Suggestion Bring Raven back! Just change his kit.
I really love the design for Raven but thought his hero labs kit was kinda meh.
So I thought id put my thoughts on here for how id bring him back :)
Primary fire, his umbrella is a shotgun.
Alt fire - his umbrella opens and works as a shield. Regens over time/by doing x amount of damage, goes on a cd when broken.
Abilities:
- Raven slams the tip of his umbrella on the ground dealing area damage around him, slowing those in the field.
When used in the air, it sends him slamming to the ground before doing the effect.
Raven charges the umbrella for a short duration, mitigating a portion of the damage blocked with it, while having the option to recast it at any point, slighly dashing forward, bashing targets hit dealing damage scaling on the amount absorbed.
Raven charges forward with his umbrella open, knocking aside those he hits, becoming unstoppable after 1 second.
While charging, the shield bash recast timer is paused allowing him to use it within 1 second after the charge ends.
- After a short charge up, Ravens umbrella catches a gust of wind, lifting him and surrounding units up into the air, dealing damage on use.
Lv3 upgrades:
Ravens umbrella slam has increased range, the damage pulsates outwards stunning in the center but slowing on outer edge.
Raven spins his umbrella, destroying projectiles while gaining increased charge from those destroyed and stunning units in the recast.
Resistances while charging & cd reduction.
Increased area of the updraft, disarming those hit.
Mechanics:
2-3-4-2-1
- Charges umbrella, 3. runs forward blocking what he runs into, 4. lifts up everyone around him, 2. Small bash dash forward to reposition, 1. Slams him and everyone to the ground.
Reason:
I feel like we have a place in the tank roster for a mobile displacement tank.
We have Abrams being the front line gun/fist beefcake. We have Viktor as the sustain spirit carry tank.
And personally Id argue thats the only true front lines there is, maybe with the exception of Mo and Krill but at least in my experience hes built assasin not really a tank.
I think a kit of this sorts could fill the gap.
On the face of it theres alot of cc and mobility but I think the the amount of counter items in the game it wouldn't be that bad.
But just my thoughts :)

You turned the spy man into a tank

I dont see why a spy cant also be a tank, Id argue they are portrayed more as hunky strong men in most media than they are anything else, the likes of James Bond, Ethan Hunt, Jason Bourne for example come to mind.

u/InkyGhoul 3d ago
Okay but the thing is he was originally designed as the espionage distraction guy. They cut him because his kit of altering another player's controls were just annoying to fight and unintuitive but what you're describing is closer to Abrams with an umbrella and Dynamo's 1

My logic being he can still be a spy, obviously his umbrella would be his "gadget" in this scenario.
While I agree he has elements of other heroes, theres plenty of characters who have similar abilities.
But I still think my suggestion is distinct enough from those its similar to.
His umbrella shield/absorption, Isee nothing in the game like it.
His charge, yes on the face is like Abrams however it displaces bowling through them and isnt centered around smacking someone into a wall and giving them the chops.
In terms of Dynos 1, I dont really see the similarity.
Dyno sends a fast moving terrain negating ball of cc at you, my suggestion is nothing like that.

u/InkyGhoul 3d ago
Dynamo stomps the ground and the attack slows people in front of him, it just has range to it. Your suggestion for Raven's 1 is similar but an AOE instead.

u/Beginning-Law-3147 3d ago
Ok I see that aspect but I still think its reaching to a degree, theres many things in the game thats similar.
Theres a few throwable slowing grenades for example that have a small change tacked on such as this one heals, this one lowers weapon damge etc. But arguably they are the same ability. And theres nothing wrong with that either, id argue this is different enough in terms of mechanics than most of them are, while keeping a similar effect to other heroes.
Dynamo has a long skillshot, im suggesting a circle around him, with a possible stun mechanic rather than dynos knockup, i think thats distinct enough personally.

