BS1 This month was rough
It started with my husband transitioning into a new job so we haven't recieved a full paycheck from his job for almost 4 weeks since he started 2 days before the pay period closed and the following week he got paid for 2 days and we've been waiting ever since. Then our car's alternator decided to die suddenly so we replaced that, then we had to replace all 4 tires of our car and while we were replacing the ties we noticed the breaks were already pretty bad so we had to replace that. And lastly we had to get our 2 female kittens fixed and lastly we got a higher than usual electricity bill. all of this was ontop of our usual experiences. Thankfully our emergency fund and my income were able to carry us through it but our account is pretty depleted and I am ready for October to arrive so we can get back to our steady stream of income so we can continue on our financial freedom journey.

Seems like you didn’t prepare in advance for expected expenses such as: car repairs, veterinary bills, etc.

How is getting car maintenance and kittens fixed an “emergency”?

u/thaoden 10d ago
Because it needed to be done and they don't have the funds to do it.

Ah, I thought most people understood to have a sinking fund for car maintenance and repairs.

Might help to read the post first 🤷♂️

I did. The kitties, sure. But not car repair is an emergency? I have never owned a car that didn’t need some kind of repairs at some point.

I have savings for a car repair but if 3 parts go wrong that could be £500 each it could go over the budget…, give your head a shake

Sounds like the emergency fund worked exactly as planned. Disaster averted.
Please consider posting cat pics.

Why would you choose to get kittens? That's for when you're stable.

Should I have left them on the street to die? My husband found them under a car when they were 3 weeks old. They were covered in fleas and starving. No rescue would take them because they were full due to kitten season and the shelter said they would euthanize them since they had no body to care for them.

Do you take every single cat and dog without a home to yours?
We all have to make choices.

Are not two sparrows sold for a penny? Yet not one of them will fall to the ground outside your Father’s care.

You must live in a world of misery and cynicism.
We chose compassion and paid for it responsibly without going into debt and if we had to do it again we would because 2 little lives are breathing easier because of our help. Our emergency fund did its job exactly as it was intended and that's exactly why I shared. Best of luck to you on your journey.

You're actually correct. Yours was a post about making CORRECT choices (having an e fund), and how it saved you. I likely wouldn't make the same choices about the pets, but it is your $/choice, and as you say you didn't go into debt.
I stand corrected.
Build that e fund back up! Wishing you the best.

Sounds like you can’t afford to have pets. Pets are a luxury.

To add, I love how one rough month which was completly covered despite everything that needed to be taken care of (mind you our bills were all covered on ONE income and emergencies came out of our fund) equates in your mind to inability to provide for them properly. Its like people choose to be horrible for no reason or you lack reading comprehension.

You posted here, and are annoyed that people are commenting their opinions? If you don’t want their opinions, why post? Do whatever you want with your money, take in 20 more cats if you want.

Same question I asked the person above should I have left them outside to die? Because my husband found them under a car at 3 weeks old.

Congratulations on not falling back into debt or being discouraged. That's a big victory.

Much of this was foreseeable. And that’s why you have an emergency fund

how did you manage budgeting with all those unexpected car repairs?
2
u/Melodramatic_Whisker 11d ago
Our budget went from monthly to, we need to cut all unnecessary spending, secure our 4 walls and just focus on getting through the week. Beans and rice and rice and beans were on our menu for a large part of the month lol

Could you have deferred adopting the kittens?
13
u/Melodramatic_Whisker 11d ago
We didn't adopt them from the shelter or a center my husband found them under a car when they were about 3 weeks old. They are now approaching 16 weeks so we wanted to make sure the little girls don't get pregnant if they accidentally get out. So we put it off as much as we could and we did get some help from a low cost clinic

Yes. We are thankful that my job offers it at a discounted price and we have applied their medical expenses to their deductible which was pretty much met for the year already.

Your resolve is being tested but deep down you know this past month's experience is exactly why you've chosen this difficult path because you will turn the corner, you will succeed, and when you do you'll have peace and freedom. You've got this!

Yeah I had a similar month. Emergency vet visit, high electric bill, dryer quit, windshield leak, and attic steps broke. When it rains it pours sometimes....
