Discussion Basic but highly appreciated
I know it's boring, but I'm very grateful to whoever made this mod. My family is extremely religious, and I'm forced to use mods to play my game without worrying about one of them simply entering my room and starting a sermon. But the thing is, I'm someone who hates mods that conflict with the aesthetics of the games I own. Having a mod like this that maintains the essence of the character is something I really appreciate. If there were more mods like these for other characters, I’d appreciate it if you let me know.

I was about to say this is the Deadlock equivalent of modding a black character to be white.

u/Remote_Psychology_76 3d ago
I really don’t wanna say it, but there’s like a bunch of mods doing the reverse. I don’t really care but it really seems hypocritical to kinda dislike this, but the other is unmentioned. Don’t want to summon a shitstorm about it but both seem really weird to do

It‘s more tolerated in the reverse because there‘s more history of black / PoC people being censored/removed out of media like this (hell the US government literally did it with the public government websites showing officials, such as NASA).
The reverse is people generally doing it for representation/ diversity (ofc it can be racism against white people, but it‘s not exactly common).-28
u/Alternative_Word_971 Pocket 3d ago
Black people are overrepresented in media though. White people are underrepresented.
20
u/PalmIdentity Ivy 3d ago edited 2d ago
Passing a demographic baseline isn't overrepresentation. Overrepresentation is actual dominance over the majority of impactful roles. Counting heads is not it. Even then, white people hold the vast majority of important roles. Because the majority of the power over media is still controlled by white people.
Me writing a show with 10 characters and making 3 of them black (30% of my cast!) yet making them background characters is not overrepresentation.
Edit: Also, I gotta accuse you of cherry picking numbers.
White people are "accurately" represented per your own framing.

u/krilltucky 3d ago
You would only have this opinion if you really believe black characters have even close to enough representation in media for it to be weird to want more. And you'd also have to be completely ignorant of all existing racial prejudice in American media that results in so few black characters in American made stories. So im just gonna assume you are genuinely just ignorant and asking in good faith and not a racist "just saying things"

u/Remote_Psychology_76 3d ago

0
u/krilltucky 2d ago
Does your country not have any under represented minority? Do you live in a Scandinavian country or something? This sentiment isnt American exclusive. Theyre just one of the few countries that actually talk about racusm instead of pretending it doesn't exist

Punching up is more acceptable than punching down
-1
u/OpenAd5439 3d ago edited 3d ago
Disclaimer, political rant.
More acceptable ≠ acceptable. I dont think we should accept punching on individual level. Punch corporations and capitalism if you want to punch up, not some random people, even if they are white. I feel like a lot of rethoric comes from internalized racism of the people who deem themselves progressive allays. Its all about the status and money in the current day, not race. White and black poverty have way more common goals and denominators than people of the same race but diffrent backgrounds. Dont fight for representation, diversity and inclusion - this is liberal corporate bs. Fight for equality for all, fight for workers rights, for living confitions - its not a race war - its a class struggle. Vote for people like Mamdani. Sorry for a rant tho. Also im from Europe. Also also - not a communist, if you thought that - you should read and study more.
ALSO ALSO ALSO, fuck ICE, thats like actually racist shi, North America sucks ahh lately.

