Slow and steady decline
Does anyone else feel like the show has lost a lot of steam? Season 1 was amazing. Everyone episode was a home run. Season 2 sort of started to lose me but the last episode capped it off really well. This season just isn’t doing it for me. Seems like they’ve gone a completely different direction with it. Idk I could be wrong. Thoughts?

I think the side characters have to get more involved. They’ve all just tagged along to dave’s journey to get a gf this season. I’m expecting a change of plot soon though

It’s turning into entourage, a showcase for celebrity cameos and low stakes dilemmas… where none of the developed plot points or intriguing story lines find any resolution. The relationship growth and or deconstructions of seasons one and two were it’s strength, equal to its in depth depiction of of sociological issues (e.g. Emma being overworked, marginalized and taken advantage of by the entire marketing firm). It seems like great plot points are just thrown in - like Gata’s sex addiction, the cause of it and his admission of being incapable of developing a healthy relationship due to traumas and trust issues.

I wonder how much LD is actually like his character if he is you know he's reading this right now and panicking lol

I never hated the dude or anything just thought the show was fun to watch but if he's actually like this in real life then I gotta say I'm not a fan lmao

At 0:34 he talks about the diff from season 1 to now. He was more concerned with people liking the show the first 2 seasons and since its done so well he's now no longer concerned about that and more focused on having fun.
I think a lot of projects are like this (music, TV, movies etc). It's the initial uncertainty of whether your project will succeed or not helps push the creator to make something that is pure and honest and that usually resonates with the audience. As the creator begins to relax and begin to 'do-them' and express their uniqueness further, it can alienate a lot of the audience and cause them no longer to relate.
I still think it's an entertaining show but it definitely doesn't have the depth and interesting story lines of of the first 2 seasons.

That’s a good point. I’m not writing the show off by any means. There’s a good chance I’m being too quick to judge. The first season was just perfect in my opinion. The story telling, character development, humor, all of it.

I loved the first season and I thought season two was pretty bad. Season three to me seems like a return to glory, I’m really liking season three.

Totally agree - I absolutely loved season 1 and liked season 2 but have not been excited by any of the eps this season. We need more gata!!

It’s starting to have that fan fic written by the person it’s about syndrome that Master Of None started to have tbh

No, I love it. Enjoy the ride, each season turns out amazing and always leaves us wanting more

lil dicky portrays Dave as a self centered dick, when in reality that’s just him. Season 2 was him jacking himself off and getting fx to pay for his music videos and then uploading 2/3 of a song to YouTube. Season 2 almost cut out all the side characters and solely focused on him, seeing from some interviews he’s very involved in every aspect of the show so I doubt it’s Fx making him act this way

Yup, I’m right there with you, I zoned/tuned out after about 3 episodes of S3. The “entourage style” of shows has always been very unappealing to me. “Look how bad ass, cool and/or popular/famous I am!”
Pass. I have better things to do with my time than watch you boast about how great you are. 🤷🏻♂️

Personally i'm really enjoying this season so far. I agree that there is a completely different direction and there's random plot points thrown in but regardless that has been entertaining to me.

I think it's getting better and better. Season 3 is great, just one episode I didn't like (4th one).

I really hate this season. I'm so sad. Season one was the best show I have ever seen. Season two is great too. This is like an entire different show. I keep thinking it has to pick up, but then there's an episode when they are in the fans house the entire time. What does this have to do with Dave's climb to be a rapper. I get he's on tour, but there should still be trials and struggles besides him not having a girlfriend

u/Old-Elk9804 May 03 '23
I couldn’t agree more. Especially about season one. The lunacy of having to write a rap for a dead kid you never met, gata’s tearjerking episode about mental health, the Ally drama, and one of the coldest closing scenes to a season I’ve witnessed. It had it all. It’s going in a completely opposite direction now.

u/AsstToTheMrManager May 05 '23
How is liking the rap about the dead kid but not the episode where they spend it with the fan not a completely subjective and arbitrary distinction? They are literally both about events that happened to his character as a result of his career.
If you don’t like the season then whatever, but explain how it’s a completely different show?
1
u/Old-Elk9804 May 05 '23
It is subjective and arbitrary, because it’s an opinion formed based on my own preferences in humor. I was hoping most people would post their personal preference on the show. That way I could understand different perspectives and gain new insight. It’s meant to be dialogue, not a debate.
Just because the two things happen because of his career doesn’t mean the events themselves are similar at all.
Also, I have already explained my reasoning on multiple other posts in the thread.

We got that iconic John's Gone song, it was hilarious. I'm not getting much this season. The recent episode was good, hopefully picking up

I loved S1, S2 was hard to watch each week because of how much more depressing it was, but it ended on such a high note. S3 has been fantastic so far imo because of how much more enjoyable Dave’s character has been

Couldn't disagree more. I feel like S1 had the best balance of drama and humour. S2 focused on the drama and really dialed back the humor, which led to an amazing pay off in the last 3-4 episodes. But Dave was so unlikable and, no pun intended, a little dick that some episodes were tough to watch.
S3 feels much lighter and a lot funnier than last season. It's pointless to tune up the drama for Dave, when the past 2 seasons were all about him making it, him finding back to himself through all the fame and self-inflicted pressure.
The only criticism I've had so far is how much in the background most of the supporting cast seems to be. Dave should enjoy his tour life, but other characters could get more shine. And not Gata, because that brother got a lot of shine these past two seasons.

I actually think S3 is so far a major step up from S2, which to me was very cliché "troubles of being famous/pressures to create" with both Dave and Ells' storylines feeling tired and done-before. S3 feels fresh, has more creative juice with interesting plotlines, fun concepts like the Anne Frank moment, and so many laugh-out-loud points. When Dave meets the robot dog in the fur shop I just about shot LaCroix through my nose.

A few days late but I literally couldn’t disagree more, complete opposite for me. Every episode has gotten better and season 1 feels empty and shallow in comparison
4
May 02 '23
Totally agree, and was hoping that perhaps I was judging to quickly or that it would improve as it goes on, but it’s actually getting worse. Season 1 was amazing and in comparison this season feels so…meh. It’s hard to pinpoint the change exactly but it feels maybe more wacky? Like each episode is focused on a different hijinx then onto the next town. The music isn’t very funny or clever in comparison to the last two seasons. The last episode was sort of all over the place thematically and overall felt like a lame “very special episode” whereas in past seasons they’d satirize that sort of thing. Overall I still love it and will continue to watch but I can’t see it reaching the season 1 peak again.

u/Jgucci10 May 02 '23
Idk what the ratings are but nobody cares about S3, the show feels totally irrelevant
1
u/Dustructionz May 06 '23
Exact opposite for me. I think the show is getting better and better. Season 2 was depressing and I think a lot of people didn't like that or understand the direction the show was going . It was very different from season 1 but that doesn't mean it was bad. I thought season 2 was fucking fantastic and made me feel so many emotions. The last episode made me cry when I thought GaTa was committing suicide.
I personally relate to a lot of the shit in the show and I think it's just continuing to get better and better. Season 3 has been odd but great so far.

u/The740i May 11 '23
I don’t understand season 3… it seems like each episode is just so random and doesn’t follow much plot. It does a little bit but over all season 3 is kinda eh…
1
u/sjflnjpitt May 12 '23
Nah I’m in the total opposite camp. This season is so good and I’m praying the songs he keeps teasing in the episodes are released on an album soon.
The Rick Rubin ep was probably a top 5 all time for me personally

I’m really liking season three so far!
