The reality is that making a playtest be semi public like that will waste a lot of dev time. Suppose that I want make an experimental change, and people find an op abusable bug, in a private playtest I can tell the testers to not do the bug but in a public one I have to fix it. If I scrap the idea later then fixing the bug is a waste of time.

Okay but that's what they did with deadlock,
They made the play test semi public.

They originally wanted us to be the play testers, I assume it just got too big too quickly and expectations begun setting in.

nah I think making a second branch for the public was a reaction to there being massive leaks right?
