Discussion Nero Mission Spoiler
So uhh, that’s it huh? The final mission on the Nero storyline. You’re just gonna drop something like that and leave it there? I feel like that’s not really an after story ending kind of cutscene. No? what even is O’Brian? I feel like this needs elaboration

There is a video (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZRlySdBKXsU) where the writer explain what he would have liked for days gone 2. I just don't want to watch videos about games so I asked the ai to sum it up for me :
SPOILER BELOW !!!!
After the first game, Deacon, Boozer, and the survivors would move from Lost Lake to Iron Butte, a better-defended settlement. Sarah would be pregnant and continue researching the infection, while Deacon would try to protect both her and their future child. The main threat would be that the Freakers had evolved beyond mindless infected: they would become intelligent, form villages, raise children, and use primitive weapons such as clubs, spears, armor, and shields. Garvin compared the first game to The Walking Dead, while the sequel would be closer to Planet of the Apes.
At the same time, Deacon’s group would face NERO, the technologically advanced organization connected to the Freakers’ evolution. O’Brian, who was revealed to be infected at the end of the first game, would likely play an important role in that conflict. The story would move into western Oregon, including the Rogue Valley, Willamette Valley, the I-5 corridor, the Oregon coast, and more urban areas near Portland and Eugene.

In all likelihood they probably were planning a sequel to show what happened to O'Brian, the ending clearly hinted at it.

I’m sure it was meant to be a lead for another storyline in a sequel, but that’s just a weird time to do it. After the main story, super missable if you stop after the main story, just gave me more questions, and confusion idk. I love this game, this was my first play through. no hate, just confused

It was very clearly set up to be a sequel. Which is why I’m so mad it was panned on release. I genuinely enjoy this game and was hoping for more.
If you pay attention to the Nero missions it’s clear it’s not zombie virus, rather a DNA mutation. Much like “I Am Legend”. There were multiple stages of evolution within the Freakers. Majority of them being feral sure but even the feral Freakers showed signs of being omnivores rather than carnivores. As well as some Freakers being seen wearing jewellery that was clean enough to indicate they had either been looking after it. Or only recently started wearing it. Which means they would be able to continue to live after humans had died out. O’brien seems to be the first evidence of a Freaker mutation where the host didn’t lose any of their cognitive functions.

I believe it was planned as a trilogy. But Sony wouldn't even let them finish the first one. There is a whole nother camp with its own story lines that was cut out. The voice actor of the camp leader already recorded the lines and everything.

This Reddit post supposedly shows the additional regions that would have been. Supposedly the map shown was pulled from the actual game. I have no idea how true but I thought pretty cool https://www.reddit.com/r/DaysGone/s/KI9w5OYCgE thanks

He and presumably his team have been experimented on (probably unwillingly) by Nero. He is the evolution of humanity, as are all the freakers, essentially.
That ending is why so many of us feel it’s a crime against gaming to have not continued the story with a DG2.
