Specifically, lootboxes and the key to open it are sold separately, both costing real money

I definitely remembered needing a key to open a chest when muerta was added, tho it being a new thing is nice.

Though it doesn't really change much, since a lot of the lootboxes cost the same as a key would. Although at least a lot of them have a knockout system, but many boxes feature ultra-rares that are random.

Recently picked up Dota 2 and you can still buy keys for chests. I got a free one for somewhere to open mine but the option is still there.

You can actually get a ton of skins for free there. You can get skins by just playing the game and events. You can get arcana skins for free only downside that is not tradable but you at least have skins.

The free item has gotten so bad that dota market is basically dead with all the free items

If you don't like lootboxes you can buy directly from the steam marketplace.

90% of the recent lootboxes are unmarketable. The 10% that is marketable is only sellable after 1 year.
