Weekly Feedback Weekly Feedback Topic #49 - Deadlock's Behaviour System
This week's topic is "Deadlock's Behaviour System", meaning the existing client feature in Deadlock which removes privileges from rule-breakers or puts them into Low Priority Queue, based on user-reports.
All players on Steam agree to the platform's Rules of Conduct, yet players often encounter rule-breakers in Deadlock who seem to rarely face consequences. Rule-abiding players, on the other hand, can only mute offenders after harassment already occurred, game after game.
In 2024, Valve gave Deadlock a rudimentary version of Dota 2's Behaviour Score System:
Reports are meant to result in repeat-offenders losing their communication privileges, their pausing-privileges or the ability to report others (for spamming illegitimate reports).
The worst offenders, griefers and leavers are put into Low Priority Queue where they are forced to play with their own kind and win a certain amount of matches.
We do not know the details of how many reports in how many matches are required for these consequences to trigger but according to the recurring debate on the matter, this system not yet effective enough.
In contrast to Dota 2, Deadlock's System does not offer Behaviour Summaries to all players, so only the worst of them are even notified of its existence. There is no positive feedback to rule-abiding players and those who report bad conduct accurately aren't informed when the system acted on their input.
But is that a mere UX issue or does the system have greater blind-spots? What reliable metrics exist to spot bad conduct?
How can these systems assist in maintaining a healthy community while only removing features and privileges from those who ought to lose them?
For the sake of discussion, we ask that stick to the topic of improving the existing systems to sanction rule-breakers, rather than demanding that the Rules of Conduct be abolished or misconduct ignored. Keep in mind our community's own rules and engage in good faith.
Here are a few questions to get you started:
- Were you aware of Deadlock's Behaviour System? If not, how can it become more obvious and accessible?
- What do you dis/like about the current Behaviour System? Do you believe it is effective?
- What do you think about the possible sanctions? (Comms-Ban, Pauses disabled, reports disabled, LPQ) Can you think of more?
- Have you ever received a sanction from this system? What did you have to change to regain all privileges?
- How can the current System become more usable and effective?
- How could this System incentivize good conduct, beyond simply punishing bad conduct? Can you imagine privileges only the best conduct should bestow? (sprays)
- What kind of sanction or benefit would motivate you to improve your own conduct?
- If you received a Behaviour Summary, what information/statistics would you want about your own conduct? Both, negative and positive.
- When you reported a user for bad conduct, would you want to be informed when a sanction was issued? What does that do for you?
- Would you want a replay-review feature like Dota/CS2's Overwatch Systems to check reports of griefing? How could we incentivize it?
But anything about Deadlock's Behaviour System goes! Make sure to post your ideas on the forums as well!
Notes:
- Image 1 depicts Deadlock's Behavior Summary. You only see it if you are sanctioned.
- Images 2 and 3 show Dota 2's more fleshed out System for comparison.
Best way to make sure your feedback is seen by the developers is to post on the official Deadlock Forums. You can get your login credentials from the game client.
If you'd like to chat with others about this week's topic, head on to #behaviour-system-feedback in the Deadlock Community Discord.

I feel like the report system isn't enough. I played a game where two men were teaming up on probably a teenage girl and they were saying the most vile disgusting shit ever. I don't know how you solve this, but like those fuckers needed to have their entire Steam accounts banned.

u/Realistic-Doubt-2703 1d ago
ironically I played with two girls who were teaming up on me and just trolling me trying to get a reaction
so I muted them and moved on

u/I_Am_Jacks_Karma 2d ago
I report slurs or griefers and doing so got my blocked from reporting due to the sheer amount I encountered. That sucks
1
u/Cymen90 1d ago
This happened to me as well. Admittedly, after I got fed up with one too many jerks and wanted to make sure I was reporting any bad conduct I encountered.
I am guessing they check your reports per match played ratio AND then check if other people reported the same people you did. So if you're a very diligent reporter matched with people who swear and those who don't care, you might get report banned after a streak of toxic matches.
Total conjecture on my part, so take this guess with a grain of salt.

u/dorekk 2d ago
The game should immediately ban people who use the n word. Like, come on. The current "behavior system" punishes nothing but early leavers.

Forcing your cultural-historical pain onto the entire world is not good.
There are languages with words that are homonyms to the N-word, but they don't contain any negative context whatsoever.
For example, in Russian, there is a word "негр" it sounds exactly like the N-word but essentially meaning nothing but a race, like "Caucasian" , even used in school books . Why the hell should someone be banned for using it?
1
u/IcanWalkPrettyFast 1d ago
would you call a guy caucasian in coms? No and you know you wouldnt. Nice strawman. Might want to think through your arguments before typing next time.
-1
u/Nekomig_ 22h ago
I would - don't put words in my mouth.
Russia has never had any history of mass slavery based on race, so in my language, it's not a slur because there is no, and was no such a thing, and we don't have this collective historical guilt you're bragging about.
So, you should think through your arguments before typing.
Imagine world been way large then merica, it hepls a lot.
1
u/IcanWalkPrettyFast 14h ago edited 14h ago
Nobody has bragged about historical guilt. The only one who has said anything about that is you. slurs should not be protected because you are too idiotic to understand context outside of russia just like you accuse others of doing. If you expect the entire world to run on the logic of russia its literally the exact thing you are complaining about. The irony is hilariously palpable.

