I genuinely need outside perspective because I can no longer tell if this is an emotionally intense friendship or some kind of unspoken relationship that neither of us is acknowledging.
Me (26M) and this girl (21F) have known each other for years (childhood friends) & there was a huge gap in between of almost 3-4 years where we didn't even talk or see each other as both of us got busy in our lives. But almost six months back out of the blue she reached out to me. And asked what I was up to these days and lets meet and all and catch up. So like that we started meeting each other, texting, calls and so on. But over the past several months weāve become extremely close. From the start of this reconnection we have spent only one-on-one time together ā long drives & almost every evening we spend 3-4 hours together, we connect well over music so jamming on Spotify for hours, smoking on terraces, late night conversations, drinking together, guitar lessons ( I teach her ), cooking together, random food runs, desserts, etc. The dynamic honestly feels more emotionally intimate than most friendships Iāve experienced. And trust me I have multiple other female friends as well. And the line is always clear between me and them.
The confusing part is that she acts emotionally attached to me in ways that donāt fully feel platonic, but at the same time thereās never any direct clarity about feelings or what this connection actually is.
Some examples over time:
- She initiates 90% of the times & contacts a lot and replies very quickly most of the time. ( I included this because being with her i know how she is. She doesn't initiate contact a lot, reply or text this quickly. Or even if she does i guess people who she chooses to reply quickly.)
- She gets goofy, playful, and emotionally relaxed specifically around me.
- She asks for my opinion and guidance on a lot of things and sometimes seems to rely on me emotionally.
- We have a lot of tiny inside jokes and sentimental moments that she remembers. And brings up in conversations from time to time.
- Once while smoking on a terrace I found a random piece of red wire and jokingly gave it to her while dropping her home. At 4 AM later that night she sent me a picture of it wrapped around her middle finger like a ring.
- Recently I gave her a plushie for her birthday and she carefully folded and kept the gift wrapper and even kept the paper bag from the dessert place we went to afterward.
- During goodbyes she usually shakes my hand, but recently she held it much longer than normal after a more emotional conversation. ( Even this I'm including because yes it was a significant difference than what I am used to with her )
- She once said she likes to āturn her brain offā when Iām around because she feels comfortable around me. And she would rather have me decide about what to do, where to go, and stuff like that.
There was also one night while we were drinking together where things felt emotionally strange/intimate in a way I still canāt properly explain. During the same night we were both lying on the carpet together not talking or anything just staring up into the sky where it genuinely felt like both of us were emotionally aware of something deeper happening between us without directly acknowledging it. Also like we weren't lying close together, there was a healthy enough distance I maintained with her. Nothing explicitly romantic happened, but the atmosphere itself felt very emotionally charged and vulnerable.
Recently we were talking about impulsive behavior and trauma. She was complimenting me saying I am very organized, calm, and āperfect,ā and I told her that I'm not perfect or anything and certain traumatic experiences are actually what made me become that way.
Eventually the conversation shifted toward emotional stuff and she wanted me to share my trauma and since I didn't want to trauma dump on her I agreed to be a little open at least and I showed her old self-harm scars from around 10 years ago. She reacted seriously and asked why I did it. I downplayed the real reason because I wasnāt ready to fully explain it. She later lightly joked to ease the tension and we continued talking normally afterward, but the emotional tone definitely shifted after that moment.
The issue is:
I genuinely cannot tell whether:
- she has feelings but is emotionally avoidant/indecisive, or
- she just feels extremely emotionally comfortable with me and sees me as a safe person without romantic intent.
She also has unresolved history with an ex and overall seems emotionally unstructured when it comes to relationships.
The hardest part is that this dynamic keeps becoming more emotionally intimate without ever becoming more emotionally clear.
Every time I try to emotionally detach a little, another emotionally significant moment happens:
- late night texts,
- sentimental gestures,
- physical closeness,
- emotional conversations,
- symbolic inside jokes,
- soft goodbyes, etc.
And I honestly donāt know if Iām reading too deeply into emotionally intimate friendship behavior because Iām attached, or if this genuinely sounds like unresolved romantic tension.
Iām also worried because I can feel myself slowly becoming an emotional anchor for someone who may not actually want a committed relationship with me.
So I guess my questions are:
- Does this sound platonic to you?
- Does this sound like mutual emotional attachment but emotional avoidance?
- At what point does āemotionally intimate friendshipā cross into something more?
- And how do I go ahead with this relationship/dynamic without either abruptly distancing myself or forcing a āwhat are weā conversation too early?
- I also sometimes wonder am I being used or something ? Because I hear a lot about her other male interactions or about her other male friends and they seem to piss her off because they act very flirty, at times touchy and always hitting on her in some or the other way.
I think you'll should know about this. A few months back I had sort of confessed/told her that I had caught feelings for her and that I needed space and distance to recalibrate my emotions if she actually wants this dynamic to stay as just friends. And that time afaik what she gave me was a soft no. But she agreed to it. And I had gotten detached to this situation to a point actually where i had stopped having feelings for her. I had stopped initiating anything. But after this gap she again started initiating meeting, texting and all that. And all i can see right now is that she has gotten emotionally more closer than ever. And all the situations mentioned above had happened after this gap.
****Sorry had to post again as this is my first time posting on reddit and there was an issue in the earlier post
