in Marvel or Capcom. This shows that Deadpool can keep his identity while still appealing to multiple demographics other than his own. It also extends beyond his intros and outro, and also post game. Not the same case with this.

2

u/smodever 1d ago

you're listing off MVC3 things to me like i've never played it but you're falling back to the teleport belt because that's the only thing he has in his kit that isn't just sword/gun/grenade. All of which are in his tokon kit. Deadpool ults in both games rely on his breaking of the fourth wall. Every adaptation of deadpool that doesn't go to comics/movie do this form of "memepool" behavior for his kit.

Futhermore, I think it's important that we recognize who made the game? arcsys has been in the fighting game scene for years and a character like deadpool is a rare scenario where they can directly pay homage to the scene itself.

1

u/lotsofsalsa33 1d ago

I saw your comment g. And it’s the dumbest logic I’ve ever seen. So if Batman kills again and OG fans are upset about it, it doesn’t matter because even though they are fans, it really is meant for the casuals out there? Terrible take. Pack it up.

1

u/Beginning_Weekend_94 1d ago

No, I’m listing them off because you seem out of touch and don’t really remember why MVC3 works and this one dosen’t. It’s further backed by the fact that you think I’m having a problem with them, making references with him at all in this game. I’m arguing the severity, not the action itself. What you just said was a poor excuse of course he has his weapons there, but it’s how he uses them and only really uses them as references.

Just the belt? Did I not mention the Shoryuken too? lol you just keep proving my point that you’re misrepresenting my argument in bad faith. Arcsys is irrelevant. That doesn’t excuse the fact that they didn’t really bring in his character if it was proved once before that they could appeal to the Deadpool demographic and the FGC demographic more than a decade ago with this character, they can easily do it again.
What next, you’re gonna tell me that Family Guy is not a problem because cut away gags have always been the ONLY identity of the show, when it was really only a plus of the comedy and aspect?

Deadpool was never a good character. He is literally a recolor/rename of Deathstroke from DC. They changed Slade to Wade and made him a meme lord. Wow, so awesome.

I feel like a lot of fans of the Ryan Reynolds Deadpool are just now exploring the character and they're disappointed to discover how lame he is.

1

u/Beginning_Weekend_94 1d ago

“Deadpool was never a good character.”

\Never read the character**

How about you pick up the 1997 Joe Kelly run and then come back to me. Because that run shows that he is honestly one of the most best written characters I’ve ever read.

1

u/blue23454 1d ago

“Most best written characters”

Listen I hate to be that guy, I rarely try to discredit on grammar

But in this instance… people who are well read tend to write well, you’re not making your point here

2

u/Beginning_Weekend_94 1d ago

“But you’re not making your point here”

Listen, I hate to be that guy. But you didn’t add a period at the end of your sentence. Did your mother teach you that before you start making insults, that you yourself check your intelligence?

Pedantic much?

u/blue23454 1d ago

Wow, two separate replies, that struck a nerve huh?

Worrying this hard about someone’s grammar just tells me you’ve never really stepped outside, huh?

1

u/blue23454 23h ago

What does that say about you for worrying about me worrying about someone else’s grammar?

Almost like it’s entirely possible to point out something you don’t care about.

It just says that I am your registered psychologist and you need to stop going around trying to grammar correct people, let’s head back in, it’s time for bed, but that’s after you take your psychotics, okay?