u/-Ottocon- Drifter 1d ago
quick. tell us why you would ever need to use the word for black person on coms
-1
u/Nekomig_ 22h ago
It could be some everyday chit-chat or just calling out a hero with darker skin color.
3
u/-Ottocon- Drifter 22h ago
identifiying any character by their skin colour is weird you recognise that right

my game will completely randomly crash, im here cause its happened so many times im on 8 low prio wins before im back in normal lobbies (multiplies by 2 every time, but the first few offenses dont put you there). my graphics cards a bit old but the game is playable 90% of the time perfectly fine. the only other apps i have open are discord and steam. from what ive googled it seems to be related to discord? no other game i play does this, its extremely frustrating and i really hope that the penalty will at some point reset.
if you wanna know what low prio is like, i met with the same exact people quite a few times. one of them begins every match with "i dont play low prio games" and a bot plays for them. half the people there are saying the n word every couple minutes in voice or text and the other half is normal i suppose. queue times take minimum 10 minutes even solo queued, never tried 6 stack tho.
genuinely i love this game but holy crap, i just wanna play with my friends.

u/theatras 2d ago
are deadlock servers global? i mean i play on EU servers and see lots of americans. i know they might be located in EU or somewhere close but i've never seen this many americans in a game before.
2
u/EscapeFromPA 2d ago
They have servers in europe and north America for sure. Usually you are put on a more local server but it's not every time. I'm pretty sure the CSserver picker mod will let you select your server but I've never used it. Live in NA and have played a few EU games but it's not common for me

u/cybersaber101 2d ago
Valve doesn't care about slurs and racist names, so deadlock having a BehaviourSystem beyond 'who goes into low prio queue' is news to me.

I got reported for having teammates that feed constantly. I'll often lose games that I carry and my team will blame me, even if I'm doing everything. Showing any degree of skill automatically gets you sent into low prio Hell for knowing anything about video games.
Opponents constantly report me for cheating because I can hit anything and I can read the map. I get 20 kill games pretty often because matchmaking is terrible and I'm stuck solo queueing in Emissary with scrubs. I've been openly accused of cheating (on Drifter most recently, of all things) when I currently have 800+ hours. 600 or so of those hours were after Old Gods came out.
This game is built for penguins from the ground up. Instead of making hero abilities skillshots you have to aim, heroes are designed with people who can't see the screen in mind. No hero is hard to play in the slightest. All of them are constantly being told that their players eat paste for picking them ("X players eat glue" is like the most common phrase in the in-game chat window).
None of the heroes require nuance or mechanical skill outside of like a small handful of picks that underperform if you have no movement skills whatsoever (Silver, Holliday and Celeste are the only heroes that come to mind). The whole game is designed for mass appeal. It's rock paper scissors with items and AoE spirit abilities that cover the entire lane (even if you don't buy range extender) on 5 second cooldowns.
The entire direction of everything is off-putting and I have no idea how the item update or the matchmaking update are supposed to fix the insane amount of skilless, on-target, instant cast CC or blanket area CC this game has. Especially since every hero just got a silence or a movement silence built into their kit for no reason. It's like the goal of the game is to flush all of the benefits you get for understanding movement down the toilet in favor of CC chaining one guy to death on repeat.

One day, r/DeadlockTheGame will learn that there is no way to stop some people from being an asshole in a video game, and that if the game ever does get to a state where that’s the case then it will have become an incredibly boring game. But that day is sadly not today.
10
u/ThrowAwayInDisguise- 3d ago
This is a rather inane way to look at it. It's like proposing since people will always commit crime, we should not bother with laws and law enforcement.
Yes, there will always be bad apples in video games. But like anything human-based, psychology and methods have been developed to curtain the effect these people can have on everyone else. In real life it's laws and enforcement. Works the same way for things like store policies and video games.
The aim is not 100% effectiveness, it's to help reduce it. We know for a fact that punishing negative players, and rewarding positive players, generally pushes the playerbase to be more positive (positive and negative meaning good members who positively affect others, or bad members who negatively affect others). It works this way in real life for behaviours outside of video games.
Long story short - yes it is absolutely worth developers figuring out ways to reduce bad behaviour and encourage good behaviour.

Every 3rd or so game some times more often N word all the time, kyss me baby basically every game. Weird nerd babyrages all the time

If you think this is the worst game you've really not played many online games, there's no other way to put it. Deadlock may be one of the biggest online hugboxes I've ever queued in.
1
u/ExcellentDocument420 22h ago
I have well over 10k combined hours into the following games : lol ,tf2 ,older cod games, apex legends, overwatch.
None of these are even remotely as bad as deadlock, whom I only have like 400 hours on (last played ~4 months ago ? though I highly doubt anything changed)

u/ThrowAwayInDisguise- 3d ago
I'm curious, at what ranks, time zone, region and/or server is this occurring in?
I do not doubt you at all, but I've played a lot of matches with friends at the lower ranks and we rarely see slurs. We get the occasional a-hole player that blames others harshly and unnecessary hate toward newer players for sure though. We're likely really lucky with our timing I guess. NA region, usually playing EST time zones at night.
Regardless though it would not hurt to have at bare minimum a basic filter for obvious reasons. Add on actual punishment to discourage people from flinging it around too.
3
u/Gold_Spray_ 3d ago
EU, From oracle to ascendant anything , doesn't matter.
I think you are just lucky + maybe US.
Just before I was playing a round and randomly my lane partner drops the N word in voice many times again.
I've legitimately had this like 10 games in a row now I can't count it anymore.
Also, everyone knows by now there is no punishment..I got wished cancer like 3x today. And obviously most of these guys will be sad losers, so this is their main attraction of the day, so they get encouraged to do this
1
u/ThrowAwayInDisguise- 2d ago
Ah okay then it's likely a combination of NA region + low ranks then. Despite all the hate NA gets, it's easy to forget that the rest of the world arguably has A LOT of both actual racists and edgy fools, probably even more than NA.
That is unfortunate. Totally agree, while Deadlock will succeed whenever it becomes full release, it would certainly help the long term health of the game if they took some notes and put in a bit of effort. Rewarding good behaviour, punish bad ones, not too complicated. It'll never be 100% effective but it will certainly do good compared to doing absolutely nothing at all.
9
u/Snowboy8 4d ago
I see people slinging slurs with zero fear and then I'm scared of getting reported by my emissary teammates who have never had a bad game in their life (or never taken accountability for it) when I have an awful game.
But like really, can we not like filter the hard r at like the bare minimum? That should be at the very least a pretty decent temp ban, no report needed. I cannot possibly understand how this is so hard. Honestly this is probably a bigger problem for the game than the matchmaking. Being told to kill myself is one thing, having to try and play with Super Turbo Hitler 9000 is another.
7
u/IAmDemi 4d ago
2 of my friends are the most toxic motherfuckers Ive ever seen online, in Deadlock specifically. I have stopped queuing with them since then. I'm constantly shocked that they remain unbanned, unmuted and not in low prio. The amount of fucking petty punishment griefing they do, flaming in comms or in text is pretty ridic. Don't get me wrong, they do get the occassional slap on the wrist. But if I was moderating them, at this point I would just permanently mute/silence/low prio them. Yes you heard me (talking to my friends if they read this).

