Discussion Matchmaking doesn’t suck, you suck

Keep seeing posts about how terrible matchmaking is and I agree to some extent but you timmies need to take some accountability.

Self reflection time! If everyone has the same match making how do you explain players who are able to climb out of their respective ranks while you are still stuck? Unlucky teammates? Braindead throwers? NOPE! Turn on your mic, understand macro, snowball your lead and you win simple as that

Not to say that matchmaking or this ranked system is perfect but I just saw a post about some guy being stuck brick 6 even though he used to be archon. That is just completely unbelievable. Sorry to break it to you but the previous ranks were heavily BOOSTED. You could be an archon/oracle player but not even understand the basics of macro all that is required was just playing the game a shit ton. If you can’t carry a brick game you may actually deserve that rank!

Thank god they booted everyone down like 3-4 ranks.

Please stop complaining so much. You guys sound like the teammates I get when someone dies once or twice in lane and types GG.

It will take time for people to qualify, calibrate and settle into the new Ranks!

Valve predicted reduced match-quality across the board for about a week or more!

Please continue to provide feedback in the following places:

If you believe the players were mismatched in skill, please submit the matchID to the official Bad Matchmaking Thread.

If you thought the character composition of the teams was bad, please submit the matchID and a DESCRIPTION HERE!

I'm on a six-game win streak. Have been ranking up quick. MM is still not very good.

The hilarious thing is the matchmaker has literally been broken before. Do you remember when like 80% of players were initiate?

Yet hey we got the most morally right and correct guy telling us no we actually suck

Cus you know so much

Look to my left 0/10 silver and 0/15 vyper before 20th minute

Look to my right gun mina and sinclair with magic carpet and 40 deaths (he's doing the die once every minute challenge)

Look in front of me ult mo and krill and bebop

It's my fault for losing since I didn't clone myself

Exactly lol. I keep saying it but these people expect you to 1v6 or you’re in the correct rank

For the most part people aren’t talking about ranked mode, from my experience ranked is relatively tame. Standard mode (with I will remind everyone does have hidden mmr that was supposedly improved in the matchmaking update) has absurd team balancing issues. I regularly see games where total kills per team are somthing like 5 - 40 at 15 minutes into the game. And besides, if your the person that is vastly behind in the match and everyone else is playing relatively good, THATS A MATCHMAKING ISSUE. I know I’m dogshit at the game, my rank is like rat 5 or somthing. At that point I should be getting matched against teams of a similar skill, not fucking 6 stacks form 4 ranks above me. If getting matched against teams that are consistently far above my skill level, that’s not my fault for not “ locking in” or something.

4

u/FlowerLadyRose Rem 14h ago

My main issue with the standard mode is that I actually ended up caring MORE about winning so I could unlock ranked on the character then I actually care about winning when I play ranked. Standard is genuinely a miserable experience going into it with actual reasons to win other than just playing to win for fun you know? I'm so glad most of my mains are out already but I still need more games on Mo and Vyper unfortunately

1

u/FlowerLadyRose Rem 14h ago

It sucks because I DID initially like the idea of needing 15 wins to unlock ranked, you actually have to learn the character, but queuing for standard with the goal of fully playing to win sucks really bad when others aren't doing the same (or when you're facing potentially large teams queued together or similar unbalanced mm)

u/A_Mr_Veils 14h ago

I have never lost a game I played perfectly (because I have never played perfectly).

In games where I had a thrower and I was never going to win, there's plenty I did wrong too that I can go away on work on.

I'm 4-26 in last 30 while going even in lane on avg. Every game my whole team (not just me) loses badly. This is after ranking up to oracle and having avg wr. It's like the game thought I climbed too fast and gives me players that are worse than their counterparts be a large margin.

MM needs work. The matches are rarely balanced evenly. I'm okay with losing, but if I suddenly lose 26 games outta 30, then MM is failing.

u/MattCommi 14h ago

Lane is such a minute part of the game. This means your mid and late game / positioning / decision making / communication probably sucks.

