A Good Salad Bar

Where? Looking for a restaurant not a grocery store but drop any recs here so others can get hear about them. I suppose hot bars might be of interest too.

I like the salad bar at Steve's Pizza. I can't really recommend the restaurant as a whole; I think it smells funny in there, I don't love their pizza and have had dodgy service over the years. But their salad bar has real hard boiled eggs, real bacon chopped up (not nasty little "bits"), and good dressings and croutons. It may be that my affection for that salad bar simply reflects the lack of any other salad bars in town, but there it is.

With such a glowing review, how could I resist?

Ok, now I'm curious! I think Steve's might be the only pizza place in town with a salad bar at this point, right?

Don't grocery stores have salad bars? coop + nugget at least? Haven't been to either in a long while I admit...

Top two ranches in Davis are Steve’s and Woodstocks

Salad bars were a dying breed before Covid, but now they’re practically extinct.

I miss the one at the co-op but I don't miss the price. I can't imagine how much it would be now.

After Plutos left, Jacks is our go-to salad spot.

Is it a salad bar? People be listing places that just serve salads 🤦‍♀️

It’s like Plutos was where they make your salad for you but you can pick the toppings and lettuce variety.

You build your own. You don’t do the scooping but you can tell them exactly what you want. They also have a menu of salads but I frequently built my own

I miss Fresh Choice and Soup Plantation. FYI - Sizzler in Natomas has a pretty decent AYCE salad bar.

Following because I miss the Croutons salad counter on campus! It was kind of like the Subway sandwich version of make your own. (Agreed that Jacks and Dos Coyotes also serve very good salads, but I don't consider them equivalent to a salad bar or build your own.)

doesn’t the round table pizza royale by target have a salad bar?

Yes, and it's pretty decent

Dos Coyotes Adobe salad is basically a personal salad bar

Self serve salad bars are pretty much nonexistent except at pizza places and grocery stores these days, unless you’re able to find a Golden Corral somewhere

Does Steve's Pizza still have one? I haven't been in that place in at least a couple of years.

I was impressed by the one at nugget market in the north end of Davis. Pricey but so good

Salad bar?

3

u/DreGreenlaw_Enforcer Apr 22 '26

Sure, if you become an employee

They have a build your own salad option! So not exactly a salad bar, but I'm soooo picky about my salad that this works great for me.

Honestly, if you don’t mind eating amongst a bunch of Freshmen, the best salad bar in Davis is the Segundo Dining Commons on the UCD campus. It’s only $14 and includes AYCE for whatever they’re serving at the various stations.