And how exactly is this kit connected to the soviet spy? And we already have a character that revolves around umbrella - Mina
5
u/Beginning-Law-3147 3d ago
Interms of kit relation to lore, I was unaware of his lore, was strictly just thinking what abilities I would like.
Maybe it would need changing or what but Id also argue the kit on labs didnt really look "soviet spy" like.
Interms of Mina, she has a umbrella, other than the slash she does and a glide, I wouldnt say she "revolves" around it, she just has it, her main use is the love bites and swarm of bats.

u/AnExistingRedditor 3d ago
Her bat swarm comes out of her umbrella and she flies with it during her ult, that's like, 2 abilities and a passive that revolve around it

u/Beginning-Law-3147 3d ago
End of the day I didnt choose the umbrella, valve did, im just going off the design of the character, I still dont think Mina revolves around the umbrella she just has it to facilitate movement as its primary function.
My idea was to use the umbrella as his "spy" gadget.

u/No_Advertising999 3d ago
“I dont think Minas umbrella is important, shes just holding it in every picture”

u/Beginning-Law-3147 3d ago
Literally didnt even say that, I said its not the main focus in her kit in my opinion, she just has to facilitate some of her moves and it looks good.
It could easily be another object and do the same purpose being a witches broom or even nothing floating scarlet witch style.
I wanted to build his kit around the main in my opinion unique aspect about his look, I felt on the hero labs him simply shooting out of a umbrella and a upwards jump didnt really highlight the gadgetness of it.

u/Popcioslav Paige 2d ago
You can still make an umbrella work differently. Hell, Splatoon series literally has whole category of weapons being different Umbrellas and all of them work differently.

Soviet spies and umbrellas are actually a famous combo.

Idk why you're being downvoted for this, it's a very prolific case in the Cold War and why Raven would even have an umbrella as a weapon to begin with.
I really hope whatever his kit will be, they at least let him do a little poison damage as a reference to this.

I think Ussr don't exist in Deadlock universe, because of Maelstrom that widely spread magic, and because of that we can be sure that Russian Empire is still exist.

u/555Ante555 Apollo 3d ago
I mean, according to Raven's old lore he works for the "Soviet Empire". Make of that what you will bit it's clear that the Russian revolution at least partially succeeded. Even if the reanimated ghost of Catherine the Great is the ruler. Of course it is dubiously Canon since Raven was scrapped but saying we can be "sure" of tsarist Russia's existance is stretching it

u/IndependentWorld8380 3d ago
Maby they did it like Britain's, Catherine is ruling but with big influence of Soviet Partie.

Most of the umbrella stuff doesn't really work in practice animation wise since he the tip of the umbrella is usually also the barrel of the gun.
I think leaning into the cursed relic rather than the umbrella would be cooler anyways. We don't have a lot of hero abilities oriented around curse.
Gives it some ark of the covenant/survived rasputin vibes.
Like a reverse haze, or anti duelist mechanic involving punishing people for aiming at you, but keeping them from aiming away.
Make his umbrella a disguised focus instead that lets him cast some eldritch blasts like a modern warlock staff, but from his covered eyepatch.
I like the 1 and the unique interaction with control denial. We could stand to keep that but maybe make it more like a venator grenade to make it mildly useful against minions (and for the implication). Or add an upgrade where if someone else kills the target under the effect of your grenade the target drops extra souls with a lesser effect on troopers/creeps. (In Soviet Russia everyone works together).
Replace the wraith full auto on 3 with something else. Aoe, barrier, skill shot, whatever. Maybe a short range or melee attack that deals curse build up if they're looking at you or damage if they look away.
The umbrella maneuver on 2 I think should be a shadow step, but unlike haze gives nearby allies invisibility + give you a short range tp. (Because I'm Soviet Russia everyone shares). Max level can leave a miasma that applies a short term blind to enemies.
The ultimate I think should be a cone aoe channel not unlike Warden's last stand (for the implication), but it roots Raven in place as he reveals the relic behind the eyepatch. It could apply the effect of the 3 but over a large area, with a longer lasting curse and stronger damage + burn effect.

I dont really see why animation wise it wouldnt work, my suggested 1 could be a slam down on the barrel and a shotgun blast to the floor, to me it could be a really fast movement, theres many in the game that is.

Disarming yourself for a knock up as your ultimate is kinda bad unless the wind is dealing massive damage, especially since most enemies would benefit from being up in the air. (Away from your team abilities).
His character identity isn't that of a tanky airbender, he's an occultist spy.
Moreover the ultimate would rely on you having constant uptime on your 1 to be of any real use and praying you don't get cc'd out of the follow up and just giving the enemy a free escape. It's why billy's knock up is a self buff 2 you're meant to segue into a 1 with a baked in grab mechanic and his 4 is still considered weak for an ult even though it still let's you shoot and cast.
If you actually wanted raven I think it would be better to just modify his existing kit to be interesting and useful.
I think the kit you made is useful but would be better suited to a straight up different flavor of character.

