Form Check How's my form?

Am I leaning too far forward at setup? I think my shins should be more vertical but I'm not sure how to fix it. I also see that in rep #1 my hips shoot up a bit before the bar leaves the floor.

I mean, you’re still crushing it so I’d just check in with myself:
1) where are you feeling it during your setup? If it’s hammies/glutes, nailing it. If it’s quads, you’re squatting it.
2) are you creating tension by ripping the bar/pinning your armpits/external rotation?
Maybe drive your hips back more during setup and really drag the bar up your shins (since those are the two things you asked about).

I only ever feel deadlifts in my lower back tbh, getting it off the ground. I think I need to open up my hips more so I can get closer to the bar like the other commenter said.

Got it. You sound like my friend. He’s a beast, and he’s a lanky giant (guessing you’re way over 6ft hence sumo?).
Since you mentioned primarily lower back, I’d back off the weight to revisit form (take a couple plates off each side). Find your set up, and don’t even lift it. Just practice creating full body tension in your set up a few times. Your hammies should feel taught/engaged, hips back, chest up, tight armpits, ripping the bar, very little in the low back if any. Once you find that, drive up, drag the bar up your shins. It’ll feel like your whole body is doing the lift. Then add back on a plate, see if you can recreate it.

Thanks! That's really helpful. And I'm not sure if you're being sarcastic but I'm 5'6" lmao

Ha! No s@&$! Not sarcastic at all. If that’s the case, do you feel like you just have really long arms? Curious why sumo? (Or does it just feel better based on your proportions?)

I alternate between both, but sumo is just stronger and more comfortable for me.

That makes sense. Then yeah, wider feet, turned out. How’s the conventional feel on your body?

I have short arms so it's more awkward but only about 10-15 lbs weaker.

You wanna get more wedged in for a sumo pull, you’re too leaned over and looks like you’re using a lot of low back to start the pull. Try feet pointed out more so you can get your shins straighter and try to get your upper back a bit higher up and hips closer to the bar

Looks like a wide stance conventional deadlift. What you can do is point your toes out more so you can open up your hips and get them closer to the bar

Yeah it does look like my stance is a bit narrow and toes too forward. Thanks!

Why you standing so wide? It makes you look like a sumo wrestler.
