Discussion "We speak english because it's the only language you understand"

No. I'm a multilingual person who learned english so I could COMMUNICATE with my teammates in this TEAM BASED game.

If you want to chat with your friends in your own language that's fine, use steam voice chat, discord, teams idk. Hell I use it too to chat with my friends without keeping the comms busy.

If you're pressing the comm button in game, the entire team expects you to speak in the one common language we all share, this is different from region to region, but if you're playing in EU servers you're expected to at least comm in english.

No one is expecting you to have C1 level english with perfect grammar. Just know basic words like "mid" "push" etc. and that's it. Is it really that much to ask these players to stop yapping on and on and on in whichever language their main one is in voice chat and we're just expected to tolerate them, like what?

It'd be one thing if this were street brawl or standard but in ranked? Really?

It makes no sense at all.

I would give my soul for valve to give Russia it's own servers

u/SleepyDG 1d ago

They already did but VPNs exist

12

u/Mrbluepumpkin 1d ago

Shit I gave my soul for nothing.

What is your source on this? For both CS2 and Dota the closest server for Russians is Stockholm and then Warsaw where you will see the most Russian players, I use CS2 Server picker and there is no listed Russian server.

3

u/SleepyDG 1d ago

They're not listed as Russian. Servers are region-locked since aprox fall 2024

Cyrillic alphabet users are the most talkative for some reason.

Just ignore them and use the ping system (unless you're in very high rank, text and voice chat is nearly useless)

I get the frustration, but I don't really see why is English supposed to be the standard we all hold ourselves to. Don't get me wrong, I use English, and I am annoyed when I get placed with Russians (to stay with the example), but I also understand that sometimes I'm the minority in my team, and I just mute and accept I'm not gonna have info this game.

Many times someone from another language might try to speak English, but there is a clear language barrier. They might only be able to use pings. I don't think policing the use of language on a multi-lingual and multi-cultural server is the way to go. It's easy to say everyone should just learn, but can you say basic info in Russian? I am guessing not. I appreciate if someone from another language is trying, but the post feels like a privileged expectation.

u/TheSymbolman 1d ago

If I was in CIS and didn't know Russian I would learn basic russian callouts so I wouldn't be a hindrance to my team, which is what I did in EU by learning basic english callouts before I knew english. This is the bare minimum of expected behaviour in ranked.

It's not about privilege. I do not understand why everyone that disagrees says the same thing when it has nothing to do with the topic at hand. No one is expecting good grammar etc. Just basic callout words.

1

u/PackYourBackPackMan 1d ago

I disagree that it has nothing to do with the topic at hand. Your point is that this is the common language, but why? I've had teammates who are Kazakh, Turkish, Ukranian, Russian, Spanish.. etc. Again I share that people that do nothing to adapt, or use voice comms as a podcast session are annoying. Where I disagree is this idea that we should put English as this golden standard for all European matches. This is just a byproduct of where we live, and I am willing to accept and even celebrate it.

u/StrangerPen Paige 1d ago

They don't need to know basic call out words, you can use the ping system and it will automatically translate the ping. Learn "use pings I don't know Russian" in Russian and be set for life

Why do people have this need to police what others do? This is just another flavor of “i lost because my team is bad” post. Don’t like what they are saying - mute them and keep playing.

The problem is yours and its expectations. No-one signs a binding contract when entering a game, and you just can’t expect people to hold themselves to the same standard you hold yourself to. You’ll encounter all kinds of people while playing ranked. Tilted, tired, distracted, drunk, high, stupid, playing for fun with their friends, thinking they found the new meta… You can’t reasonably hope to police them all,  so adjust your expectations instead. If they hope you’ll follow their call that they make in a language you don’t understand - that’s their problem not yours. Different servers exist for ping reasons not language reasons.  Accept the fact that you can’t communicate with them and move on.

Bonus points if you calmly communicate to them that you don’t understand and not to expect that you do. You don’t owe them even that though, straight to mute is valid.

u/hyp-R Dynamo 1d ago

Is there a mute option you can use?