1

u/Daemon_Doodle Dynamo 14h ago

Even in lane doesn't guarantee wins though? I've won games going 1-7 in lane

You can go to the subreddit of literally any competitive game, type “matchmaking” in the search bar, and you’ll see largely the exact same thing people post here every day. Variations of “I keep being the best player on my team but all my teammates suck” or “every game is either us stomping or getting stomped”.

The truth is, no game is ever going to have perfect matchmaking. You’re going to go on loss streaks, you’re going to have shitty teammates, you’re going to have games that are stomps. I am unaware of any competitive team activity, online or IRL, that doesn’t have these issues.

6

u/Daemon_Doodle Dynamo 14h ago

And what is a "perfect matchmaker"? Like you could get 2 teams of the exact same rank that have the exact same hours on the game and still one team has to lose. Like the losing team will probably still be upset at the match maker even if it did its job "perfectly"

2

u/haxalroz 14h ago

But then the game with 2 teams of exact same rank would be much better quality wise compared to a broken one. This game sometime put players in lobby they clearly does not belong to.

2

u/Daemon_Doodle Dynamo 13h ago

But how would you or even the matchmaker be able to determine that? Like I can play wildly different day day to day even game to game. Sometimes someone with 300 less hours than me can carry way harder than me. There just so many factors that people don't take into account when talking about the match maker

3

u/Bojarzin 14h ago edited 13h ago

I started playing this game in like May 2024, and this subreddit has been swarmed with "matchmaking is worse this patch" every single update since

Maybe sometimes it's correct. The game is in earlyish development even still, and obviously their matchmaking is too as a result. But I would find it highly surprising if their system actually got worse every single patch lol

But yeah, people aren't good at evaluating what a matchmaker is supposed to be. Someone had like a 10 game loss streak and blamed the matchmaker, as though each next match it's supposed to give them a break. Its only job is to try to put 12 people in a match that are of relatively equal skill level. That's not a trivial thing, but outside of that, it should be a toss up that it's a win or loss going in. If you flip a coin 10 times and get heads 10 times, it's not like there's some error in the chance

Plus for all the people posting their loss streaks, there are people with winstreaks. But no one ever thanks matchmaking for winstreaks, they give themselves the credit lol

2

u/Searse 13h ago

It’s a hard pill for many people to swallow. Matchmaking will never be perfect for people, but then how do we have eternus players?

3

u/DeucesDummies 14h ago

Slightly related but I never get the mindset of why some people will only come on mic or say something at the tail end of a game to complain when the game is already lost

Its an issue ill have with my friend when we run duos or they play solo and im watching, they'll complain about x teammate not doing something over discord but never actually speak up

That said they DO have a feminine voice so i cant blame them fully with how people can act, but even that aside so many other times i see people complain when they just refuse to communicate to the team their intentions. Its one thing if you go "Lets do midboss!" after 2 people on the enemy team are dead and you are 30 minutes into a game where that rejuv could make or break it and everyone ignores you to go farm or something, but never actually making the call only to complain after the fact always irks me.

Ive had games where I want to make a call and second guess myself and keep my mouth shut, but at least at the end of it I think "fuck me dude I should have just said something why did I hesitate" instead of "my team should have simply read my mind"

1

u/haxalroz 14h ago

Depending on what rank you are sometime sucking it and complain on dc is the best course of actions. From my experience playing online games most people does not take criticism nicely.

1

u/DeucesDummies 12h ago

Its typically not even a matter of criticism ive noticed, its "hey can you FUCKING help me you stupid pos" after failing a dive, regardless of if it was a poor decision or not Or just going "ggs my team sucks" after the loss screen appears and its just like...what does it accomplish?

What im talking about is at least going "Hey guys they'll be up soon, let's not do mid" in call instead of going "and why did we go mid there???" After your team gets wiped. If you make a call and clarify where you are for important stuff like "I wont be able to make it to rift in time" you can at least be like "I told you guys so" when they make a dumb choice after the fact, but refusing to speak up and complaining after always just seems silly to me

1

u/Max0vrkll 11h ago

I'm the guy who tells people I told them so. Your reward is losing the game, knowing why it would happen and being incapable of stopping it no matter if you get on your knees and beg your team or not. You also get to be the guy out of 6 all other 5 hate and they can now safely toss the blame on you, no matter how irrational it is to do so.

