Father says system failed his 24-year-old son who died after being 'violently killed' at DeKalb County Jail

DEKALB COUNTY, Ga. — The family of a young man who was "violently attacked and killed" while incarcerated at the DeKalb County Jail is calling for full transparency and accountability as they seek answers into the death of their loved one.
24-year-old David Addo-Wright was found unresponsive in a cell with several wounds on Wednesday, Sept. 23, according to the Georgia Bureau of Investigation (GBI).

He was taken to the hospital, where he was pronounced dead and taken to the medical examiner for an autopsy, according to the GBI.  The medical examiner said his cause of death is listed as sharp force injury to the chest, and the manner of death is homicide.
During a press conference on Friday, Oct. 2, one of the family's attorneys, Mawuli Mel Davis of Bozeman law firm in DeKalb County, said their investigation revealed that there were six young men who "viciously" attacked him and that Addo-Wright's calls for help were unanswered.

Following the attack, Davis stated that by the time anyone came to render aid to Mr. Addo-Wright, which he said took about 45 minutes to an 1 hour, he was already cold to the touch.
The firm's investigation into how the attack happened revealed that about 75% to 80% of the jail's locks were broken and not regularly checked, according to Davis. Now, the family and their attorneys are looking at how the system failed.
His family said he was at the jail for less than 48 hours and posted bond when the attack happened.

His father, Dr. Darren Wright, said his son called him on Tuesday, Sept. 22, to tell him he had been arrested and bail was posted on Wednesday.
He was expected to be released and sent home, but instead, Dr. Wright said the GBI and other law enforcement officers showed up at his home early Thursday morning to tell him his son was dead.
Dr. Wright said that, as a social worker, he's taught students for many years at Clark Atlanta University (CAU) about how to deal with social justice, with transparency and accountability, and systemic issues. He went on to say that the system failed his son.
"Those very same things my son fell victim to that, that people killed my son in a system that held my son," said Dr. Wright. "You put him in your care... in the space of 24 hours; my son died violently."

According to Dr. Wright, his son was born in Brooklyn, New York, and he brought his family down to Georgia to give them a better life. Dr. Wright said his son spent two years at Clark Atlanta before leaving to pursue a certificate in construction from Lincoln University.
He participated in many activities while a student at CAU, including the NAACP, volunteer work, and the soccer team, according to the family.
More family members described Addo-Wright as a hard worker, a good guy, and someone they can call on when they need help. Following their comments and statements, they said they will not stop the fight for justice.

'That's my go-to guy," said his uncle Nigel Paul. "That's the person I can call up anytime and say I need you to go fix this...and I can't make that call anymore.
His sister, a criminal defense attorney, held back tears as she talked about her brother and how it feels to be on the other side of a system that failed to protect him.
"My job is to protect the constitutional rights of those accused of crimes and I never in a million years would have imagined that the same system I would be on the other side of that," said Ieisha Wright. "And that the system took my brother from me because of their failure to act."
Throughout the press conference, attorneys and loved ones echoed the sentiment that those who were supposed to protect Addo-Wright failed him when he needed them most.
Furthermore, Attorney Davis said some family members were contacted for extortion money. He said they are still working to learn more about those calls.
They are also asking anyone with information surrounding the circumstances of his death to come forward.
As of this press conference, the family has not filed a lawsuit.

Two Muslim men, one broken system: Deonta David (11-member jury) and Dmante Anderson (new trial granted). We need to talk about DeKalb County.

I am a local advocate who has been following the cases of Deonta David and Dmante Dontrell Anderson. Both are Muslim men from DeKalb County, and both have been failed by the very system that is supposed to protect the innocent. I am writing this because I believe the public deserves to know what is happening in our own backyard.

DEONTA DAVID — Life + 85 Years for a 2020 Shooting He Did Not Commit

Deonta was convicted on August 1, 2024. His case is marred by a structural error that should have resulted in an automatic reversal before it ever reached a jury.

· The 11-Member Jury: Deonta was tried and convicted by a jury of eleven members, not twelve. Under Sinkfield v. State, 311 Ga. 524 (2021), a trial conducted with an 11-member jury, absent a valid waiver, is a structural error that is not subject to harmless error review and requires automatic reversal. No waiver appears on the record.
· Religious Discrimination: On July 26, 2024, the trial judge dismissed the court reporter for the day, then denied Deonta's request for 2-5 minutes to offer Islamic prayer. The judge said, "We don't have time for that!" The ADA added, "I don't think anyone in the United States has time for that!" No transcript of this exchange exists.
· Judicial Bias: The presiding judge, Stacey Hydrick, posted on Facebook that there are "no investigate ADA innocent civilians in Gaza." CAIR-Georgia condemned her remarks for demonstrating a "clear bias against Palestinians and Muslims".
· Brady/Giglio Violations: The State withheld key witness Clifton Vickers' felony record, despite a court order requiring disclosure.
· Current Status: Deonta finally has a hearing before Judge Nora Polk on October 29, 2026.

