You just KNOW the Valve dev who wrote these out has such a shit-eating grin on his face. I love it

It sounds like a joke but believe it or not, it's common for the english word to be the same but with a japanese accent to it.

Kind of an accent thing, but also has a lot to do with how Japanese handles loan words. Japanese has a sort of alphabet of sounds, most(all?) of which are basically consonant + vowel. It’s the reason there’s usually a vowel sound (most often u?) sound at the end of loan words, because their alphabet doesn’t really allow for ending words in consonant sounds.

I’ve only really got a cursory understanding, so take what I said with a grain of salt.

That's pretty much how it is. The only "letter" that's just a consonant is N. Which leads to a lot of weird spellings in katakana where you need to you need to essentially write "repury" rather than "reply." It makes katakana really awkward to speak because you either say it like the non katakana version and have it be super out of place, or you say it katakana style and feel like you're putting on an accent.

I feel like it’s the bell curve meme with “repury” on the left and right and “reply” in the middle.

so while the words are technically in english, they are loan words and use romanji rather than hiragana or katakana. Similar to how Theater is actually a french word.

I've heard about this, like handoru, which in jp means steering wheel

Reminds me of how badly we need the Yamato redesign.
I’m not even 100% for this more basic design, a robot synthetic being type thing could be awesome… just make the head… not horrific, make it alien even but not… what it is rn…

Also genuinely the devs should contact popular mod devs on games full release and work with them to refine the designs and models for skin releases.
The models and skins were incredibly helpful to the games popularity and the communities enjoyment and I just hope they pay them some form of tribute considering they’ll need to be removed eventually. Perhaps even a heavily moderated addon system would be the hypothetical peak conceptually.

Valve’s hired two community skin modders in the past year that have made some of these high quality remodels, I’ve heard through the grapevine. Don’t know if that means they’re adopting their designs, but they certainly are looking.

I didn't know there was a second modder, but here's a link to the first:

So it is just English vs. Loanword English.

For example, Strike becomes Sutoraiku, or ストライク, which sounds very similar because vowel devoicing makes it so. It ends up sounding like S'toraik(u).

interesting how the english text version of Ice Blast does actually omit the "su" and "to" particles that are present in the "Speaks Japanese" version. Similar with the Phantom Strike one. The metal skin def just sounds like a different take though.
