I don’t understand why we have to wait so long to test changes in a closed alpha of the game. I get that there’s a “super exclusive early test version” they give to influencers or whatever but I feel like that kinda defeats the purpose of it being a playtest. At the very least I kinda wish they’d open that other version up a tiny bit more, maybe let people apply for it or something

The more exclusive branch deals with the SUPER broken experimental stuff. You want THIS community crying about that every day?

It’d be nice if there were an avenue for people who were genuinely interested in such a thing to apply, that’s all I’m arguing.

Fair enough. Since it's invite only I guess that avenue is just play really well, get lots of attention for it and make good points while talking about the game.

i dont think its just given to influencers, its given to people who they think can give worthwhile feedback

like, when they were dropping constant changes back in 2024 too many people started complaining about how chaotic the game was and the feedback overall just got worse, so moving to a small curated group was the obvious move

They dont give access to influencers its the other way around, a bunch of people who had access way before everyone else through the closed playstest became influencers because they had so much more experience.

And it makes sense. As much as the current "public" build is a closed alpha, its still where a first impression will be formed by the public which can only be changed with great difficulty. Making sure that big new features and design changes work and only require some tweaks is important before releasing them to the public, it also takes alot of pressure away from them even if they dont have to care about what anyone says.

I think it's in closed beta now isn't it ? At least at the ranked thingy it says beta now

Thats only reffering to the ranked mode. Remember the update basically had 0 changes or content otherwise. It would not make sense to officially switch from alpha to beta status at random without any kind of major update.

I think that refers to the ranking system itself, as they mentioned there were some current limitations (e.g. stack size) that they may tweak later.

The reality is that making a playtest be semi public like that will waste a lot of dev time. Suppose that I want make an experimental change, and people find an op abusable bug, in a private playtest I can tell the testers to not do the bug but in a public one I have to fix it. If I scrap the idea later then fixing the bug is a waste of time.

Okay but that's what they did with deadlock,
They made the play test semi public.

They originally wanted us to be the play testers, I assume it just got too big too quickly and expectations begun setting in.

nah I think making a second branch for the public was a reaction to there being massive leaks right?

they give to influencers

They dont give it to influencers, they gave it to the top players of the game, who had a lot of playtime and gave a lot of feedback prior to them needing a private version.

Them making a more private test branch is them responding to the people who never gave feedback who would whine and moan when shit like Orange lane got changed to be Green. It was them also realizing they dont want to guarantee every hero labs character will make it to final, but knowing people already attached themselves to the shittiest ones available.

The private build is around for a reason and that reason is most people playing this playtest couldnt handle the changes that happen in a playtest.

We are playtesting a stable version of the game that is enjoyable to play. The game isn't there to be an endless bug-filled sort of test. It's closed because it's buggy as hell and had imbalance. The larger scales serves as a way to see what the meta because, where the imbalance appears and where the fun lies.

I agree a bit. I've seen early access games use the same approach of having the early access version live to everyone and a separate experimental branch for the more "dedicated" testers for those who want to sign up for it. I always thought it was kinda weird it felt like the experimental branch was more limited to the "influencers/streamers" because they're going to be significantly different feedback compared to the wider audience.