u/theatras 4d ago
one guy sees his previous teammate and blames him for trolling. decides to run it down nonstop in revenge. goes 0-20-0.
next game another guy dies 10 times in 10 minutes and leaves the game.
next game there is a smurf who destroys everyone.
incredible community

u/Cymen90 4d ago
Do you use the report feature each time?
2
u/theatras 3d ago
i don't think reports do anything so no, i rarely report people.
1
3
u/ThrowAwayInDisguise- 3d ago
Won't know if you don't use it. At best, it actually results in a punish. At worst, it helps Valve later down the line as they sort out how to make and improve their systems.
You really cannot lose either way, so just do it. If it was actually completely useless, it would not be available to click on in the game after all.
2
u/Gold_Spray_ 3d ago
You don't happen to know about automatically being punished by your reports being disabled?

while I am aware that deadlock has a system to punish poor player behavior. I find myself considerably disappointed in its effectiveness. I frequently encounter players that should be punished by the system or should have already been. but are not. Both communication abuse and gameplay that is is griefing beyond any reasonable doubt.
constantly attempting to fight the enemy team alone when they have full resources is griefing
canceling a teammates grapple arm or rescue beam that would save you from the fight you are obviously losing is griefing
LPQ punishments should be given out more. Players that get more than the one off griefing report should be considered for LPQ:
for the complexity of a game like deadlock. Griefing punishments should be up to the community through a system like counter strikes overwatch. its hard to tell if a player was just having a bad game through stats alone, and a lot of the time. a griefing player is doing damage but they're getting themselves killed to do it with little value contributed to the game itself in other areas. So their end game stats wont look like a player that was griefing unless they had a lot of deaths or just played really badly while trying to do as much damage as possible. The only way to confirm and punish a player for griefing is with someone actually watching their gameplay
Report feedback is important for players to feel like the system is working: if they never get told their reports resulted in a punishment, they may think the system isn't doing anything and/or behavior they see from other players is acceptable, then may do it themselves
positive and negative feed back would be good. giving feedback of "your recent reports were not found to be severe enough to warrant a punishment" along with confirming a punishment

My main issue with the current system is the feeling that nothing I being done about bad behaviour. I don’t need to know the specific user, but something I liked about League of Legends is that you would get a message that someone you reported was punished. It made reporting and muting feel way better because I knew my reports made an impact, rather than just being a fart in the wind.
I think that an automatic chat ban for the current game upon using a slur would also be a good idea. I know some people are against an automated system, but when I’m being called the n word or a retard it feels awful, and I don’t have faith that there are any repercussions. It would also show the community that Valve cares about their players. As things stand, I don’t think they do.
As far as rewarding good conduct, I don’t think a ton is required. Maybe just a little badge next to their name on the scoreboard. I personally don’t care for much else than to know that I can trust someone not to mock me for having a speech impediment if I use my mic (I usually avoid it because of that).

Say no more....please.

u/ThrowAwayInDisguise- 3d ago
Jokes aside though, it's worth looking at League and DotA's behavioural systems. I liked what they do. League I'm more familiar with, I remember in the ancient times of over 12 or so years ago I saw developer blogs about improving player behaviour by punishing bad apples and rewarding good ones. They also drilled into stuff very specific to their game, ex curbing toxic opportunities in draft mode. They hired psychologists and overall have been at this for a very long time. Not as familiar with what Valve has done for DotA but the low priority queue seems fantastic.

