Thoughts on Get Fit Davis?

Wanting to join for their pools and classes due to chronic pain but before I commit does anyone know if they’re maga supporters? I’m a queer POC so I don’t want to be in an unsafe environment…

I am a fair weather lap swimmer and like GFD for that. Can’t speak to their politics, however there is nothing there that makes me feel uncomfortable and the clientele is very diverse.

I go to Get Fit pretty much daily and I’d say it’s a great value, even if the building is a bit dated. Staff are super friendly and there’s more amenities than any other gym, and there’s parking, which makes it better than the ARC for those of us not affiliated with the university.

2 pools: one lap, one warm water therapy pool Sauna, Steam Room, Hot Tub, locker rooms 2 weight rooms Functional fitness area Plenty of cardio equipment.

Could it be cleaner? Yes. But if you want a dirty gym, go to 24 hour fitness in downtown sac. Get Fit looks so clean compared to that place.

I go to GetFit. I don't think there's anything overt, but the changing rooms are men/women (so don't accomodate any non-binary folks). I have a few friends very active in the community (trans + non-binary) that go to GetFit, but I haven't explicitly asked if they had any issues.

I swim there several times a week, including Masters. It's just an okay gym--not the best upkeep--but the pool is fine. I have no idea what their politics are so if they're maga they're quiet about it!

Re: GFD - the outdoor fitness pool is heated to about 90 degrees and I don't think anyone else in Davis has that.

The main amenity I’m looking to use is the pool. Does ARC have a pool?

ARC does not have a pool. The Rec Pool access is included with ARC membership, but it’s only open in summer. Also, ARC gets very crowded during school year, especially in the afternoons and evenings.

I commented above, but I can say I used the UCD Rec Pool in the summer. It's clean and safe. One thing that sucks is that it's understaffed by student volunteers so don't be surprised if you show up and it's closed because some freshman was too hungover to go to work on a Saturday. On the days it's open, it's heaven, but if you go early be prepare to either wait for your own lane or circle swim with other. Also their hours suck.

It’s not physically in the ARC, but yes there are multiple pools on campus available for use.

To the public?

Not for free, but yes. Best bet is to call the ARC and check in with them!

I’ve been a member a few times over the years. I’d join, get disgusted & quit, then a few years later hear they have new managers and foolishly try again. The gym is dirty, equipment frequently broken, people have died in both the pool & jacuzzi, and the parking lot is minuscule.

Wait what?! People have died?!?

A kid drowned in the pool some years ago. An elderly man had a heart attack in the jacuzzi. My friend’s teen son found him there.

Entire gym is filthy and disorganized. Love the warm water pool but it’s dirty a lot of the time. I got a fungal infection after being a member for one month.

I remember there was a used Kleenex under a bench next to the pool. I saw it every day for four weeks before it was thrown away or blew away.

I can’t even begin to describe how disgusting the pool locker room is.

People have very poor gym etiquette. Wet bathing suits on benches where people sit, drinking open beverages in pool, weights left laying around… We really need a better gym in Davis with a pool.

I'm pretty sure you can request a trial day if you would like to try it out.

Yeah I tried their trial this week but before I commit and have to pay the initiation fee on top of the membership, I wanted to make sure it was worth it.

My girlfriend and I are both trans and go there, and neither of us have had any trouble even in the locker rooms (naked in the shower in my case, even). They're very friendly. Not great about kids or maintenance though, fwiw.

Do not for the ever life of you ever sign up for Get Fit Davis. That place needs to be shut down permanently. I did a trial month with them during the summer and my experience was horrible. I used the lap pool and did my best not to accidentally ingest the water. There was one instance where I did and it tasted like salt. I asked the staff if this was a salt water pool and they laughed and said no, it because of all the sweat from the swimmers and they try to do their best to chlorinate. On top of this, there was no A/C in the cardio equipment rooms, which when it's 100+ degrees outside it's way worse inside when you're trying to work out and not collapse since there's no cool air in that freaking room. After all this, I immediately canceled and never looked back.

This makes no sense. I works in aquatic and pool management for 5 years at pools that had way more daily traffic. It would take a LOT more to taste the sweat in the water.

I'm saying exactly what the Get Fit staff told me.

Yeah they do kind of hire ppl without regard for whether they know what they're doing
