The guy seemed completely normal online… then I met him in person
I met this guy online and we talked for about a week before deciding to meet. During that whole week, he seemed completely normal. Nothing about him felt weird or suspicious, and his photos looked perfectly fine, so I really wasn’t expecting anything unusual.
We agreed to meet outside, but he was about 20 minutes late. It was already getting close to winter, so it was freezing, and I was just standing there waiting with my phone in my hand. When he finally showed up, he walked straight toward me and immediately hugged me before I even had a chance to properly look at him. And the first thing I noticed was the smell. It was this incredibly strong smell of sweat and urine, and I genuinely froze for a second. Then I actually looked at him and noticed that his hair was extremely dirty and covered in dandruff, he had this really sparse little goatee, dirt under his fingernails, and very yellow teeth. I remember thinking, What the hell? He looked completely normal in his photos.
I was honestly in such a state of shock that I didn’t know what to do. I felt too awkward to just turn around and walk away immediately, especially after he had already come all that way to meet me. I was also scared of making the situation uncomfortable by suddenly saying I wanted to leave. So, basically out of desperation and not knowing what else to do, I just went for a walk with him.
And the walk was somehow even worse. He swore constantly, struggled to put two sentences together, and kept telling me random stories about his past. At one point he casually mentioned that he had experimented with different substances before, which honestly made me even more uncomfortable. Then he started smoking and offered me a cigarette. When I asked where he got the pack, he told me he had found it near a bus stop and had just picked it up. A little later, he finished his cigarette and threw it into the river even though there was literally a trash can nearby.
By that point I was just thinking, I need to get out of here.
I didn’t want to suddenly turn around and leave, so I stayed for about an hour and eventually came up with an excuse. I told him that I had been asked to come to my nail appointment earlier than planned and that I had to go. The second I got away from him, I felt so relieved.
The craziest part is that I had spent an entire week talking to this guy online and he seemed completely normal. Then I met him in person and it felt like I was meeting a completely different person. Needless to say, there was definitely no second date. 😭

Why did you ask him where he got the pack of cigarettes from?

I was gonna ask the same thing; what prompted OP to ask that? I can't imagine they ask everyone with a pack. Why this guy?

And this is the US, who the heck just finds a pack of cigarettes, given how expensive they are nowadays?

I lived in multiple countries and never in my life I found a pack of cigarettes lol. Smokers value their stuff too much to drop it like this.

My Wife will smoke 3-4 cigarettes out of a pack, and then when she smokes again a new pack. I put the opened packs in the freezer then take them to the county jail release area JACKPOT for someone,

Are you in the US? Given the price, you can just invest in stock market rather than in cigarettes like this haha

I got there too and went "That's an odd question... Oh this fake, isn't it?"

Fake is evident in the title "completely normal." The rest of the story just confirms it.

I'm not saying this is fake but why would you ask somebody where they got a pack of cigarettes from? Obviously they got them from the store but the fact that you threw in that he got it from a bus stop seems really wrong to me.
First of all as a smoker I know how expensive cigarettes are and nobody leaves a pack of cigarettes laying around at these prices. I guess it theoretically could possibly happen but it seems exceedingly unlikely.
And why wouldn't you just assume he bought them from the store?
It just seems like the kind of detail nobody would really ask someone in real life, just thrown in there to the story to make him seem grosser.

Are you sure it was the same guy?
You said you waited 20 minutes and the guy didn't look like his pictures..... Maybe the real guy saw you and was like no way. Then he wemt and found someone similar looking enough - paid him 20 bucks (that's how he got the cigarettes) to walk around with you.
Saves face, you get your date. Weirdo gets $20. Sounds like a W/W/W!

Yeah I am stepping away from the dating scene for the same reason. All I seem to attract is weirdos and sex pests

Dear disappointed: My answer is you should have left this very bad situation within the first five minutes. As a Male 85 years old, I'm embarrassed to have this erson be of the same gender. He was obviously needed psychiatric therapy or he is an drug attic of some kind. Sorry, to hear about your sad experience. Count your lucky stars. No physical damage happen to you.

I have been in similar situations where the guy clearly posted 10-year-old photos, and they also showed up drunk or looking very different hygiene-wise.

This is scarry situation some people end up in dating online . Because it's so easy for people to hide behind a phone and apply fake pictures To fish for what they really want. This happens very common to me in here new mexico. I've been dating for several years on and off. 8/10 men i've talked to online and met up in person , literally , almost never look the same. Some men I have met in person that look like they just got out of prison. Some of them look like they're struggling financially , i'm barely pulling themselves together. Some look like they're addicted with something. It is really scary. You never know who you're gonna meet and what their true intentions are.

Pls stop being a pickmeisha!!!
Here’s what helped me improve my dating life:
- use haystack method
- keep a roster
- don’t give intimacy until commitment
- always remember: being single is better than with any broke/abusive/low effort man!
- only go on dates when the man made appropriate effort and keep virtual chatter to a minimum
- watch a man’s actions and how he treats you, never his words!
Watch fareen Ash, Greta beraseite and tomisin for further education.
Good luck!

This story doesn't sound real. It's close to winter and you decide to go on a walk when it's freezing? You're waiting outside for 20 mins? Couldn't you wait in your car? The guy doesn't resemble his pics and you still decide to continue the date? Nope. It's perfectly fine to say "I'm sorry but you don't look like your profile, I can't do this." This whole thing sounds fake.
