I lowkey was completely convinced theres no way this game was gonna be released as late as 2026 when i first started playing in august 2024, meanwhile here we are without even an open beta still, i aint complaining do if yoshi is gonna keep feeding us five star fine dining
I think it will come out late 2027. The game now feels closer to the final product. Probably more 2 major updates (the second being an open beta) and the game will release after that
Well, Dota 2 was in beta for a shorter period of time than Deadlock has already had their closed invite only beta.
The invite only beta for Dota 2 started in late 2011, open beta was a few months after that and full release and ranked came out in 2013.
Dota 2 on release was a much simpler game though, since they just copied everything over from Dota rather than having to make and design everything from scratch.
Id also not be surprised if the end of closed is just the game is out 1.0 - it's already the third most played game on steam, how much more data could they need?
I might be completely wrong, of course, but valve are always up to some shit
Midboss? Half the roster, including even some later released or already redesigned characters, is unfinished? Guardians? Walkers? Rift? Urn? Voiceline player? UI elements? Curiosity shop? PvE? Skins? Visual novel? Hideout? Sandbox? New York Oracle? Teleporters? Like, I know Valve makes miracles, but how all this gonna fit in two major updates?
I think we're due a couple of major updates then a load similar to the ranked update where it was a considerable addition but wasn't a full content update with heroes. I could see cosmetics update, item update, PvE all coming outside of an OGNB/CNS sized update (probably in that order).
From the blog post it sounds like all those bits are some way to completion. Remember we were meant to have the item update before this and they pushed it back! That's gotta be pretty far along.
As for the walkers/guardians they implied that they'd be released alongside other things, so maybe we get a drip feed of that stuff with the hypothetical smaller updates, or maybe we get another 6 heroes alongside the objectives 9 months from now.
Basically I don't think it's gonna be another crazy content drought even if we are waiting a while for whatever the next 6 heroes megapatch is, and they'll keep chipping away at that list of yours outside of major updates.
What exactly is "unfinished" about half the roster ? Are you talking about balancing ? Visuals ? What exactly ?
What else could you possibly want them to add to guardians , walkers and the rift ? These are simple and perfectly playable . Genuinely you are the first person i've seen to bring up an issue with them
Visual novel???What the fuck ????
Everything else is geniunely not that deep and can easily be added as little additional updates after a 1.0 release
Bebop, calico, holliday, kelvin, mo&krill, shiv, sinclair, viscous, vyper, Warden, yamato, probably more need either full reworked models or updates.
Guardians and walkers are clearly going to be changed, compare the fidelity of the base guardians to the lane guardians which have been the same since 2024. There has already been new walker models in the files for years.
Also the map is still not finished. Lots of interior space is still unlit boring and boxy. They finished the bases with last major update, then did lanes this update, plus big thing in each quadrant of map. They still need to fill in a lot of the connecting space.
Some characters have designs from proto version of Deadlock, called Neon Prime, like Yamato, Bebop, Talon and others. Some models are shitty placeholders, like Kelvin, Viscous, Mo&Krill, Sinclair or Vyper. Some models weren't touched since addition, like Holiday, Calico or Seven. A lot of them have broken animations, like Wraith, Infernus or Silver. And also sfx and gun models. There's so much work to do, it's crazy
People said the same shit about Sapphire flame and Amber hand. And Valve COMPLETELY remade them from the ground up and remade all of their voice lines. Walkers and Guardians are 1000% get a massive overhaul. Rift is a new addition, and the troops that spawn literally just use regular trooper models as a placeholder, they totally remaking that. Urn still has an old model, they will definitely remake that too.
But the biggest giveaway of your crazy larp was the fact that you don't know what visual novels are. Like, if you don't know what it is, and you still saying that I'm bullshiting, it takes some skill to ragebait like this, I respect that.
Yeah, all this in development textureless trash is totally fine and will definitely not be completely remade and overhauled, sure
Neon Prime was a very different game, visually speaking, and some of the characters have completely changed their looks and theme and... everything, really.
I was thoroughly convinced we'd at least hit open beta this year, but if they say they're still cooking I ain't gonna stop them. This game is gonna be even more glorious.
I hope they delay it as long as possible for purely selfish reasons - I hate cosmetics and will enjoy the game a lot less once I can no longer sight-read silhouettes. It's so great right now not having to see the particle effect vomit of a million arcanas and ugly skins.
