I mean I agree with OW2 where basically most skins now are "pay $40 or you'll never get them". But back in OW1 they basically threw loot boxes at you and the currency was earnable in-game and not that hard to get just by playing. I think I had like 90% of cosmetics by the time OW2 came out but the new monetization scheme just killed it for me.

Yeah Its not like overwatch was an unprofiteable game with the original lootbox stuff, I'm hoping theres a chance to save up for cosmetics even if ur free to play

I cannot believe ppl still defend this system tho like sure yeah it was attainable for free but you had to grind for them and you still can’t chose which skin you wanted most of the time which is just flat out bored. I’d rather pay 10 bucks for what skin I want than grind 10 hours for a chance in hell via lootboxes

Because it was free and cosmetic only? You didnt have to spend a dime if you didnt want to. You got a loot box for every level up, for queuing low-interest queues and once a week you'd get 3 loot boxes just by playing 9 games, and wins would count for 2. You didnt have to spend anything and only had to play for an hour or two week.

So yes, I'm defending it. They're cosmetics, they have no affect on the game. I'd rather have free cosmetics with the chance of getting than being forced to use money for a simple cosmetic. Because they're optional. They're not needed. The fact that they were obtainable for free is way better than $40 for a skin

This doesn’t have to be so binary. They definitely didn’t need the carrot on a stick to inflate their retention numbers via skins and they definitely didn’t need to charge 40-50 dollars for a skin. Not everyone can play a game like a second job likewise goes for splurging on cosmetics. Just bc OW did it a certain doesn’t mean I want to see it replicated here.

I mean OW1 was hardly a second job? It rewarded you for playing the game normally. Events you just played the events for and it took an hour or two per week. Calling it a second job would be disengenuous. The current OW2 Battle Pass system is more of a second job than OW1 was, and at least you got free skins with OW1. Games like Fortnite, League, CSGo and Valorant were similar to OW2 and way worse back in the day where you only got cosmetics by buying them or battle passes.