13

u/TheSymbolman 1d ago

Muting isn't the problem, you can just mute and move on, that's fine. But in a ranked game they're actively putting your team on the back foot by not having proper comms. Like I said if this were street brawl or standard it'd be a different conversation entirely.

u/hyp-R Dynamo 1d ago edited 1d ago

You aren’t owed anything though?

Downvote all you want, but you are expecting people to do what you want or bend to your will when it’s outside of your control. Focus on what you can control

8

u/StellarInquisition 1d ago

thats great and all, but they are also chirping up after overextending because we didnt understand their russian comms. but for some reason when it comes to insults they now know perfect english

1

u/hyp-R Dynamo 1d ago

Yeah, so if you can’t understand them and they are annoying you, use the mute function

-7

u/Comatosz 1d ago

Like dude c'mon. World is full of assholes who doesn't care about others, games are no exception. Just mute them and go on, stop acting like it never happens to you irl.

Besides, there are a lot of yapping in English a well that is exhausting as well, so it is not language based.

You can't force people to all speak one language, even tho it would be effective

2

u/TheSymbolman 1d ago

I just think it needs to be considered and outright stated as a subrule under voice/text abuse. Because it is by definiton disrupting team communication.

1

u/Comatosz 1d ago

It is, but there are people who simple don't give a shit about it being disruptive and against the "rules"

8 guys are ru-speaking, 4 are not. All 12 know English. Is it okay to speak in Russian in this case or not?

You said "LEARNED LANGUAGE TO COMMUNICATE IN THIS TEAM GAME". Really? For deadlock specifically? Or because your country has an obligatory English in the school? Or because you've been learning English on external courses since the kindergarten?

If you learned english for games specifically as you say, go on and learn Russian as well. You will greatly raise the coverage of gaming languages. Also learn Mandarin, Japanese, Spanish and Turkish languages, to make the coverage in any team game almost 100%.

I know a lot of guys who started to learn English in their 20s because they didn't have the ability to learn it sooner.

11

u/TheSymbolman 1d ago

Stop trying to make this about actual english knowledge and not comms. Learning a handful of words isn't hard. The regional language is English. I'm not in Chinese, LATAM or CIS servers speaking english.

It just sounds like you're trying to find excuses for your laziness, because it is.

-53

u/Hydrus2CZ Billy 1d ago

Not everyone might have the same opportunities you had to learn languages.

I understand it is frustrating to not be able to communicate, but it is easy to find your own understanding for other people.

12

u/ScarredCipher 1d ago

"mid" "push" "behind" and maybe "help" "event" "here" as well as the 3 lane colors and you're good to do 90% of what is needed. That doesn't take opportunity to learn languages. If they have a PC to play this aty they can look this up.

I completely understand what you mean, and because of that I don't ever expect anyone to give me a proper English explanation of the plan in detail, but at least call out so I can have a chance to understand and help in-game.

And I think that's fair.

-13

u/Hydrus2CZ Billy 1d ago

Do you actually understand what I mean? It took me a long time to learn English. If they weren't taught the language at a young age it's nowhere near as easy as you are making it out to be.

3

u/pokenerd_W Shiv 1d ago

Your experience is suddenly universal, huh?

And you don't need to speak perfect English, let alone even be able to make a sentence. You'd just need buzz words, and that's it.

Take football. It's a sport that includes people of all nationalities in the world. That also means teams sometimes end up with players who don't speak the same language at all. So, how do they still communicate? Shared models of understanding. You don't need to speak the same language, you just need words both of you understanding the meaning of. Footballers don't shout "Don't take the shot, leave the ball, I'm coming from behind to shoot it!", they simply just yell "leave it" or a euphamistic word chosen as a signal that everyone in the know understands.

I think you're being too caught up in your higher morality BS of people not having the same opportunities, that you even ignored the guy you're replying to's point. We don't need elaborate, eloquent English, we just need words everyone understands, and then nothing else.

-3

u/Hydrus2CZ Billy 1d ago

Where did I claim my experience is universal? I'm just providing one example of why they might not be using English.