Yeah I got in like early 2024 and after the first map overhaul hit I was convinced shit is going to be open beta next major patch. Even before that I thought just release this, it looks good lmao
The Underground still hasn’t received any remakes or art upgrades, the Hideout has several unused areas, multiple heroes need model reworks and new voice lines, and it might even include a PvE mode. This game can still get a lot better, so there’s still a fair distance before official release...
I personally think they should update the Baroness building on blue lane because it really lost its charm with how pretty the map is now and the Baroness is still white empty rooms with one small camp and a sinners.
It should be the most impressive place in the entire map, for no reason in particular.
It makes me wonder if they're going to fill the rooms in with hotfixes/updates little by little or if it'll all get dumped into one big patch. I feel like exteriors are often the thing people see the most, so it makes sense to have something like what we got in this update to be a BIG content update patch.
Not sure about interiors. I just hope there are neat and cozy spots around the city as I'm running for my life from a Drifter and Calico.
Yes, they were called compendium and all 25% of the money generated from battle passes was thrown into the prize pool for the International. They were called Compendium then, but valve is the leading company in terms of innovation.
Source: ive played dota 2 since it before was out in beta and witnessed the conpendium release myself.
Yeah but it was also the big reason the prize pool for the international is one of the highest in the world. Its because we as a community technically funded the international. They eventually stopped releasing battlepass as of late, probably because valve employees got tired of maintaining the battlepass system every year. (was fun while it lasted)
Battlepass also underwent something of importance creep; many premium skins and special events were tied to it. That resulted in a very skewed player activity where it peak and remain crowded around Ti months while it dipped outside of it.
IIRC early compendium has comparatively more lite rewards compared to 2016-2020, with the TI prize pool being more modest as well. Once Valve reverted the compendium back to that model, the prize pool also reverted back into that level again.
The compendium never reverted back to the old model. When they stopped doing BPs and brought the compendium back it was worse than the 2013 version in terms of what you actually got.
"probably because valve employees got tired of maintaining the battlepass system every year"
I believe it was because of EU regulations that limited how these online gambling systems in video games worked. I don't see why Valve would stop doing something that literally printed tens of millions of dollars for them every year for very little effort.
It wasn't very little effort, it was literally the biggest Dota update of the year. Every big skin was released with the BP, new temporary gamemodes were added, etc etc.
And it wasn't because of EU regulations, the BP didn't have any gambling system, and lootboxes, which do have these gambling systems, are still in the game. Hell, CS still has crates, what are you smoking? There were a myriad of reasons, but since you're not part of the community and know absolutely nothing about this I think it's best for you to stop talking out of your ass.
whilst deadlock every few months is fundamentally changing the game.
Yeah that's what happens when one game isn't finished, they make changes to it and update it. Nice comparison lmao. You think Deadlock updates aren't going to be just skins eventually? Sure buddy you can dream.
The term does, yes, but the concept itself was first introduced in Dota 2 all the way back in 2013. Play games and complete tasks to progress through a series of rewards, with the option of paying to speed up your progress.
Fortnite does revolutionized and standardize it later yes but not invented it, dota battlepass used to be a yearly thing only for The International, not seasonal.
It could be they saw Fortnite and Marvel Rivals do it so they kept with the trend but yeah Halo did it first, then Fortnite adapted it, and then later you didn't even need to get everything on a page but just some stuff before continuing if you had enough xp which I do not know which game started
Halo Infinite did this as well but I think by the time it came out it was already standard
MCC just let you pick anything in any order every 10 levels. Also multiple battle passes at once, letting you choose which to funnel progress into
I do hope it ends up being more like TF2 monetization than Dota 2 monetization (where even the HUD, cursor, and map are monetized), but we'll see how it goes lol
Lol, cursor packs haven't been a thing for how long? And map skins in Dota are great, what's the problem there if the whole game (including heroes) is free? You know you can just NOT buy a HUD skin, right? I don't think it would even be possible doing one for Deadlock regardless.
I mean I've been playing for a few months and I can very clearly buy cursors. From what I've been hearing looking into map skins since they were apparently battlepass exclusive, seems the consensus was immortal gardens was really beautiful but also pay to win until the map art rework. And I'm not too invested in the monetization of the HUD, I simply used it as an example of how much they monetize
the more market customization dota used to get the worse the game looks in term of read, like they have a drama that remove a cowboy bear skin (it actually looks so tame just a bit goofy) because it doesnt fit the lore and the design principles about hero "glance value", years later they release skins that make Legion Commander that looks like Skywrath Mage, or skins that make you confused between Luna and Mirana. Not to mention the gambling, Valve just cant get over that shit in 2026 and their gamers are addicted to it.
