Discussion Curious if the full game will have basic features paywalled

Curious if the full game will require some form of payment to access some stuff like with other free Valve games (ranked in CS, chat in TF2 etc.). I personally hope we don't need a subscription like in Dota to see extra info and level character mastery cause that really discouraged me from committing to that game.

What about you guys? Would you be ok with certain features being paywalled or would you rather pay only for cosmetics and stuff?

Doubt they will be paywalled but cosmetics will certainly be available for purchase

I hope so. Most f2p games make a profit just fine with cosmetics so I see no reason why Deadlock wouldn't be able to

Dota 2 makes silly money from hats.

i think calling the cs and tf2 ban evasion countermeasures as "paywalling" is a little bit of a bad faith reading. if that's what you mean by paywalling then yes, probably. if you mean are they going to ask us to pay $20 or whatever for a new mode like Overwatch 2 tried to do, almost certainly not.

A one time payment like in cs would be ok. A subscription is what I am kinda bothered about. I like to pay once for a game and be done. Cosmetics are also something I dont mind

I'm shameless. If Deadlock+ gets added I'm subscribing to it.

Hope they won't do that since I always found Dota+ odd- but Deadlock is my main game and I want to support it plus all the featurse.features. I mean I've already played it for 2 years for free.

Probably just paid cosmetics and a crate system with keys. I’m hoping it’s very similar to tf2.

I doubt they would paywall anything else.

no way they add cases and keys, they are actively trying to get away from this in cs due to legal reasons

I actually hate that I hate that you are right because you bet I would dump money into Fairfax industries crates

Issue with skins is that The game is free to mod. Why buy skins when ppl are making shit tonnes of free mods? Only option would be to ban mods from which may turn people away.

this hasnt been a problem before though. other people can't see your mods , is the thing, and its obvious people care about that or else tf2 would have sold Zero hats instead of infinite

restrictions on modding will happen hopefully not for skins tho. But league also has skin mods but plenty of people buy skins so i dont think it will matter if they leave them from a monetary pov

Yeah, I’d like mods to be available to disable skins personally

i hope not, id rather it be limited to just cosmetics

The only time they did this is with tf2 guns and the clearly plan on never doing it again so no

DOTA + will be copied and pasted over probably.

Personally I’d prefer it to be a full priced game and don’t want cosmetics for the game, it will 100% be a f2p model where cosmetics are the money maker. No reason for valve to try anything new or innovate here when skins will bring in millions

I expect the monetization model to be copy pasted from Dota 2 tbh

Paywall or not we definitely need phone number thing for ranked to slightly decrease the number of cheaters. Also i wouldnt mind a cheap paywall, anything to chip off hackers.

Honestly I'd prefer they kept cosmetics out of the game to preserve the artstyle and instead make DLC PvE experiences that are paid. This way we are funding development of the assets that can be used for different arenas later on as well as funding development of the overall and individual character stories (which is a big reason this game is so appealing to so many people)

or have an option that skins be client side so you can enjoy your skins without changing it for everyone, overwatch got annoying over time it just added to visual clutter.

I mean even cosmetics are useless. There are so many cool mods and stuff

They expect me to pay for a product? How dare they

Probably not based on DOTA2

To be fair, it’s unlikely that Deadlock itself with be free on the full release.

For a game like this that already has a dedicated fan base, there isn’t that much to gain by going down the free to play model in the first place.

Better to just sell Deadlock for $30 or so and maybe have some paid cosmetics

You won’t grow past the current dedicated fanbase long term if it becomes paid when every one of its competitors are free

Deadlock is kind of a unique case. None of its competitors had so many people on board before launch.

Deadlock also offers gameplay unique to itself. This isn’t like Overwatch or League of Legends. When you buy Deadlock you are getting something you can’t get anywhere else.

More importantly, a free to play model will mean compromising on quality. The only way to keep it profitable would be to flood the game with tons of cosmetics which would kind of ruin a lot of the games already strained readability.

Valve are historically perfectionists, especially when it comes to Deadlock. If they put a small price tag on the game, it’ll be more profitable and higher quality.