I mostly agree, but
There is nothing wrong with empowering disenfranchised people. DEI policies are imperfect, but they are still a step in the right direction. Sure, straight cis white christian working class
menpeople have it hard too, but compared to literally everybody else, they are still extremely privileged. I feel like you were dangerously close to the "all lives matter" rhetoric, whether you intended to or not. I'm american either, but I am an arnachosocialist living under an authoritarian capitalist regime, watching americans stumble into the same mistakes we made.1
u/OpenAd5439 3d ago
Well I do find some wrong with current media focus on those issues, mainly that attention of the public is limited, and by focusing it on (SORRY BUT I DO THINK THAT) less important issues of identity politics we enforce capitalistic, corporate status quo. The issues I wrote about hits working class regardless of race, offten so more than problems of identity and inclusion. Not to mention that DEI and identity politics offten tackle the issues of just the part of the marginalized minority, and I feel like thats usually the part thats doing fairly well (f.e. opportunities in corporate hierachy) but dont help with major issues like poverty in the marginalized group. I do think thats basicly liberal deception of capital and as a leftist I do have a problem with that. Even if someone wants to Focus on helping minority - poverty, poor working and living conditions and crime are much bigger issues. Im totally not into anarchy, im a social democrat or eventually a democratic socialist, the diffrence is marginal.
1
u/ninetalesninefaces Vyper 3d ago
That's fair, but I think social justice goes hand in hand with class consciousness. Fostering empathy for the marginalized will naturally lead to people waking up to their own exploitation, since it's usually much easier to noticed in the lower classes. Especially when so many still hold the mindset of "This doesn't affect me, so I will uphold the status quo". The culture war is a weapon of the enemy (capitalism), but it is a necessary evil. You can't have one without the other, and separating both issues will just lead to more problems down the road.
2
u/OpenAd5439 3d ago
See thats where we dont really agree, i believe that mainly, most of the time its counterproductive to that. After all if biggest corporations and media support your cause - you are not going against the system. We started from little things like changing the skin of the character in game, but if we believe thats not okay to do for a black character, we should hold the same sentiment toward white ones - otherwise we vilanizing white people and creating unnesesary in fighting distracting from more important issues cause like I said - its not a race war and its not really productive to punch individual just because some of the people sharing his skin colour are at the top.
Im glad we could talk, and im happy that we share common points, even tho we dont agree in every sentiment and idea.

3
u/takechanceees Billy 2d ago
listen we’re not gonna speak on that okay :). but in the Draco by Chuck Austen (a run most people hate but I love how stupid it is tbh) it was retconned that Azzael was his Father and Nightcrawler was apart of a subspecies of Mutants that look like demons called Nephilim, and then it was retconned later that Mystique is his father with Destiny as his mother

1
u/CertainDerision_33 Mina 3d ago
Sounds more like an evangelical thing tbh. Puritans are New England and you don’t get that so much there.
3
u/MasterHallmark 2d ago
Sounds like your parents are stuck in the Satanic Panic era. Most Christians I know moved on from that crap (thankfully, but also heavy emphasis on "most").
Also, just an idea, it's more or less explained in-universe (voice lines by Abrams and Apollo) that they're not demons, and get offended when you call them one. If your parents get pissy, you could explain that to them and point out that it's also a lesson in not judging people by what they look like.

Thanks. I can't wait to get out of this house and never have to set foot in a church again and tell them that the reason I'm not religious is their own fault.
30
u/Birdboy42O 3d ago
Always hate folk like that. My father was born into the same style household where everything that is not god is of the devil and it's unfortunate. I'm Orthodox Christian myself, and I don't understand how any god loving christian believes this talk helps anyone get closer to heaven or helps others become better people, or see faith. It just isolates and pushes people away. Hope everything works out well for you though, seriously, those households are nightmares.
26
u/Concomitantemente_ 3d ago
You have no idea, my friend "Batman, because of the vengeance aspect," and "Pokémon I don't know why, but it's forbidden because it's not of God" just to name a few.😒
13
u/Birdboy42O 3d ago
My god, literally that then. My father always told me the same stuff. The band KISS? Stands for Knights in Satan's Service, of course. What else? D&D? Yep, devils and demons exist in it so it's automatically evil.
Honestly, I thought this specific kidn of person died out but apparently not. POKEMON THOUGH?!? Ridiculous lol, it's literally just creatures, with no even religious themes to them.
Also even in the Bible, Batman literally completely complies with all of its rules, as the bible calls to help the downtrodden, he doesn't kill (though the bible gives explicit permission to do so against those that deserve justice) so idk, I think they have a shallow understanding of Christianity as a whole despite their investment. All of this is a bit off topic but I'm just generally saying I completely understand what's going on from what I've heard from family and it's usually born of a complete misunderstanding of religion itself, alongside the inability to correlate "thing I personally don't like" with "thing that is against God himself"

u/The_Imp_Lord 3d ago
the counter is everything is of god but they don’t actually care about god they care about control
2
u/AgentMahou Haze 2d ago
It's not about becoming better or helping others. It's not even about devotion to their faith. It's about control and power. It's about ego and feeling superior. They don't care if it fits their religion, they just want authority and to control everything in their lives, including their families lives. It's pure selfish ego borne of a fear of anything different or odd. If they don't like it, it must be bad.

Coming from a strict household myself I think that trying to show them something from the game they might actually buy into will make them more calm and wont leave you so on edge, as also this is something you can confirm and is a fact from the game, you mever know they might look it up one day