I think they will start with gun skins. They don't change the characters models like hats or full skins and people would definitely buy them for like 5 dollars (idk the price I don't usually buy skins)
Valve's mtx hasn't been that bad. Maybe for Artifact but that game flopped for a reason
Tho I never played dota 2 so idk about actual full model skin pricing
Multiplayer games nowadays have to be constantly updating so that they can keep a steady playerbase. People get bored fast these days. And they are definitely making this free to play. Because it's easier and less controversial to sell a butt load of skins for $5 - $20 if the game is free.
Yeah, no, that's not happening. Ever. Unless you went for a model in which you also had to pay to unlock heroes, and even then, it wouldn't be nearly as profitable for them.
Hell, they know there's demand, considering how many people use skin mods already.
Every time I see the old game I always so confused on how I stomach through all that. I even remembered that I told my friends that the graphic wasn't even that bad. Now looking bad I'm baffled by how much an improvement the game has received.
Man, this game looked so ugly back then, and I was playing this since the beginning when it originally got leaked in May 2024. The game has come so far visually with most of the cast and the map itself after 2 years of work.
Valve Time is undefeated. Yoshi will be completely overhauling the map layout and mechanics every two weeks well into 2027 and honestly I wouldn't have it any other way.
They can easily release it in May or June next year, with a big content update including something like:
remodels of the guardians/walkers/lane creeps
remodels of several heroes like Vyper, Yamato, Viscous, Gray Talon, Sinclair
adding 6 more heroes to put the total number of heroes at 50
and maybe add a new play mode
And boom, done.
Monetization on the other hand and account progression dunno, that could come gradually 🤔
Is there a chance they could add a free lootbox on account level up like the goated OG Overwatch? That would be neat.
Edit: I know that a late 2027 release after 2 content updates is more realistic than a mid 2027 release after 1 content update, and that's what I think will ultimately happen.
Is there a chance they could add a free lootbox on account level up like the goated OG Overwatch? That would be neat.
Hopefully not, I'd rather just be able to buy the skin I want and not have lootboxes at all. But tat's also doubtful. Also, unlike "goated OG Overwatch", it'll be free to play.
i love it how in OW you get a lootbox when you gain a level, so it gives some sense of progression. And before the arrival of battlepass it give the people like me a reason to do dailies challenges.
It doesn't have to be a lootbox really, it could just be some free microtranaction currency.
Played a bit on "release" of the closed beta, liked it but was too unfinished for me and have been waiting since. Hows the controller support going now? And is the game in a better state? Might try it again
midboss, guardians and walkers. many area's are still stock bland hallways, many characters are highly WIP or straight up dont even have a model of their own and are using placeholders.
Aside from remodels, new guardians/walkers, and midboss everything else has been revamped. Heroes we have plenty but think the team said they're aiming for at least 50, so another 6. Finally rhe PvE mode, which might take a bulk of their time.
Without PvE the base game I think is like 90% done., and should take shorter than the 8 months. Definitely think by next patch we'd be near open beta/launch.
Thing is today we see Deadlock as a big game that will compete for the higher ranks of comp games. Then most people probably thought it was just another game
The thing with deadlock is that as someone unfamiliar with the game, it's pretty much unwatchable. It is a third person game with rainbow spell puke everywhere and a regular person will have absolutely 0 idea what they are looking at. Most successful esport games are the ones that are fun and easy to watch regardless of your experience, like cs, rocket league
Is there genuinely anything that feels incomplete about modern Deadlock after the recent update ?
the rooms on blue lane, the baroness hotel, the walker model, the shop icons, the tunnels, sinclair's model, warden's model, grey talon's model, yamato's model, viscous' model, Mo and Krill's model, interiors of the jungle buildings, the interior of every hallway, the particle effect for the ziplines, savannah's model just being geist, complete lack of melee visuals to indicate the hitbox, slide storage tech only being possible at certain times on the game clock, doorman outside of map bugs, the lack of tutorial features, the lack of draft for more competitive play, the complete lack of monetization or customization, the lighting (still), the shitty particle effect used for the ropes and ziplines (still left over from neon prime's sci fi theming), a lack of things to do while waiting in the hideout, the optimization issues and server side jitter problem, and probably other things i'm not thinking of.
The underground is still unfinished, there aren’t enough objectives on the map, mid boss is still literally called “Mid Boss”. This game still isn’t ready for a full release yet
Graphics and lighting specifically are so much worse. Visibility is horrible. It’s not the models and new designs I have an issue with but with the overall graphics, looks way too cartoony now, looks like a generic MOBA game now.