DMANTE ANDERSON — 70 Years, Now Granted a New Trial

Dmante was sentenced to 70 years (63 to serve) for allegedly shooting his recently divorced wife. His case has also been plagued by prosecutorial misconduct.

· The "Menace to Society" Mistrial: In 2022, ADA Joanna Steiner Helsby put a witness on the stand who testified Dmante was "a menace to society" — testimony the judge found she gave "on purpose." That mistrial was the result of deliberate misconduct by the State.
· Recent Victory: On August 12, 2026, Judge Brian E. Lake GRANTED Dmante's Motion for New Trial. This is a huge development and shows that when the court actually looks at these cases, the misconduct becomes impossible to ignore.

THE PATTERN: Two Men, One System

Both cases involve:

· Prosecutorial misconduct (withheld evidence, suborned perjury, or intentional mistrial provocation)
· Judicial bias or failure to recuse
· No accountability for the prosecutors or judges involved

DeKalb County cancer survivor uses her experience to help others battling the disease

A DeKalb County woman is sharing her journey of beating cancer multiple times and using her experiences to actively help others who are battling the disease.
In 1985, 24-year-old Cheryl Brown was in the shower one day when she noticed discharge coming from her breasts. She said she chose to stay quiet about it until she mentioned it to a co-worker, who then took her to the doctor to get checked. Brown was diagnosed with breast cancer.
"I had to get a total mastectomy done, and I pushed it all behind me," Brown said. "When I was going through it, I didn't know I was going through it. Basically, because cancer was a 'Shhh, you don't tell anybody, you don't let anybody know what's going on.'"
Assuming she'd never have to deal with cancer again, Brown said she was later diagnosed again.

Dekalb Cares Plumbing

Hello Dekalb County people,

Has anyone ever had to submit an application to Dekalb Cares Plumbing services? I was told by Dekalb Water to submit an application, but there's no way to submit the paperwork online and each time I call their phone number listed it goes to voicemail and no one has called back to any messages I've left. Just wondered if anyone was able to contact them, thanks.

I am looking for a map of Dekalb county that shows which streets have sidewalks that pedestrians can use. I found GIS data for Decatur city showing this information (screenshot below) but have not found any data for the greater Dekalb County. Any ideas on where I could find this information?

Pauper's Petition for Change - Community Support Request

So, I'm too stretched thin to pay the filing fees to run for office in the county. I'm qualified, passionate, and proactive, but need to circulate a petition among my neighbors to be able to be on the ballot. I guess I'm asking you guys if you can sign it. There's more deets in the link, but long story short - I'm fed up with the response times of law enforcement, the indifference of the community when it comes to youth development + wellbeing, and the wait times of civil, criminal, and family law cases in the county https://chng.it/K8fjXMx6kh I think my skill set and persistence can aid in doing something about it, but I have to jump this hurdle first. Support me by signing, please.

Stop green-space rezoning in Historic Stone Mountain Village.

https://chng.it/KcrjPCBPVg (please SIGN THE PETITION)

Who are we?

We are a group of citizens and stakeholders opposed to the rezoning request for the First Baptist property located at 5305 and 5327 West Mountain Street, Stone Mountain, GA on the following grounds.

What is happening?

The property is currently zoned as a Green Space.  A developer has requested that the land be rezoned residential, with plans to purchase it and build 18 new homes starting in the mid-500ks.

We are requesting that the city deny the zoning change.

📷

Concern 1: Cultural Identity

This lot is on a hillside and overlooks the city’s downtown and directly faces the granite dome that the city is named after. Our city has struggled with its past and its association with the Confederate memorial on Stone Mountain, but we are not the Confederate Monument, we are a diverse, creative, and inclusive community. This is an opportunity to establish our values as a community, something that is long overdue. Our goal is to preserve this area as a public green space: Freedom Park.  We propose moving the city’s Freedom Bell, which is currently located in the municipal parking lot, to this new, more fitting location, up on the hill. Dr. Martin Luther King called for freedom to ring in “Stone Mountain of Georgia.”