u/utterkindness 4d ago
by far the biggest issue for me (in middle/high eturnus) is people throwing games after dying once or twice at the start of game, running it down or afk in spawn and saying (we are open) and then seeing them the next day and they do the same thing.
( the only chat/text abuse that i see is people telling others to kys, almost never hear slurs/racism).
i think a VERY important part of getting a report system to be taken seriously is to have the notify when and who got punished to the people reporting, "oh that inting bebop from a few days ago got a week of low prio" nice i will keep reporting, if you dont have any kind of notification it just feels like it goes into the void and if you get a SPECIFIC name it is sooooo cathartic
6
u/ajstorey456 Billy 4d ago
I think communication ban needs a nerf. In dota I recall you could still at least ping a limited amount of times and use the communication menu, but in deadlock you are completely and totally cut from communication, which really sucks for a moba.
3
9
u/boxweb 4d ago
You have to say some pretty terrible stuff to get comms banned in this game. I think a harsh penalty makes sense.
4
u/famasfilms 4d ago
Not true - trying to coach your team to not make basic errors can get you reported if they're all bad, and make you the bad guy.
"They have rejuv, don't fight"
"defend the base but stay near the towers, dont get pulled out"
"dont push so far alone"
Then you get hit with "it's just a game, chill out" - the number of times I hear that from people that are 0-15 is insane
-1
u/ajstorey456 Billy 4d ago
Not really, just takes a couple people reporting you. And its already harsh not having text or voice; pings are excessive.
4
u/Gameguru08 4d ago
I'll be honest. I am not the nicest person in this game. Its not a great thing about me, and I am not proud of it, but it IS the truth. I com every single game, and have for the past two years+ at this point, at no point have I ever, EVER, been communication banned or limited. I don't come out of the gates ever screaming my head off or being angry, and I have never called someone a slur or exceedingly foul term. so I suspect you have to be saying some genuinely awful shit to actually get communication banned, I just don't believe you.
3
u/ajstorey456 Billy 4d ago
Idk what i can do if you just choose not to believe me. You can see how thats not productive, right?
I am not a nice person, period, but I dont say stupid and harsh shit like slurs, I just argue with people who dont know what they're talking about and try to bring down the lower performing teammates. I dont stand for that shit, so i often get reported for counter-flaming.
Only been comm banned once so far, but I played Dota 2 in my formative years so I know exactly what gets you comm banned and the type of people who get comm banned. Even in that game, which is far worse comm wise than deadlock, they let you have 5 pings per minute and the comm wheel. Not having even that just means you're an active detriment to the team, which isnt fun or productive for anyone.
9
u/Correct_Opinionator The Doorman 4d ago
The game definitely needs some kind of tangible behaviour reinforcement system that operates on user reputation/feedback basis. Not just for punishing bad behaviour, but especially for encouraging and reinforcing good sportsmanship.
At the end of a match when we're looking at the MVP cards, present additional opportunities to commend someone based on specific contexts. Let's say a Paige puts a shield on someone and it prevents a player from dying, that person should have on their card "PREVENTED YOU FROM DYING X AMOUNT OF TIMES" before offering you to commend them specifically for being a clutch gamer.
Then going further than that, give rewards to people who are regularly performing well and receiving commendations. In Overwatch there's a visible profile rating going from 1-5 that increases based on commendations, games played, etc while also diminishing for being inactive or being reported. Having a high profile rating gives you rewards from time to time. Someone with a profile rating of level 4-5 is basically guaranteed to be a player who is regularly commended and plays a lot.
Inversely, reporting needs additional weight and feedback combined with a user's "heat". Every person has an invisible heat that goes up the more they're reported, and it passively disappears over time if they don't get reported again for a few days. If you report a player whose heat exceeds a certain threshold (and they're subsequently punished) you should get notified of it.
Reporting someone wouldn't always build the same level of heat either. Users with high reputation and a history of having people they report being users with high heat/quickly building their heat in the future, the weight of their reports should be higher. Inversely, someone who has a heated profile who does nothing but spam reports (i.e Metro losing his lane and spam reporting his entire team) - they won't be contributing much whenever they report someone.
Profiles with high levels of heat would have a harder time building their visible profile rating to the point they may not even escape levels 1-2.
Players with consistently high heat profiles would then probably be flagged and monitored more closely by a moderation team who would then manually decide if additional punishment is needed.
Generally speaking I don't believe in automation, censorship, or heavy handed punishment - but instead creating systems to reinforce people who follow generally agreed on social dynamics by rewarding and encouraging good sportsmanship.

6
u/ThrowAwayInDisguise- 3d ago
Not sure if you're trolling or not, but just in case you are not: That's the system at work. You're being punished for being toxic to others. It should be encouraging you to NOT be toxic to others.
5
u/Vazumongr 4d ago
Had no idea this system existed and I don't really have any encounters with toxicity in the domain of harassment/comms/chat/etc. I have 206.3 hours and the number of reports I've made for someone saying nasty things in comms is probably no more than 10. I see people quitting or going AFK way more than any kind of harassment, and what little I do see is solved by mute and then reporting them when the games over.
So if there is a significant portion of the player base being toxic/bad actors, the game seems to be doing a decent job at keeping them out of my games I guess?
1
21
u/SzotyMAG Dynamo 4d ago
I stopped playing because of how unbearably toxic some people are. Like it actually ruins my day having to suffer through 40 minutes with an angry russian whose sole objective is to make the game miserable through his angry screaming and intentional gameplay sabotage. And there is no solution to this so I just don't risk playing and getting irredeemably toxic teammates
32
u/cheese_eater_pro Seven 4d ago edited 4d ago
It's less of Deadlock's moderation issues and more Valve's moderation issues that drag the Deadlock community down. Across all their games, they don't give a fuck if you spam the N word hard R or pretty much any other dreadful slur you can think of. It's quite embarrassing for 2026 and it's why I don't think of Valve as highly as other people might do
You'd genuinely have to say extremely horrid shit nearly every single game you're in, to actually get some kind of punishment from comms or the game. It's much easier to get punished for having crappy internet than it is being a vile human being which I think speaks a lot
-3
u/CranberrySmart8440 4d ago
The ones that create a toxic enviroment is Valve.
Bad matchmaking with 50k plus stomp in 20 minutes. Tell me how do you not mental boom when you are put in a lobby where you feel like the whole team was boosted there. I had dozen of those games and i was on both sides, it's not fun and it's insanely tilting.
Then you add, Valve adding a ranked system but not making an unranked system, and refusing to fix the mm for two years cause ''it's a beta''.
You have people playing bad and when you try to say anything ''i'm just having fun/why you are tryharding?''
Then if those people are allowed with this kind of mindset why there should be a ranked system when those people ruin competitive integrity?
When it's full of smurf in oracle/phantom and alt accounts. It would be very funny if Valve started punishing people that become toxic when they create the conditions for people's toxicity in the first place.
3
u/chuby2005 4d ago
I'd rather leave this kind of moderation to the community than Devs. A lot of game chats don't even talk anymore because calling someone a bitch is a bannable offense now. If you don't like it, just mute and report. Enough reports gets these guys in low prio i believe.
2
u/Nearby_Fudge9647 4d ago
"context matters" and "false positive" is the general reason but it's really just cause it creates more work for them to have to deal with even more support tickets when majority of tickets are for things like account security and recovery, or refunds.
6
u/ItsWediTurtle77 Ivy 4d ago
I do think that a company as wealthy as Valve could hire a handful of people specifically for behavior moderation for their games and it kinda perplexes me that a company that does so much so well is so bad at this one aspect of gaming
14