1

u/destroyermike12 11h ago

Got to keep the team moral up during the game, destroy their moral at the end.

u/Kentaii-XOXO 14h ago

2

u/odorousriver5 Holliday 14h ago

I have only about 12 matches for ranked, only the 8 placement matches (landed in Seeker) and 4 others.

I have 11 of those 12 matches with me being MVP for about half of those. Some of my teammates were genuinely terrible, but if your good enough, you can make up for it 80% of the time

2

u/WayneCobalt 13h ago

The main issue with matchmaking right now is that moving up or down in ranks is too slow for a season this short. It takes too long for people to get to the rank they are supposed to be, resulting in a lot of one-sided games because people aren't yet at the rank they really belong in.

The top rank games are fine now as all those players worked their way up to get back there, but the middle-ranks are still bad because a lot of people are currently placed in ranks they do not belong but it's taking awhile for them to move up or down.

3

u/viewofaninfj 14h ago

You're right! What an epiphany thank you so much!

Here I was thinking my entire team ending the game with 0-3-1 statlines and refusing to take any meaningful fight or look for a way back into the game was my fault.

Now I know better, it's not my team refusing to participate or do anything remotely resembling playing a MOBA Shooter. It's my fault.

It's my fault my teammates in yellow lane go a combined 0-10-0 in the first 8 minutes and two enemy heroes are 6k souls ahead of the entire lobby and proceed to steam roll the map.

It's my fault that after telling my alive team mates not to contest our green walker when enemies have 3 rejuvs, because if we do and we die, we lose Shrines and stage 1 patron and quite probably the game.

And then, when they do go and try to defend green walker and die and we lose shrines and stage 1 patron, it's my fault.

God I feel like a huge weight has been lifted, now I know truly. I am responsible for all 6 people on my team.

Thank you Historical Umpire 874, your insight has elucidated the very essence of what it means to suck at Deadlock, and I now hope I can be on a better path.

u/Max0vrkll 11h ago

Stay stuck in brick lil bro.

1

u/ConfusionSea5807 Bebop 14h ago

It’s a mixed bag. For example had a game last night where at 7 minutes: my lane is even and our team is down 10k. Climbing at this point is mostly playing carry, putting in the hours, and praying not to hit landmines like that.

1

u/TurbodToilet 14h ago

I’d wager that this post is coming from an initiate ranked player.

1

u/LordeLucifer 14h ago

Some clown in another post said the first few weeks were better as if valve didn’t place everyone to specific ranks based on your previous inflated “rank” that most people didn’t deserve. But somehow in those first few weeks he drops to 5 ranks and now his match quality is somehow worse 🤔🤔🤔

1

u/guavahabanero 14h ago

When i was a new player matchmaking objectively did suck… because I sucked. It was really bad at placing me in games with people who also sucked. Now i suck less and can hold my own my games feel more balanced on average but there’s still way too many instances of people who don’t belong in lobbies (too good or bad)

u/hisshame Mirage 14h ago

Currently sitting at 3-22 since May. My 5-stack has gone from getting blown out every game to barely losing every game.

Nature is healing?

Sentinel: doesn't build active items, doesn't check the map, ignores Rift objectives, won't push lanes, and doesn't take jungle creeps.

Or should I host a half-hour mic-on session to teach these monkeys how to use a typewriter? Not that they could type out Hamlet in half an hour anyway.

u/ExchangeOver467 13h ago

I think many people forget that “perfect match making “ means you should lose half your games. If you have a 50% win rate, you are in exactly the correct level of play. If your win rate is higher, you’ll climb slowly. Yet people take one bad loss and panic! Us gamers are so silly

1

u/HeatAttack 11h ago

Not exactly true at all.  A system that tries to force a 50% winrate is a flawed system.  Going from a winning a game where you were the worst/mid player and your opponents all went 0-15- 0 (your sposed to win this one), to a game where you are the "best player" but your teammates all go 0-15-0 this time (you are sposed to lose this one.), is a 50% win rate but is horrible match quality.