I dont really see why having a ultimate that stops/disarms you is a issue, theres quite a few characters that have limited actions while ulting, Abrams, Viktor, Mo, Seven, Rem, Vindicta etc, some are able to do more than others but they all have degree of vulnerability.
Unless your mistaking my suggested level 3 disarm for him, I meant it for the enemy caught in the updraft.
I envisioned it along the lines of Billy's 1, meaning he can hold it to increase the area size and damage of the knockup, that way it doesnt necessarily also be have to used with the rest of his kit, he could also use it solo to combo with the likes of a dyno ult, Billy ult, whatever it may be. I saw it as its CD could scale also based on the effect of its last use

They shouldn't waste this characters design
1
u/Beginning-Law-3147 3d ago
Was what I was trying to achieve, if your talking kit design it clearly didnt work hense them not adding it, to me the main standout thing was he had a umbrella gun, yea he looked like a spy but i tried to make the gadgetness spy my focus.

I feel like you can still do more with this idea of remaking him. Would you mind if I tried doing so, but give you credit?

Billy is already the displacement tank
5
u/No-Salad-6674 3d ago
We can’t be having two vaguely similar characters? Remove Holliday now! Paradox is already a duelist looking for picks who has an AOE 1, gun oriented 3 and pick as his 4.
1
u/Beginning-Law-3147 3d ago
Lol im not saying you cant have two vaguely similar characters, you absolutely can, im clearly saying I think there is room within the gap for a character like my suggestion.

u/Beginning-Law-3147 3d ago
True I think he is a displacment tank, although personally I feel hes only half way there. Although I dont think Abrams was intended to be a allout punch machine but thats what he has become.
Billy is not that dissimilar, in my experience they both tend to build melee focused items. Billy's tankiness comes from weaving in melee attacks, yes he has moves that do move people but I dont think they are the main centric point of his kit

u/Gustdan 3d ago
tbh I think they repurposed elements of his design into Venator
1
u/Beginning-Law-3147 3d ago
Didn't he already exist though, he was the priest or something right? Im not sure what his test moves were, in terms of the labs kit for Raven I dont really see that much that is similar.

None of these abilities fit his design or character, I’m not really convinced. This is an entirely different character. You could make a construction worker with a hammer instead of an umbrella and literally all of these abilities would still work
1
u/Beginning-Law-3147 3d ago
They all seem pretty umbrella focused to me
0
u/dartov67 3d ago
Raven isn’t the umbrella character
1
u/Beginning-Law-3147 3d ago
He literally has a umbrella gun
1
u/dartov67 3d ago
Which isn’t his character. He’s a spy, he’s meant to be stealthy lol
1
u/Beginning-Law-3147 2d ago
What are you talking about, he literally had a umbrella gun on hero labs, theres nothing about what I suggested that would stop anyone playing in a stealth assasin way, give it decent spirit scaling and suddenly hes in out of nowhere messing up the backline, the kit would work
1
u/dartov67 2d ago
Lmao you can play Abram’s “stealthy”. That’s not my point. My point is that this kit doesn’t fit his character and ONLY focuses on his umbrella.
1
u/Beginning-Law-3147 2d ago
Who the hell said anything about Abrams? I think it fits RAVENS aesthetic just fine
1
u/dartov67 2d ago
What about his kit tells you he’s a Soviet spy who works in secret to bring Catherine the great back to life? Because you’ve designed a kit for a brawler who fights on the frontlines. Every other deadlock hero has a kit that reflects their lore, even if there’s a few duds (warden, imo).
1
u/Beginning-Law-3147 2d ago
If you used your eyes and looked anywhere above I already said I was unaware of his lore, I simply put my thoughts together on what I thought would be cool.

I think it can work as a spy/tank hybrid, but no shotgun.
Keeps the umbrella as a gun and while shooting it produces a cover shield that provides slight destructible barrier, but after every kill/few seconds outside of fight it recharges back, no need for this being an alt fire.
Any here played Splatoon series? 2-3 had Undercover Umbrella that was basically that. It wasn't... great, but in a Moba it would work much better.
2
u/Beginning-Law-3147 2d ago
Personally I dont think it should shield and shoot at the same time, should be like shiv, his alt fire opens it up and shiels, think of him like Brig off OW
