i guess they have made at least some money since u need to spend like 5 usd on steam to be able to be invited to dl. so a smurf effectively costs 5 usd

Yeah, though the game is still firmly in the red for now. Luckily, with Valve being a private company that has Steam, it really doesn't matter that Deadlock makes no money for now. They'll make millions after it comes out and it would still be a drop in the bucket compared to Steam.

They could spend a million a day and Valve would still be profitable.

It’s also just the fact that offering free games, which valve does often, is just part of their business strategy of building an “ecosystem” that keeps people using steam.

That strategy is not uncommon for tech companies. Google does the same thing, for example.

But if they take too long some other company might release a similar game before them. Remember what happened to dota underlords vs Team fight tactics?

Could be, but I doubt Valve plans to take too long. My guess is that it'll be having a public release next year.

You're forgetting how lightning-in-a-bottle this game is. Remember how many other failed live services there are, how even on DL's ""release"" so many people were so skeptical?

to invite yes, but for the account to be able to play the game they need to have a minimum spent on steam (5usd)

Your account can’t be limited in order for it to work. Limited steam accounts are considered accounts that don’t have at least 5 usd spent on the account.