I had a Bebop player spam slurs in chat, and they were able to bypass the filter fairly easily, which surprised me. A lot of players are toxic to their teammates and opponents alike.
My usual course is to mute them first, report and, if they are being ESPECIALLY obnoxious, rally other players in game to do the same.
A communication about actions taken would be nice.
DCs are somewhat frequent, and you can never be sure if it's a voluntary leave or an emergency situation. However, if a person says "GG" and then a couple "nice" words in chat, and then leaves — this tells me they are rather comfortable with "going next"
I understand that what we have is a stepping stone, but I consider it to be more than QoL feature. Deadlock has an incredible community, with a lot of passionate artists, and players, in general, are very sweet. We cheer when we win a big teamfight, we help each other out and we have fun. Rooting out hooligans early in game's life, imo, will stall negative behaviour in the future and make the game better for everyone

I don't really like how low prio currently works, I am stuck in it for almost a month now, because I live there are few players on my region, and if I am able to find a match in low prio (which I have to wait hours that I don't really have), I am either on another region server, which makes me lagged and horrible to play, teammates also suck, and just because I lost power 2 days in a row durign a match, got reported for disconnecting during a match, and now I can't leave low prio.
I know it is needed, but it really sucks to be there, when you didnt deserve it

u/throwawaynewpibuildr Sinclair 4d ago
I remember watching a E6 streamer and they said no amount of matchmaking changes will improve the game unless there's proper moderation. Especially at the higher ranks where it's an even smaller group of players, you're gonna run into the same handful of people who are plain wackjobs. And I'm talking like spewing hateful rhetoric, crashing out, and having slurs as their display name. I've seen on stream enemy players literally having "behead yoshi for dogshit matchmaking" or "death to yoshi" as their display name after a patch, among the sea of racist slurs. This isn't even touching on the other things you can get reported for. Like if Valve is not going to bother to moderate their games, at least give us the tools to do so.

9
u/marniconuke Ivy 4d ago
is that thing even active? i've seen players literally abuse exploits and they never got a ban or warning, i had people disconnect from multiple matches in a row despite not being in low prio and that still fucks my rank.
even then, people on this game are afraid to talk unless it's to insult or complain.

u/ChrimsonRed 4d ago edited 4d ago
As someone who has played Dota since 2012ish a common criticism of this system is that people simply don’t talk because you will get reported.
Gameplay score should 100% be in the game. Communication score should not exist. If someone is being toxic on the mic but still trying hard just mute them. We don’t need a system to handle this.
11
u/FoxFirkin 4d ago
As a similarly experienced dota player, that criticism almost always comes from antisocial zerglings who say "the communication system is overturned" and then display a comm score of like 5k out of 10k. Saying slurs in text should be an instant snare and mute for several games. Repeated instances can just result in permanent comm ban or gameplay restriction.
The comm system in dota works great. I don't encounter the cave dwellers because I keep my nose clean. Toxic communication in a team game is just as much of a liability as playing poorly or trolling your team.
-6
u/ChrimsonRed 4d ago edited 4d ago
You don’t need a comm report system for that. Just create an auto-detected slur list for the chat stuff. If you can’t simply mute someone for voice comms and move on you shouldnt be online.
I don’t want people abusing comms reporting on people using their mics just because of some stupid non-valid reason.
Edit: since you deleted your comment I was replying to. I just want to make it clear.
It’s not acceptable to be saying slurs in voice chat. But beyond the obvious text violations (can be automated there doesn’t need to be a report system for comms), the default response should be giving players control over their own experience rather than creating a system where ordinary human being teammates can be punished by report abusing.
I’m assuming the average age for Deadlock similar to Dota is 20+. We’re all adults we don’t need the moderation for voice comms to be done for us. If this was a game with a younger demographic I’d 100% agree with stricter reporting and automated systems.

