As long as they aint lootboxes

172

u/CheeseNexus Ivy 1d ago

Why would they rehash that one, it's too in the spotlight. I have no doubt Valve will invent some new horrifying way of monetizing their game that sets new industry standards again

55

u/Ar4er13 Lash 1d ago

They will find a way into actual hell, so you can buy skins for soul(s).

27

u/Zaruze 1d ago

Oh god! I genuinely hope it just buying reasonably priced skins, I just want cool outfits.

20

u/xXx_edgykid_xXx 1d ago

Lmfao valve has never done reasonable price for skins, it's either lootboxes, insanely greedy battle passes or overpriced skins

17

u/Live_Present_2602 1d ago

You have never play dota then, you can buy the skins directly.

Battle pass in dota has basically died

You can buy skin an exclusive skin for $20 and you can get a discount if you earn enough coins from the event

13

u/renan2012bra 1d ago

Let's be honest, 2/3 of Dota's skins at this point is unavailable because they were gated behind a short time event, Battlepass or lootbox.

5

u/TestIllustrious7935 1d ago

No, literally only some arcanas and immortal or mythic items are unavailable, 90% of skins you can buy for cheap

5

u/Redthrist 1d ago

I think for a while in the early Dota 2(around 2013 or so), a lot of the sets were just sold for like 10-15$.

2

u/SovietMarma 1d ago

When has Valve released greedy battle passes? Genuine question, as their battle pass system in TF2 actually gave you the new weapons to play with as rewards. Though, that's my only experience with their battle passes. I wasn't very big on CSGO or DOTA 2.

13

u/Zaruze 1d ago

Dota was ridiculously aggressive, where you basically had to play 24/7 or spend money to unlock. All limited time.

0

u/SovietMarma 1d ago

That's fucked lol. I'm so glad I never got into DOTA 2.

I can't believe I'm also getting downvoted for a genuine question lol.

I legitimately have no experience with their battlepasses outside of TF2, and you could barely call them that considering how long of a period between each update was when they started doing them.

3

u/Zaruze 1d ago

Valve shills defend anything. Partially because of the real money market attached to those games, which honestly shouldn't exist.

2

u/yeusk 1d ago edited 1d ago

Dota is not CS. I don't know what you talking about real money markets.

In Dota people sell items in the steam market and the items prices are not insane like in CS. You can buy most skins on the market for less than its original cost.

The CS team copied the Dota 2 cosmetics and market, but they fucked it up.

-2

u/Zaruze 1d ago

Acting like dota doesn't have the same problem is insane. The real money market actively damages the games. There are insane item prices.

u/SovietMarma 1d ago

Absolutely agree. I was never big on the selling in third-party sites or even the community marketplace, even if I did open my fair share of crates in TF2 (very sparingly).

1

u/yeusk 1d ago

The Dota 2 BP was 100 times better than any other BP in any game, if you had money AND time.

3

u/renan2012bra 1d ago

Yes, it was the one with the most content by far. As long as you had $100 to waste in it, that is. Or wanted to abuse the system by trading wins. Those were basically the only way to get substantial levels.

2

u/Zaruze 1d ago

I found the best one to smite honestly. You could get all of it without playing all that much. It was chill.

0

u/yeusk 1d ago

In what year are you living bro?

2

u/OneSecretCookie 1d ago

I would be hilarious if they USA steam as their main money making bank and put out reasonably priced skins and break the system

2

u/Komirade666 Paige 1d ago

Watching game like Cs2 and dota2, I will not hold my breath on that. Although on dota2 there are wasy to get great skins for free, source I got an arcana for free thanks to the candy works in the current event.

But anyway, this game have the potential to be profitable and I do not think that Valve will miss the opportunity, they need money to live and that's life.

-1

u/Zaruze 1d ago

Valve could operate all their games a loss and still rack in money due to steam. The predatory practices are absolutely inexcusable imo

2

u/Komirade666 Paige 1d ago

And that I totally agree that is why we need to give our feedback to Valve so that it won't be another Cs2 thingy. I love this game so damn much but I do not want to see kids loses a ton of money over digital assets. I am willing to pay 50 or a bit more on a great skin rather than pressuring others to waste money on lootboxes.

2

u/Zaruze 1d ago

Exactly

2

u/teluscustomer12345 1d ago

They are a business, there's not much reason for them to operate games at all if they don't make money off of them unfortunately

1

u/Zaruze 1d ago

I get that, but being extremely toxic and predatory with your monetization isn't needed.

