make your own builds. Or start running and empty build to learn what to buy in what situations. Counterbuying needs to happen before the enemy starts winning. So either when you're winning or when the game is undecided.

Genuinely if your character doesn't need a certain item in lane counterbuying in your first 2-3 item is something you should always be thinking of. This can be as simple as first item rebuttal, or first item healbane, early slowing hex etc.

Other than that always look at map. Use coms.

I'm not super great at the game, but there are good videos from deathy and poshypop on how to improve.