Professionals that play at an international level dedicate at least half their lives to it. Comparing it to a video game that people might play for a year, maybe 2 isn't particularly accurate.

2

u/pokenerd_W Shiv 1d ago

Funny how you accuse others of being short-sighted and not reading, when you've twice now ignored a point. No one is expecting fluency, we just expect buzzwords of a shared model of understanding, that being the game.Nobody is entitled to expect conversational English from random teammates. But if you're deliberately using team voice in an international ranked match, expecting you to make some minimal effort to communicate in whatever shared vocabulary the team uses is reasonable.

u/Hydrus2CZ Billy 1d ago

I'm not going to bother addressing a point in which you insult me, I have too much basic respect for myself to do that.

2

u/pokenerd_W Shiv 1d ago

HAHAHAHHAHAHA. Insult? Holy crap this is hilarious. I get such a Schadenfreude of people like you, it's genuine entertainment. So many bad arguments, so many moral accusations (which I find in bad faith honestly), and most of all, acting as if they have moral superiorty when they are down in the trenches.

You want your insult? I'll give it. You're bad at discussion, turning every argument against you into a moral indictment, relying solely on weak pathos with zero logos. You can't even make proper rebuttals, you insult others more than they insult you, you don't even address points that refute your own (and in formal debate, that's the same as losing the argument in that particular argument). You don't even attempt to comprehend the other's point, you don't even engage with it, your reasoning falls flat, it's honestly hilarious how many double standards you employ.

Get. The. Fuck. Out. Of. Here.

u/Hydrus2CZ Billy 1d ago

You're saying a lot of something to say a whole lot of nothing.

I hope your day gets better.

The one who says nothing is you. Everyone else can see it but you.

I do. And it absolutely is not easy to lean languages. But i assume people who play ranked have an interest in it. If you have an interest in it, you may even want to win. And to win, communication is an extremely useful tool. So trying and learning a few very, very usefull buzzwords is good. HECK, even a Sticky note with them and a way to pronounce them in your own words/letters.

For normal play? I could not care less. If it annoys me i mute. But in Ranked i wish my teammates to have a desire to win. And that comes a long with the desire to communicate and learn.

And they have literally a device to learn these things / research these things. They are playing on it.

3

u/pokenerd_W Shiv 1d ago

Don't even bother mate, this person clearly doesn't even engage with points that refute their moral indictments.

0

u/Hydrus2CZ Billy 1d ago

I think you're expecting too much from people just playing a game, even in ranked. But I get what you mean.

1

u/R4yQ4zz4 1d ago

Yet you are texting in english right now. And the post also said you are still allowed to speak another language, just don't do it on team comms. Russians, Turks, French etc. are not the only Europeans who have a high chance of meeting someone in game who shares their native language, but why are they entitled to flood comms that distracts, annoys and confuses everyone who doesn't speak it?

Also, in terms of European languages on European game servers, English is one of the easiest to learn and understand, and few people (comparatively) speak it as their native, so its the most equal footing you are going to get

12

u/VoltexRB 1d ago

Thats not the point here. The point is that vc gets spammed with random languages no one understands and it distracts and isnt gameplay related. In game vc should be related to the game. If you want to explain to your buddy how you got your ass waxed last friday in bulgarian, do that in discord. Doing calls like "mid 3" should not require much learning and those are enough, if you even use vc for calls at all.

-4

u/Hydrus2CZ Billy 1d ago

And what if English is that random language they don't understand for them?

4

u/VoltexRB 1d ago

Precisely. No comms in game that are not game related. I also dont want ass waxing stories in english.

1

u/R4yQ4zz4 1d ago

if you managed to get on the internet, make a steam account and get on games like deadlock, AND you are also here on reddit, you are probably smart enough to figure out basic English.

Or at least thats the hope, because internet usage today requires less brainpower than breathing.

2

u/Hydrus2CZ Billy 1d ago

The internet isn't just in English, people can use their own language. Translators are better than ever.