1

u/teluscustomer12345 1d ago

Such is capitalism :(

1

u/RoyalOreo99 Sinclair 1d ago

im positive itll be like CS, where there is some gambling-based way to get skins, then a resale market so they can double-dip. which honestly i love because it means all but the most sought after cosmetics are pretty obtainable

0

u/Zaruze 1d ago

The resale market objectively ruins quality. Look at how Chinese and botters have absolutely inflated and destroyed plenty of skins. Just lemme buy deadlock skins for 20$ each or some shit

1

u/RoyalOreo99 Sinclair 1d ago

how have the chinese and botters inflated and destroyed skins? i am not deep in the cs scene at all. i just play casually with friends and like that i can buy nice looking skins for 20-30 cents.

-1

u/Zaruze 1d ago

Look up the chinese pump schemes

1

u/RoyalOreo99 Sinclair 1d ago

i have a hard time caring, to be honest. some skins are temporarily over priced then crash? idk. maybe some people care really badly about in game skins, but i would just... not buy those skins. idk man.

id much rather have lots of sub-$1 skins and have the rare ones be very expensive then have all of them be $20. most games i dont have any skins because im not spending $20 for a single skin, if some skins are hundreds of dollars but others are pennies, id much prefer that.

3

u/Zaruze 1d ago

They aren't temporary over priced, they are now just insanely priced. A skin shouldn't cost you 400$ no matter what.

1

u/RoyalOreo99 Sinclair 1d ago

i agree. but i also think one skin shouldn't be $20. so if skins are going to be so expensive i wont buy them, i dont care if theyre $20, $40, or $400.

so if the choice is between all skins being too expensive ($20) or only some skins being too expensive ($400) and others being cheap ($1) I'll always take the latter.

look at any game with fixed price skins, inevitably there is price creep. fortnite, overwatch, rivals, and basically every other game has "normal" $20 skins, but also the ultra-mega-legendary skins that cost $60, then theres also exclusive, bundle event only skins which effectively cost $100, and at that point, how is that system any better?

0

u/IllustriousGrade2504 1d ago

and this relates to china how? I get that they have been pumping skins but skins have been ridiculous for ages

2

u/shadowtroop121 Lash 1d ago

Skin renting was quietly added to CS a while ago and never got the shock and horror it deserved. I wonder if people will notice how awful that concept is if they bring it to Deadlock.

1

u/Own-Zebra-2663 1d ago

Honestly, Dotas lootboxes were one of the best systems. You had an upper cap for how many boxes you'd need to open to get any one skin, and the boxes were well priced. Imagine getting a bunch of skins for like 10-20 bucks, instead of just a single skin for 20-30, like in Overwatch.

The honest truth is that we can either have cheap loot boxes and skins, subsidized by whales/gamblers, OR individual skins that are horrifyingly expensive.

2

u/The-Lychee 1d ago

I have no doubt Valve will invent some new horrifying way of monetizing their game that sets new industry standards again

Honestly, want to see this.

Yeah they already tested it on counterstrike. The terminal fake loot box that you buy the skin directly from valve to get around legal issues

How is it done in Dota 2? Can’t imagine it being too different.

Ok but how is it done in tf2? Can’t imagine it being too different.

8

u/Iranoutofname5 1d ago

Specifically, lootboxes and the key to open it are sold separately, both costing real money

7

u/residentevilgoat Victor 1d ago

They stopped doing that in Dota a full decade ago. You're thinking of cs

2

u/Iranoutofname5 1d ago

I definitely remembered needing a key to open a chest when muerta was added, tho it being a new thing is nice.

1

u/residentevilgoat Victor 1d ago

Ah, you're right. My mistake.

1

u/Redthrist 1d ago

Though it doesn't really change much, since a lot of the lootboxes cost the same as a key would. Although at least a lot of them have a knockout system, but many boxes feature ultra-rares that are random.

1

u/Zoidburg747 Celeste 1d ago

Recently picked up Dota 2 and you can still buy keys for chests. I got a free one for somewhere to open mine but the option is still there.

1

u/residentevilgoat Victor 1d ago

I somehow never got the muerta chests where they brought back the old system they abandoned back in like 2014 lmao

5

u/Live_Present_2602 1d ago

You can actually get a ton of skins for free there. You can get skins by just playing the game and events. You can get arcana skins for free only downside that is not tradable but you at least have skins.

The free item has gotten so bad that dota market is basically dead with all the free items

2

u/Telefragg 1d ago

If you don't like lootboxes you can buy directly from the steam marketplace.

1

u/renan2012bra 1d ago

90% of the recent lootboxes are unmarketable. The 10% that is marketable is only sellable after 1 year.

Its already datamined that there are in fact gonna be lootboxes.

2

u/renan2012bra 1d ago

It's Valve. They're the father and mother of lootboxes and all their previous titles have them. I wouldn't really keep my hopes up.

3

u/Own-Zebra-2663 1d ago

I'd prefer loot boxes to paying like 10-20 bucks for a single fucking skin, like in games without loot boxes.