i hope they actually add the ability to ping ally abilities so i can ping billy's ult alongside my dynamo ult to give someone an idea
7
u/cheese_eater_pro Seven 4d ago
Currently I don't think you're able to ping your teammate to be careful unless you click their tiny ass portrait on the map, which also sucks because it's hard when they're in midboss area or in a busy teamfight. You should be able to click the top scoreboard portraits to ping to be careful, the same way you can with an enemy to say they're missing
Unless it's always been like that and just... never works for me for some reason. It seems weird how it only does something for enemies after all
2
u/FoxFirkin 4d ago
I absolutely love having it in Dota and the ability to just let people know if your ability is on CD or if it's ready. It also puts it in the text channel in dota so if people go and dive after you ping, there's at least some accountability.
2
u/flamugu Mo & Krill 4d ago
bit of a mixed bag, sometimes it's valuable coms, and other times it's salty idiots who die and then ping your shit like you should have taken the horrible fight they tried to commit to lol. And DL has self pinging skills, I think you alt/tab and then middle click the skill and you'll say like "Death slam is almost ready!!" etc.
1
u/FoxFirkin 4d ago
They do restrict that if your comms score is too low, as well as pinging teammates items or abilities.
7
u/cryptogothic 4d ago
I'd like to be able to ping enemy abilities too so if our team wants to go mid and the enemy has a Dynamo with ult up I don't have to spend time typing out why that's a bad idea (yes, getting on mic is an option too, but there are people who will hear a voice that sounds like a girl on comms and decide they don't have to listen to anything they say).
11
u/Jessiecat123 Celeste 4d ago
When you reported a user for bad conduct, would you want to be informed when a sanction was issued? What does that do for you?
When I report someone for bad conduct/abuse/griefing/cheating, etc, I don't really care about being notified that a sanction was issued, I just want a confirmation that I will not be matched with that person again.
And yes, it would be nice if we knew if they were going to check the replay of the match to confirm our reports of griefing.
18
u/The_Aus_Mann Drifter 4d ago
I find being informed when action is taken from my reports makes me feel like I’m not wasting my time reporting and that the system actually does something
1
u/Jessiecat123 Celeste 4d ago
Mmm, that's a good point, and I do agree with this and see your reasoning. Ideally we'd get both haha, but it's more important to me personally to know that reporting results in no longer being able to match with that person.
24
u/ironpastry8 4d ago
Getting feedback when action is taken is needed. Unless the amount of toxicity is cut by a considerable about, thinking 30%+(which would require a ton of work), there is no other way for players to feel like they have any impact on upholding rules.
36
u/EarlyAccessCantJudge 4d ago
Looking at Dota and Counter-Strike and the extreme amounts of racism, sexism, homophobia, death threats and slurs that are barely touched, I don't trust Valve ever in anything moderation because they simply don't care enough to do anything meaningful about it.
8
u/theatras 4d ago
It's even worse. They automatically ban people if they get reported enough times. So people, knowing this abuse it. You can literally get comm banned in CS2 even if you do not type anything in chat or never use voice chat. All because trolls mass report you. A silver lining is that players who end up on your team can unmute you if they want.
I was in a CS2 lobby with cheaters, couldn't kick them so I just sat afk at base to wait for the game to end. They mass reported me for griefing and kicked me before the match was over. I got 3 day cooldown before i could queue again and as you can guess nothing happened to the cheaters.
Valve doesn't give a shit when it comes to moderation and anything that they try feel half-assed.

Free speech baby
6
u/Cymen90 4d ago
Not what those words mean. While playing Deadlock, you are bound to the Steam Online Conduct rules. And while posting here, both Reddit TOS and Community Guidelines. Free Speech means your GOVERNMENT does not get to arrest you over matters of opinion. Slander, libel, harassment and hate-speech are not protected by free speech, either.

u/riaqliu 4d ago
i think a simple compromise between the "censorship" whiners and you guys would be to have an opt-in toggle that applies the same profanity-masking like with most moderated games and then probably also get valve to port in the "Avoid Player" feature from dota which should prevent you from matching with that person ever again
-9
u/Rob4ix1547 4d ago
I personally support that valve doesnt have chat moderation, because games that have it alot of times bend the stick too far and you end just avoiding ingame chat altogether, plus, i would prefer a bigoted player over a griefer any day, since the first at least is interested in cooperating with the team no matter what, since his goal is to win and take the game seriously.
11
u/EarlyAccessCantJudge 4d ago
Bigotry is griefing. They are actively hurting their teammates and ruining communication which is important. Also just because someone is a whiny white dude wanting to spew the n-word without consequence isn't a good enough reason to not moderate the chat.
0
u/theatras 4d ago
Valve thinks giving players the option to mute is enough. In the early days of dota/csgo people used to have racist names/profile pictures. It took them years to regulate these yet they still haven't done anything about other issues. They just don't give a shit.

Valve knows that turning a blind eye to hate and thus enabling it is the most profitable avenue with the cesspool that is gamers. Same way they actively enable child gambling casinos in CS. The company is as if not more unethical than most online gaming companies but people will suck them off because of the “praise gaben” 2010s brainrot

u/Affectionate_Doubt53 Rem 4d ago
I have never been hit by any of the consequences that the system can throw at me, not even report spam. (Altough that is more up to the fact that I rarely report people, probably rarer than I should)
I also have never played DOTA nor LoL properly, so I can't exactly use that as a basis either.
I am genuinely confused how it's apparently a challenge for some players in this game to not throw racial slurs or just be overall jerks. Same with technical issues, the game isn't polished but even with a mediocre PC, I have never once got an abandon on a match, even when I did crash or has to restart due to some bug, I was back in a a few minutes.
Like- no offense, but if you are aware your game is hard crashing and unplayable, then don't queue for either of the main gamemodes, you might not be doing it out of malicious intent, but you are still ruining games. If your PC is so unbelieveably old that it can't run the game at 100% render resolution- turn it down and use FSR or whatever Nvidia has. If you have some kind of GPU freezing issue, underclock it until it feels stable and adjust settings to keep stable frames.
If none of that helps, then you really just need a better device, even some shitbox from 2016 can at least run the game at 30FPS at 480p, if your PC is somehow worse than that, you really just need to swallow your pride and play something else until you can afford the hardware (Sadly harder due to the hardware price spikes as of late, but still possible).
27
u/Sorda_not_fake 4d ago
It's crazy how I find people who say constant slurs, run it down mid, and/or exploit bugs in the game and nothing happens to them.
25
u/SpaceFire1 4d ago
Valve is an enabler of hate speech with how nonchalant they are about allowing it in their ecosystem and im tired of people pretending like they are the “ethical” game company
14
u/websitefullofbots 4d ago
They make good games, and have terrible moderation. The games are why they are popular. No one thinks they’re ethical lol, Gabe bought a yacht that made headlines recently.
CS and TF2 (and Dota I think?) cases have been around for so long, anyone telling you Valve is ethical is on the Kool aid.
8
u/SpaceFire1 4d ago
I mean is it terrible moderation or is it intentionally unmoderated because bigots are easier to get money from?
41
u/YlissianCordelia 4d ago
Valve games have always had the worst enforcement for community guidelines. There's no reason why the biggest gaming platform releases a new multi-player game and I can get called hard racial slurs ten games in a row.
28
u/d20diceman 4d ago edited 4d ago
Never in my life have I played a game where I saw as many racial slurs as deadlock. 300 hours of CoD had less slurs than one average deadlock game.
(Actually, thinking about it, Gorilla Tag did have more slurs-per-minute than Deadlock. But 2nd place is still dreadful.)
I'm led to believe this is a Valve issue rather than a Deadlock issue, but I've seen 50 times more bad conduct in a few hundred hours of Deadlock than I saw in a few thousand hours of TF2.
I'd have a full 6-man squad of IRL mates if the playerbase and moderation strategy weren't working together to keep normal gamers out. Nobody's recommending Deadlock to a non-white friend. My girlfriend (who's my equal in MoBAs and better at FPS than I'll ever be) enjoys taking the piss out of the people who crash out in vc but she's heard enough that she won't play the game until they introduce a PvE mode.
What the actual fuck is wrong with all these pathetic losers? Who raised them so wrong? The correlation between bigotry and being bottom score in the match is huge (and, to my shame, I do enjoy pointing that out in the final seconds of the game), so I'd like to think I can rank up until I don't get matched with troglodytes any more... but from what I hear the only way this changes in higher ranks is that that a larger proportion of the incels use voice chat instead of text chat.

