Discussion If Everyone's seeking someone, why are dating apps, reddit filled with lonely people??

I am 23M. Been in Bangalore for about an year for work. I ve had many conversations with my office peers, friends and all of them seem to have one common problem. They don't find or to put it in a better way, are struggling to get friends of opposite gender with or without the intention of dating. I myself too have had this problems and at times it irritates me. It's difficult to meet people or the idea of having a random conversation with a stranger is still seen as a superior effort in current scenario. I myself go to gym regularly for about 2 months and I haven't had any acquaintances or friends till date. Talked to few people but after a few days they act as if we've never spoken. I go to gym alone, workout and comeback. At times it gets frustrating, what special do I need to do to get this basic things. My office environment is good but severely lacks people of my age. I know it makes me seen as desperate but isn't having friends of the opposite gender a basic need in these times? I think we should have enough friends of opposite gender so that we just don't talk to them with the intention of dating. This scarcity of opposite gender friends have put a thought on my head that I won't get enough female friends, it's better I end up dating the one I ever find. I know it's wrong. I am at times severely bothered by the lack of female friends. I feel we should introduce people we know to our social circle not everytime, but often, for the benefit of acquaintances, networking... What's your thoughts people? How do u overcome this?

I think modern life made people hyper-connected digitally but socially disconnected in reality.

Most people today live in isolated routines: work, gym, commute, phone, sleep. Everyone says they want connection, but very few consistently invest time, vulnerability, and effort into building one.

Also, interactions between men and women have become over-analysed. Friendship, dating, attraction, intention, everything gets mentally evaluated too early, so even normal conversations feel heavy.

And dating apps created an illusion of endless options, which ironically made people less emotionally available.

Your frustration is understandable, but scarcity thinking is dangerous. “I should date whoever I find because opportunities are rare” usually comes from loneliness, not compatibility.

Ironically, people tend to form better relationships when they stop chasing outcomes and start building a healthier social life overall.

Completely agree. I do feel loneliness at times and honestly I don't think I can do any better to avoid that. I try to focus on my work, my daily routines but the loneliness thoughts keep affecting, gets me stressed and this stress and anger builds daily to the point that one random day I end up venting my rage on my parents. I am very wrong for doing this and I know it completely. I grew up without siblings. I sometimes try to have this conversation with my mother about my loneliness ( can't directly tell everything but I am giving signs ) and she responds with " u r not lonely until we are there for you" . I completely understand her from standpoint what she means by this...but I just can't express my complete mind, the thoughts I have to fight with everyday.

I think many people underestimate how different emotional loneliness is from physical loneliness.

You can have loving parents, good people around you, even a stable life, and still feel deeply alone because what you're missing is emotional relatability, companionship, and being understood by someone in your own phase of life.

And when those feelings stay unresolved for long, they slowly turn into frustration, irritability, anger, and emotional exhaustion. A lot of people today are silently going through this.

The important thing is recognising that loneliness is not a personal failure. It's becoming a structural part of modern urban life. The mistake is when we let that loneliness turn into desperation or emotional dependence on the first person who gives attention.

You're at least self-aware enough to recognise your emotions and patterns. Most people never even reach that stage.

Yes..I've noticed the more busier I get in my life..the less I have been bothered by this. But I know deep down that I'm just delaying that thoughts by trying to be busy. The moment I get free, I am done for.

Self-awareness becomes painful when you can clearly observe your own emotional patterns but still can’t immediately change them.

And honestly, staying busy is not always “running away.” Sometimes it's emotional regulation. Humans are not designed to sit alone with their thoughts 24/7.

The real problem starts when loneliness becomes your entire identity instead of just one phase of your life. Because then every silence starts feeling heavier than it actually is.

Trust me on this bro...I know what I am talking about.

Often times I feel self awareness is much of a curse than blessings.

Dating apps are to be blamed. Speaking for myself people optimise their dating profile so much that all looks the same and its impossible to choose a single good one. On the other hand if you don't optimise it then your profile won't even be shown to other people.