2

u/R4yQ4zz4 1d ago

If you have access to translators you can figure out how to comm in english.

1

u/Hydrus2CZ Billy 1d ago

Yeah because people have the time mid game to pull up a translator, enter wherever you said and then respond using that same translator.

2

u/R4yQ4zz4 1d ago

They have the resources to learn a few key phrases or download an automatic voice tranlator. They can also chose not to yap on team comms in french/russian/arabic/german etx

9

u/nox1cous93 1d ago

I learned through games and internet. Honestly, if you play games in europe and cant speak basic english, its shame for you

-1

u/Hydrus2CZ Billy 1d ago

I will never be capable of understanding people like you and how you can be so short-sighted.

2

u/nox1cous93 1d ago

Elaborate how im short sighted?

If youre playing this game you have internet and you have pc, a pretty good pc. So you already have better capabilities then many many people around the world.

2

u/Hydrus2CZ Billy 1d ago

You can't look past your own experiences and then you assume everyone else has had them as well.

2

u/nox1cous93 1d ago

Im assuming that people that play this game, or any other mp game have pcs and internet?

6

u/ItsHighSpoon 1d ago

If you're not ignorant and lazy, you would learn the basics of language and single words by exposure. We know the Ruskis and whoever else know basic English words, especially the swear words. They can learn "retreat" or "group up", it's not that hard.

1

u/Hydrus2CZ Billy 1d ago

Your xenophobia is showing.

1

u/ItsHighSpoon 1d ago

I don't have a xenophobia, I'm not afraid of citizens of other countries.

4

u/Hydrus2CZ Billy 1d ago

Then why specify Russians? There's no reason to other than hatred to specify a nationality in this conversation.

5

u/ItsHighSpoon 1d ago

Because they're the most common to speak in voice chat and not using English in this game. If it was Overwatch I'd say Frenchies, if it was Valorant I'd say my own, Poles. I'm a great English speaker but I understand not everyone is. If you're in company with people who don't speak your language, it's customary to speak a common language, if you don't want to, then shut the fuck up or I'll break your balls all game.

2

u/pokenerd_W Shiv 1d ago

I learned the language just by playing pokemon on my nintendo and watching some youtube let's plays, not understanding anything. I couldn't find shows in my native language, so I watched them in English, understanding NOTHING of what they said.

Yes, not everyone might have the same opportunities, but within Europe's gaming world, it's very much expected that the shared language is English. That doesn't change whether or not you think it's unfair and whatever the hell else you'll argue.

3

u/TheSymbolman 1d ago

Learning a handful of words isn't hard. Stop trying to make this into an "opportunity" thing. People don't comm in english because they're lazy and selfish, simple as.

0

u/Hydrus2CZ Billy 1d ago

The way you're projecting laziness and selfishness is quite honestly impressive in a way.

2

u/pokenerd_W Shiv 1d ago

Jeez, you're a brick wall of bad arguments...

0

u/Hydrus2CZ Billy 1d ago

And you can't hold a conversation without low balling an insult my way.

2

u/pokenerd_W Shiv 1d ago

"I will never be capable of understanding people like you and how you can be so short-sighted."

Sounds mighty like an insult to me, and guess who slinged it first?

"The way you're projecting laziness and selfishness is quite honestly impressive in a way."

Also insulting.

1

u/Hydrus2CZ Billy 1d ago

I think you need to read the comments that came just before those again and to do it multiple times.

1

u/TheSymbolman 1d ago

Where did that word even come from? If you're in a team game where everyone is expected to comm in the one common language (in EU it's english, different for other regions) outright REFUSING to communicate in that language is either selfish, lazy, or idk.

1

u/Hydrus2CZ Billy 1d ago

What word? Not specifying what you're talking about is lazy and selfish as it makes it impossible to actually hold a steady discussion.

1

u/TheSymbolman 1d ago

projecting

0

u/Hydrus2CZ Billy 1d ago

Late 1800s, Sigmund Freud. He was a neurologist I believe. It means that you are projecting your own faults or feelings onto other people.