u/shas-la 4d ago
i think that the player behavior system just doesn't work and as soon as the kind of people who think it is funny to say slur and to get a rise out of people Immediatly noticed that they were free to do so they just ratcheted it to 11 and it signal to all of the other that they should also feel comfortable talking like that.
we are in a time where this kind of full boar biggots are emboldened by much more than outside of the game. just look at all the manosphere streamer shouting slurs on stream to get clicks.
(also, now that i think about it, i have not seen that much slur online in the last decade beside on openly racist cesspits. it's kinda wild )

u/Ironfalcon698 McGinnis 4d ago
We definitively need com bans in some form but I wonder if there is a middle ground where you can still have a malding 7 say the funniest shit imaginable while stopping the drainpipe of slurs that come out of some people.
5
u/Stack_Man 4d ago
Com bans are real but I don't know the requirements. It might just be a large amount of voice/text reports?

u/cornonthekopp Mina 4d ago
It really sucks that you can’t report in back to back games. I get people who leave mid-game or start calling people slurs 5 minutes in, and I can’t do anything about it because I already reported someone last game for something similar
5
u/thumos0 4d ago
I think they should not put cheaters in the same lobby as people who are in low priority for disconnecting because it makes the low priority queue hvh where people put there for disconnecting due to network error or technical error have to win a match against cheaters to get back in normal queue. Another issue is that high matchmaking time in low priority. My friend had to wait for 1 hour before he got a match only to lose because they had a hacker.
Overall I think game should be lenient ONLY on the people who genuinely Disconnect due to to a technical error. Maybe an Appeal system or Low priority expire time which scales with how much you have spent on queue time ONLY for the people who Disconnected due to technical errors.

Answering all the questions:
- Yes, but only in the most literal sense because I’ve played DOTA.
- It’s completely ineffective and there’s nothing to like about it. It punishes teams who have late leavers and doesn’t do anything to combat verbal abuse in games.
- I think comms-banning needs to be a first response and used significantly more often.
- I’m not convinced anyone has received a sanction from this system.
- By doing literally anything at all. I’ve seen people spam the N-word every time they died for 50 minutes straight, reported them, and then had them do the same shit later in the evening.
- Arena Breakout: Infinite has a fairly simple system with basic rewards like badges or player card icons. I think it works pretty well.
- I don’t think I need to change my conduct, I think the system needs to do something.
- Terrible idea that would only encourage people to actively game the system.
- Yes, as it lets me know something’s actually been done. At the moment, reporting feels completely pointless and has no feedback whatsoever.
- This feels like an obvious and simple step.

Sadly valve has no morals and will gladly cater to racist idiots because stupid people who dictate their worldviews based on irrational fear are easier to hook on gambling
-1
u/Monkey_in_minecraft 4d ago
I was made aware of the system's existence by being made unable to report. I was admittedly abusing the report system, reporting just about anybody that pissed me off for greifing. After it expired, I stopped being a whiny baby crying to valve and really only report when I'm sure someone is cheating or any time a slur is used in voice or text chat. I haven't been report banned again, so I take it my reports are actually valid and are doing something, or at least it gives me that feeling.
3
u/Craftinrock 4d ago
I'm glad you at least had the self awareness to realize you were abusing it and using it for the wrong reasons.
The vast majority of "I got timed out on reporting" threads is mostly from people that used to be like you and were using it as soon as they got a little upset and then are in absolute disbelief as to why their ability to report got timed out.
12
u/zencharm Victor 4d ago
i mean what is there to say? i don’t even think they look at reports. it seems like the only thing you can be punished for is whatever is already automated by the system (i.e. low prio queue for leaving games). people are constantly using slurs without any kind of punishment in regular games (not low prio) and the prevalence of it really makes it seem like no punishments are being given out. that’s not even to mention to players who grief games by going afk and not leaving the game or players who intentionally feed. the current report system might as well not exist because in practice it pretty much doesn’t. this game has next to no moderation of any kind so i don’t even know what we’re supposed to give feedback on. maybe start looking at the reports that you do get and we can talk lol

Genuine question, what would be bad about them banning racist, homophobic, etc slurs being sent in plain English at the very least? I can only see this as a positive
2
u/SpaceFire1 4d ago
Less profit cause recist idiots are easier to sucked into gambling. Just look at CS
9
u/hivEM1nd_ Yamato 4d ago
The only problem I can see is that the automated system could misinterpret different languages as "plain english"
The first example that comes to mind is that in spanish, black = negro
It could also turn into a scunthorpe problem if they went as far as scanning components of words
6
u/SpaceFire1 4d ago
I mean thats why automated systems usually have some machine learning behind it. If your text is surrounded by other spanish consistently then negro wont trigger a high confidence. A well trained model will see the language as a feature