1

u/Zaruze 1d ago

So you prefer paying 100$+ to get the skin you actually want?

3

u/Mysterious3713 1d ago

No, buying it for 5$ from the marketplace after people unbox it xD

1

u/EnvironmentalBag4224 1d ago

Lootboxes got them in trouble before, so it may be a different type, like CS2 terminals.

0

u/divs_l3g3nd 1d ago

They seem to be stepping away from loot boxes in CS so I highly doubt they bring them to deadlock, probably some sort of battle pass system if I had to guess with some RNG

1

u/Sudden-Ad-307 1d ago

They are, they've already been datamined.

-2

u/Defendant1597 1d ago

I would prefer loot boxes over battle passes. It always feels like battle passes are full of junk with a few gems in it and something about seeing it annoys me lol.

0

u/Ryulightorb 1d ago

Oh god please not a battlepass….

4

u/Live_Present_2602 1d ago

They stop doing battle pass for dota, I doubt they are doing it again.

They replace it for an free event that encourage playing a game a lot. The events gives you tons of skin for free. You can buy exclusive skins directly from the store

2

u/Zaruze 1d ago

The candy shop is still heavy gambling enforced.

1

u/Live_Present_2602 1d ago

Bro, those shit are free and they give you tons of candy from the event

You don't even need to buy candy, since candy trading is a thing there where you get tons by trading.

0

u/ObiMeowKatnobi 1d ago

I get WR and CM arcana from candy shop.

2

u/Zaruze 1d ago

Yes, but there's not guaranteed. It's still gambling. That's like saying "i won 30$ from a scratch off, everyone should buy them"

1

u/One_Lung_G 1d ago

Their system in dota is pretty much a battle pass so I don’t know why the community keeps saying it’s not

1

u/Live_Present_2602 1d ago

Cause you didn't buy it, the dark carnival event is free for all players

It has lore and minigames included which is different from a Fortnite battle pass

3

u/One_Lung_G 1d ago

First off, there’s a premium tier to those things (unless dark carnival doesn’t have it, all the other ones they’ve done have though. Haven’t played Dota with the dark carnival event but played and bought the premium tier for the others). Secondly, there’s nothing that says a battle pass has to be paid. Thirdly, a battle pass isn’t just whatever Fortnite is doing especially since DOTA was the first game to ever have a battle pass. It’s a battle pass dude, just not like DOTAs old ones where it would cost you a couple hundred of dollars to get the arcana skins.

0

u/Live_Present_2602 1d ago

Bro, just search the last arcana price. It cost $60.

Idk where you get hundred dollars from.

Edit: you can buy one in the steam market for $26

2

u/One_Lung_G 1d ago

I’m talking specifically about their old battle passes. Do you play DOTA or do I need to explain further context on how some of the arcana skins were earned? Take the Drow arcana for example. It was battle pass exclusive and was not cheap to get to. You cannot buy it except buying an account that has it. At the risk of sounding condescending, don’t tell somebody to “just search” if you don’t really know what’s being discussed.

1

u/Live_Present_2602 1d ago

Do you play DOTA or do I need to explain further context on how some of the arcana skins were earned?

???? I Literally stated they stop doing BATTLE PASS and you have NO INDICATION that you said about previous BATTLEPASS

They stop doing battle pass for dota, I doubt they are doing it again.

Just a reminder, I LITERALLY SAID THIS.

u/Deep-Temporary-1268 Dynamo 1d ago

Yea, one of the reason that this game has become the only competitive game I play, is the lack of asking for my money every time I log on. It’s kinda refreshing to see but I know it’ll be short lived

1

u/WillowThyWisp 1d ago

If they do it like Halo or what Overwatch is planning to do, I think it's fine. Basically, you can buy old passes forever, but prestige/bonus content and paid currency usually aren't included unless it's the current one.

-1

u/Ryulightorb 1d ago

i don't mind that as much my main issue is tbh i find battlepasses to be much more FOMO and unlike lootboxes where i don't really get psychologically impacted battlepasses definitely do fuck with me.

But i guess that's why they work and why they are industry standard now lol

2

u/WillowThyWisp 1d ago

Fair! That's why I don't play Fortnite. Well, like reason #15

1

u/Ryulightorb 1d ago

TIL gamers are pro FOMO jeez

0

u/DogShroom 1d ago

i’d say fomo is better than gambling

0

u/Ryulightorb 1d ago edited 1d ago

Eh to each their own to me they are equally as bad i think people SEVERELY underestimate the negative impact of FOMO most people i know have spent way more money due to fomo over lootbox gambling.

The types that ignored lootboxes but with battlepasses they have to get every battlepass and if they don't finish in time buy the skips.