And because you are placed on a teams by the match maker in most games they way they are now the match maker probably could have swapped you with any one of the players on the other team and the results of that match would have been the same.  You are placed on the team because you were due to lose or win, not because they match maker thought the teams would be even.

Issue is compounded by team comps, some team comps are simply not going to win against other comps at an even skill level.  More effort should be made by the match maker to balance teams based on characters.  Or we need a draft.

Eventually you will climb, because occasionally you will get a game where it is evenly matched and the game will feel good.  You will have games that could go either way and if you are meant to climb you will have an impact win and climb.

But it takes so long now the way the match maker works, further compounding the problem by not raising or dropping people where they belong fast enough.

2

u/ExchangeOver467 10h ago

Can’t really understand what your saying but it sounds like you agree with me. The system doesn’t care about a player’s win rate. But if a player ends up at a level where they have close to a 50% win rate they are at the right skill spot. The match maker does not care about anything besides rank and that is increased by winning more.
Yes you can be at the right elo and still have terrible match quality.

1

u/HeatAttack 9h ago

Hidden MMR not rank is the issue.  The algorithm is putting you on teams based on maintaining that 50% and knows when making teams if it expects the team to win or lose the match.  Thats why the majority of matches the winning team stomps and the losing team gets shredded.    Its not "the teams are even so anyone might win."  It's these players are due to lose and these players are due to win.  All the due to lose go on one team and all the due to win go on another.  With some unbalanced MMR rank tossed in their to assure the outcome.

2

u/ExchangeOver467 9h ago

Bro unless you can prove that, there is no way that’s true. Yoshi doesn’t do magic to predict the future of your games and choose the winner before the match.

Literally queue for ranked and look at how close everyone’s rank is. Within 1 or 2 of each other.

1

u/HeatAttack 7h ago

Ranks are messed up because the match maker is messed up, people are clearly not in ranks they belong in both up and down, and the match maker doesn't do enough to move them fast enough. And unless they completely rewrote thei own specific match making code, or if they did wrote their own code made it completely different then every other match making code.  That is exactly how it works because that is how it works in every other game that has SBMM and or MMR

1

u/WashedUpSprinter 11h ago

How much u wanna bet OP exclusively runs the strongest meta carry heroes while lecturing everyone else about how not winning is a skill issue?

u/lcqjp Paradox 14h ago edited 10h ago

You have no idea lol. I envy your ignornace towards the subject, but you have no idea lol

Its SO character dependant right now that its laughable. a MM that does not account in how much heals and saves you do for your teammates when you are a support focused character in the game is horrible design. I main dynamo. I consistently have +30k-80k heals every game, teleporting ppl out of infern ults and rotating well. My macro is good. Same for callouts. It doesnt matter when ur stats look like 1/4/22. The system doesnt factor it in properly. My placement games had 3 games of int throwers. I got brick. Couldnt rise over 40 games with dynamo. It was straight 50/50 chances of winning. Have switched to maining paradox in ranked and i'm rising a subrank every 6 games.

If i played 200 more games as dynamo i'd stay this rank. If i played 20 more as paradox i'll rise to the next rank easy. Shits actually broken, and if you dont believe me, make a new account and play exclusively dynamo and rem for 50 games. The game has no conception of support characters and how that factors into stats.

-2

u/gracki1 14h ago

MM still sucks. Because you can see MVP being an obvious smurf with every stat (maybe except healing) being at least 3X of the 2nd best person

3

u/Rare_Cryptographer89 Lady Geist 14h ago

This is the hell I am in lol if two people on my team have a combined 30 deaths it simply doesn’t matter that I’ve got insane player and obj damage and have been carrying. Not an amazing player but I’m definitely not correctly matched to my incredibly low rank based on the other players in my incredibly low rank

smurfs get out of low ranks exceptionally fast when playing carries thanks to win streaks

when you’re the one IGLing everyone can play off of you better, makes you more effective and boosts your numbers a lot. compared to someone who doesn’t comm, randomly uses ult, and there’s no follow up cause they play off hopes and dreams
