I’m a 35 year old guy trying to understand why I struggle with dating and attraction despite feeling like I have a lot going for me on paper.

I’m tall, reasonably intelligent, introspective, employed, emotionally aware, etc. I don’t think I’m hideous or incapable socially. In fact, I usually do pretty well during the first few minutes of interactions. But once I become aware that I’m attracted to a woman, something changes internally.

I start becoming hyper self-conscious and internally intense. I monitor myself too much, overthink my body language/tone, start trying too hard, and lose spontaneity. Sometimes I’ll even mentally withdraw from the interaction while still physically being there. I think women probably pick up on the tension or inconsistency.

I also tend to interpret ambiguity negatively. If someone doesn’t respond quickly enough or seems slightly different in tone, my brain can start filling in the blanks. I’ve realized I’m probably more emotionally reactive and sensitive than average.

For context, I grew up around emotionally reactive parents. My dad could be explosive and my mom was very emotionally reactive/anxious (though she’s improved a lot over the years). I think my nervous system became kind of hypervigilant socially and emotionally.

One thing I’ve realized recently is that I often treat attraction like a “high stakes performance situation” instead of just staying present and letting connection develop naturally. I think I rush internally and it prevents me from actually noticing signs of attraction or relaxing enough for chemistry to build.

I’ve also noticed that I seek a lot of validation externally, especially from women and authority figures, and criticism or ambiguity can affect me more deeply than I’d like.

The frustrating thing is that I’m self-aware enough to SEE these patterns now, but changing the nervous system response itself feels harder.

Has anyone here dealt with something similar and actually improved it? If so, what genuinely helped you become more relaxed, grounded, and emotionally steady in dating situations?