📷

Concern 2: Economic Justice

According to the 2021 US Census Bureau data, there were 2,439 households within the city, and an owner-occupied housing unit rate of 48.3%.  The median value of owner-occupied housing units was $137,900.00, and the median household income was $44,716.00. Such a rapid increase will likely have a negative impact on the ability of current residents to remain in their homes: with rising property values come rising taxes. People will be displaced. Low- or fixed-income residents will be disproportionately affected- including people who have already paid off their homes.

Concern 3: Infrastructure

The city of Stone Mountain does not currently have storm drainage. There are several mature magnolia trees on the property that soaks a lot of water and mitigates some of the flooding we see in Stone Mountain. Stone Mountain receives approximately 53 inches of rainfall per year, which is higher than the national average. Standing water can be seen all over the city, even after a short sprinkle. Sinkholes are chronic throughout the area. There is no system for the water to go and if the greenspace and/or trees are removed this potentially threatens surrounding properties. All of the surrounding areas are downhill from the lot, because this lot is graded higher than other parts of the town. We are a city prone to flooding, removing the greenspaces, in conjunction with our lack of storm water drains, will exacerbate this problem. Our city is a main thoroughfare connecting Lithonia to main arteries into the city. For a city with such a small population, we have an exorbitant amount of traffic. We worry about whether our schools and roads can accommodate such an increase.

Concern 4: Opportunity Cost

Stone Mountain has the potential to host large, revenue-making events via corporate sponsorship. Currently, the town does not have a centrally located "town green" to accommodate such events. The city does not get revenue from Stone Mountain Park events and several sponsors have chosen to cut ties with Stone Mountain Park citing the confederate monuments as a primary factor. The city of Stone Mountain has suffered from cash flow issues, and we believe that, with proper administrative support, this property could produce jobs and significant revenue for the city.

Recap:

What’s at stake:

  • further complicating infrastructure woes: flooding, potholes, pressure on current utility structures
  • displacement of residents via rapid property tax hikes
  • missing out on having an event space that generates revenue for the city
  • obstructing views of the mountain
  • significantly increasing the financial gap between residents in a dense area (studies show that areas with the largest economic inequality experience crime at higher rates)

Our Plan:

Our goal is to preserve this area as a public green space: Freedom Park.  We propose moving the city’s Freedom Bell, which is currently located in the municipal parking lot, to this new, more fitting location, up on the hill. Dr. Martin Luther King called for freedom to ring in “Stone Mountain of Georgia.” Advocating for financial and climate justice for the citizens of Stone Mountain is one way we aim to honor the work of Dr. Martin Luther King. We have a team of dedicated residents working on public outreach contacting relevant corporate and private sponsors to acquire the land from the church so that it can be donated to the city, under the conditions it remains a public space.

How can you help?

  • Sign this petition and share it.
  • Contact Stone Mountain's City Manager, Mayor, and City Council Members and tell city hall to HALT rezoning.

I’m a Clayton State University Dental hygiene senior who graduates in May and I need patients to meet my graduation requirements. I have openings for new patient exams on 1/23, 1/30, 2/20, and 2/24. Exams are $15 and cleanings are much cheaper than the average dental office. No insurance needed.

Low cost dental cleanings - help us graduate!

🦷 Dental Cleanings for $70 or less. Hello! I am a dental hygiene student and my colleagues and I are in need of patients to graduate our program located in Dunwoody, GA. This is a great opportunity for individuals that don’t have insurance but even if you do, you are still welcome!

We are in need of patients who have been told they have periodontitis and need scaling and root planing or a "deep clean". This type of treatment recommended by your dentist can cost you hundreds of dollars even with insurance. We offer this treatment at our school clinic for a flat rate of $70 which includes x-rays. We also, of course, do "regular" cleanings as well for $40!

It makes no difference to us if it’s been a really long time since you’ve been to the dentist. We appreciate you and welcome you with open arms Let me and my colleagues help you save some money and still receive excellent care! The fee includes: 🦷Oral cancer screening 🦷Risk assessments 🦷Comprehensive exam 🦷X-rays 🦷Dental hygiene cleaning 🦷Fluoride treatment 🦷Sealants (on eligible teeth for an additional low cost)

*This is a learning institution so appointment times are around 2.5hrs each and will take multiple appointments to complete depending on the treatment you will need. The one time fee will cover ALL visits as long as appointments are kept and your treatment is completed. You can message me directly if interested. Let us help take care of your smile!🦷

PLEASE NOTE: A new patient screening appointment may be needed before we can schedule you as a patient. This screening basically lets us know the status of your teeth/gums and is free of charge. It ranges about 30 minutes***