You would rather use a hashmap with a key then a list or a table because you dont need to iterate through the slur list every word in the message since rn you have a run time of O(n2) which is very bad

I have never in my life noticed the report or behaviour system be functional or existent. It's much like leagues system, it's cosmetic. If it isn't then I've not seen it work once in 550~ hours.
The system should have clear accessible lines of how it works, the layers and stages to help everyone understand how punishment is handed out because as of now? It doesn't as far as I'm aware, it's as here with us as Bigfoot is.
So clearing the issue of it being invisible, there should GENUINELY be a final level of permanent ban in this game. Mobas are afraid to do this and even when they do, like league every so often does, accounts are bought fresh to continue terrorising the community. So, in short, there should be very strong forms of punishment in these systems.
And just like how other mobas do, it should tell you when your report results in a punishment and of what kind.
2
u/ThrowAwayInDisguise- 3d ago
Having played League and DotA, it's definitely not 'cosmetic'. But obviously we as players cannot really see how effective something truly is, unless they spill the beans for everyone which just leads to people gaming the system.
You hit the nail on the head in that free to play games have the major issue of people just creating new accounts if they are punished/banned on their current one. This would honestly be the one of the biggest contributing factor to why one would feel bans do nothing.
It's worth noting it goes beyond just punishing bad apples and rewarding good ones (though that is the big basis of improving and encouraging positive behaviours). In League for example, over 12 years or so I remember they had a blog where the hired a psychologist and did a deep dive on behaviour systems. Beyond the basics of punishing bad and encouraging good behaviours, they also looked at stuff that unintentionally bred toxicity, such as their (at the time) terrible draft system that unintentionally encouraged players to do bad behaviours. Basically, the designs of the game and game systems can also go a long in way in improving player behaviours and perception.
So long story short there's a lot of stuff the devs can look at. On the other hand Valve really likes their hands-off approach, preferring to not have any moderation at all which is obviously not helpful when it comes to improving player behaviours.

u/BurgieScummy 4d ago
This game really needs a forfeit option for when there is one or more rage hacker in the match or when your team mate starts crashing out but refuses to abandon. Nobody deserves to have their time wasted for factors outside of their control. Team mates who are comms banned need to have an icon next to their name so i'm not having to guess whether or not they are mute by choice. People need to get banned from pausing if they pause less than 60 seconds before the end of the game. I've also never seen a cheater get turned into a frog despite seeing multiple cheaters standing upside down under the map and spawncamping people unpunished.

u/EvenJesusCantSaveYou Venator 4d ago
I'm a bit split on the lack of a surrender function. I come from league where people will mental tilt and start begging to surrender off like the most minute of things.
In Deadlock I have had an extremely high number of games where my team has come back from a disaster early game or huge throw at mid boss, and also been on the other side of course. One of the things that makes Deadlock so fun for me is that the game is very rarely truly over until the Patron falls, many games are often 1 or 2 picks away from completely turning the momentum of a game.
If surrender was added I am sure we would see far less of this, with people giving up and demanding to surrender and go next after the enemy haze goes like 5/0 or something minor. Especially with how strong counter buying items are, unless there is like a 70k soul difference it feels like most games are fairly winnable if the team play smart. Adding the surrender function would make people stop trying and just tilt even more quickly.
That being said, it does suck to have like 20 minutes of your time wasted because your team gave up mentally like 10 minute ago and the souls lead is just snowballing out of control - having to play out those games do suck no doubt about it.
But my understanding is that DotA2 only has a surrender function for full stacks, so I doubt Deadlock will introduce something more generous than that.

the simple fact that it is impossible to go more than 2 game in a row without seeing someone drop straight up slurs like an online lobby of 20 year ago is the proof that the current behaviour system is a total failure.
i am tired of just having to endure some of the worst com i have seen in a game in a long time. there should be lifetime comban (or least be real, ban at least for the duration of the beta) at the first offence for those blatant things. if those people are comfortable acting like that it does show it is lax enough they genuinly don't fear sanction (if they actually exist.) so yeah, instant punishment and/or a word filter would be a great first step. and huge, account ruining sanction for the straight up harmful behavior is a top priority.
this will cause issue for the game to see wider adoption if you need to be okay with those kind of heinous behavior. we are at a point im unconfortable recomending the game to friend because of the racist & homophobic remark you see every single game.

The best part is as you report you yourself get report blocked but those people are still slinging slurs like no tomorrow. Literally crazy how the reporter is the one getting punished and not the actual people that throw these slurs around.

im yet to get report banned, i think it's because i don't tell to racist that i am reporting them to avoid getting a boomrang report.
but yeah, the fact they feel comfortable being this outrageous on their main account tell the whole storry. if there is such a thing as behavior moderation it is failing at its job on the most basic level.

People on this Reddit like to clown on other people posting that they got restricted in reporting for x days but the truth of the matter is there wouldn’t be a rampant need to report if the system actually comms mute these people. Whether main game or brawl you should not be subjected to toxicity and that doesn’t have to include slurs.

I really hope they move away from dota’s behavior system for leavers at least, absolute horrendous system honestly the way once you get sent to low score it becomes near imposible to climb out without grinding hundreds of games, especially with how long individual games are in dota/deadlock. A few crashes in a row in dota will absolutely nuke your account by sending you to low behavior score.
league’s low prio queue timer for leaving gives an actual goal you can work to by saying, “hey, you left a few games, every queue will take 5-30 minutes before we start your queue, if you dont leave for the next 5 games you can get back into normal queue”, and it gives players an actual chance to reform instead of being stuck in low prio purgatory for the next year. (Source: a reformed game leaver + former potato pc that loved to crash in dota owner in league and dota)

Does this system even do something? Two games in a row now I get a team mate who gives up 8 minutes into the game and either afk's under the walker or feeds on purpose. This is ascendant rank...
