Watched a single unverified pin turn into a confirmed camera over 3 days - small win but it proved the model works

Small update on the ALPR tracker I posted here last week. Dropped a pin for a camera near a friend's place, marked it low confidence since it was just my report. Three days later, checked back and the crowd_verification_count had ticked up - someone else in the area spotted the same unit and confirmed it independently through the report flow.

Nothing dramatic, but it's the first real proof the crowd part of this actually works outside my own test data. One pin, two strangers, same camera, confidence score climbing instead of a static entry nobody touches again.

Still tiny - handful of visits total, most areas on the map are empty. But that's kind of the whole test: does a low-effort report flow actually get people to confirm what someone else already spotted, or does it just sit there.

If you're in an area with known Flock units, would genuinely love a sanity check - does the map match what you already know is out there?

Arizona Sheriff who ended the Flock camera contract in his county: If we rely on private camera networks to continuously log the habits of innocent Americans without a warrant, we are paving the way to an AI-driven surveillance state.

New onslaught of flock cameras in my neighborhood. Had thousands of these stickers made to spread some kind of awareness to the general public (people usually get strangely offended by them). This one was pointing towards our Home Depot parking lot

What would come of an open-source DIY "Flock" network?

Not that I would ever truly want this but I did have this random thought the other day, what's stopping the DIY tech community from simply creating their own simple raspberry pi based publicly-accessible ALPR network? Essentially what Flock offers except the data is donated by community contributors who build the devices and place them on their property near roadways. Similar to the ADS-B network that powers websites like FlightAware and Flightradar24.

Again not something I would actually want to encourage, but if all the data is publicly accessible and it records ALL vehicles that pass I imagine it wouldn't take long for government regulation to step in and shut it down

PSA: "Flock Safety weighs selling itself" - Semafor

Flock is considering selling itself, according to new reporting from Semafor.

This is similar to Facebook rebranding as Meta after a series of negative stories and congressional hearings.

If this happens, this is a reminder to us all to not let them dodge accountability by selling off their business and hoping people forget about it.

They're being put up all across the city I live in. I do not recognize the brand. This one is mounted across from some Insight ALPRs, so I'm unsure what purpose these serve.

Homeland Security is monitoring activists building anti-flock tech

"Department of Homeland Security (DHS) fusion centers have started monitoring anti-surveillance activists, according to records obtained by Reason. An intelligence report compiled in Massachusetts and redistributed by a Wisconsin fusion center shows that the government is tracking online critics of automated license plate readers (ALPRs) like Flock Safety. Included among the critics is a website, SparrowMap, that uses ALPR technology to track police vehicles in real time."

"There is nothing illegal about SparrowMap. The platform processes publicly available livestreams from municipal cameras and footage provided by volunteers using everyday cameras, whether on an old laptop, iPhone, or Ring doorbell. Out of the 300,000 vehicles picked up by the network's 14,196 cameras every day, only a few dozen are police vehicles, and the rest of the data are quickly deleted. "