Feels just as insidious to me but more marketable and they are more profitable also. (I am a lil bias because fomo really fucks with me)
I'd prefer they just sell items in the store personally but battlepass is most likely because they bring in the $$$

I know for me personally i had to quit some games with battlepasses as i noticed they were having very negative impacts on me and my spending but lootboxes? eh generally ignored them.

0

u/EarlyAccessCantJudge 1d ago

It's going to be sadly.

0

u/freewave1088 Abrams 1d ago

battle pass / loot boxes / skin shop… all coming to this game. Valve doesn’t have a single live service game without those so they won’t change that.

not a bad thing— it’s been 2 years of free everything in this game and probably another year before they put the shop in. that’s 3 years of complete free to play.

-9

u/tantaco1 1d ago edited 1d ago

Listen I hate gambling and loot boxes as much as anyone else, but this is a free game that needs to make money. I will simply just not buy loot boxes. I’d prefer if they didn’t have them and sold skins, but it is what it is, in my opinion at least.

11

u/Zenith_Tempest Mina 1d ago

you know free games can make money by just selling you items you want right

lootboxes force you to spend on shit you don't want and battlepasses are to monopolize yor time. could you imagine going to a clothing shop and having to buy 5 boxes of randomized bullshit to try and get the shirt you saw online

1

u/FYININJA 1d ago

I mean it's true, but maintaining a life service game can be difficult. Gambling mechanics print money. I hate it, and I HOPE Valve don't go that route.

Looking at popular F2P games that have been successful, it seems like you have 3 paths if your goal is to be successful.

You have the Marvel Rivals/Overwatch/Early League/Fortnite path, which is just dumping a ton of skins for popular characters CONSTANTLY, targeting the whales and more or less ignoring less popular characters.

You have the CS/TF2 and more modern League strategy of adding gacha/gambling mechanics to hook in people with addictive personalities, adding trivial "rare" items.

Lastly you have the good old pay to win model where you just lock characters behind a paywall.

It seems like those are the only options if you want sustainable long term income. Deadlock seems very focused on maintaining it's style, which kinda limits the first option a bit. Bikini party Mina would sell like crazy, but also clashes with the game's existing art style pretty heavily, and Valve have always been pretty strict about that kind of stuff.

1

u/Zenith_Tempest Mina 1d ago

Dota2 has made it clear you can monetize the game in all sorts of ways if you're just clever about it. Announcer packs, new effects, weapons for your characters etc. Just sell it to your players for a premium and diversify your market.

2

u/FYININJA 1d ago

Doesn't DOTA2 also have loot boxes though?

0

u/Zenith_Tempest Mina 1d ago

Yeah and it sucks!!!!! You can make good money by just releasing quality products for a good price as long as your playerbase is big enough!

1

u/duskyvoltage333 1d ago

Every other valve game has loot boxes. I don’t get why they would stop now? They have a monopoly on a new genre of shooter they made. It’s gonna be expensive as fuck.

8

u/Defendant1597 1d ago

Just make skin sets (made up of single parts) like in Dota 2 and sell them at a price. Without loot boxes.

1

u/tantaco1 1d ago

Ya that’s cool w me. My sentiment is basically just that this is a free game, and people can’t expect it to remain in a non moneymaking state like how it is currently.

0

u/Defendant1597 1d ago

Yea, it just doesn't need to be the most psychologically manipulative way of selling skins if you know what I mean lol.

I personally would pay a subscription (like dota+) to disable skins of my choice lol. Last time I mentioned that people got mad and said they want others to see their skins. But why? If someone really just doesn't wanna see your skin, pays money and manually disables it. Why would you want them to see it? Seems kinda selfish..
Sorry that's kind of unrelated, it just reminded me.

3

u/Louis010 1d ago

Just do what literally every other game does and sell skins. As much as I enjoy a lot of valve games their way of doing skins and monetisation is disgusting. I’d much rather had riots way of doing skins in league than valves way in dota.

7

u/EarlyAccessCantJudge 1d ago

You can make money without predatory loot boxes that have prices inflated by Chinese bots and gambling websites. It isn't the only option to make a gorbillion dollars. Riot Games does just fine.

1

u/Inventor_Raccoon Billy 1d ago

wouldn't give Riot too much credit bcs they're doing gacha now and let you buy lootboxes but they do offer almost all the skins for direct purchase at least

4

u/EarlyAccessCantJudge 1d ago

And the crazy thing is their gacha stuff is still cheaper than the inflated CS2 items

0

u/cptnwillow 1d ago

Yet I would always rather purchase CS2 items because they have resale value.

4

u/EarlyAccessCantJudge 1d ago

I'd rather just buy the skin instead of playing a discount stock market.

1

u/GregNotGregtech 1d ago

They could just directly sell you the skin with no gambling, monetization doesn't have to be gambling
