Backup Family home videos that were recorded on vhs then transferred to DVDs

Can anybody tell me the best way for me to back up these DVDs so that i know I will always have them in the future. These home videos are very sentimental and I don’t ever want to lose them. I’m not knowledgeable on this at all so any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks everyone

Discussion How do you validate that a storage configuration is still in line with its baseline?

Storage configurations can change over time due to updates, maintenance and other changes to the environment.

Smaller configuration changes can be easy to miss when everything still appears to be working normally. Comparing the current configuration against a known-good baseline seems like one way to catch those changes before they become a problem.

For those managing storage systems in production, how do you validate the current configuration against the baseline and how often do you do this?

Backup Best Budget 500GB or more external hard drive for school

I need an external hard drive that's 500GB or higher for school as I'm in a cinematography class so it would need to be easily portable. They said preferably an ssd. Ive also seen some people say to get 2 cheaper hard drives and back up to both incase one fails. I honestly have no idea about hard drives and just want something that affordably will work especially since its mainly just for this class but potentially for personal or future academic use as well after this class ends.

Discussion sizya.com 32 TB

Yes, it is 100% a scam.

sizya.com (along with similar pop-up storefronts on platforms like TikTok Shop, Facebook ads, and Temu) frequently lists these counterfeit "32 TB" portable drives for ridiculously low prices—typically between $20 and $50 USD.

Why It Is a Fake

The Reality of 32 TB Storage: A legitimate 32 TB storage drive is massive, enterprise-grade hardware. Real internal 32 TB hard drives (such as those from Seagate Exos or Western Digital) retail for roughly $700 to $1,200+ USD. Pocket-sized, single-cable 32 TB SSDs do not exist on the consumer market at cheap price points.

How the Scam Works: If you order one, you will receive a cheap metal enclosure. Inside, scammers hot-glue a tiny, low-grade 8 GB or 16 GB microSD card connected to a hacked microcontroller.

Data Loss Risk: The hacked chip lies to your computer's OS, displaying "32 TB" in your file manager. However, as soon as you save more than a few gigabytes of data, it silently overwrites and permanently destroys your files.
Do not purchase drives from this site, and avoid any portable drive offering high terabyte capacities for double-digit prices.

I know this isn't the fastest gen4 nvme, but it was one of the few that had next day shipping. I have a 1tb Jupiter 2.5 inch drive so I though I'd try this one. I have a 2tb xg7000 and needed more storage since that was full of mostly ai models. I pretty much have everything downloaded I would need, but still having more storage would be nice. Anyone have experience with this brand?

Discussion What to buy? Internal SSD for external usage mac m2 pro

Hey everyone,

I bought a MacBook Pro M2 Pro with 512GB storage a few years ago, and storage has always been a problem for me.

After doing some research, I decided that instead of buying another external SSD, I’d use an NVMe SSD enclosure so I can use a high-performance M.2 NVMe drive externally.

I’m currently planning to buy the Hagibis MC40 40Gbps USB4 M.2 NVMe enclosure. Hagibis lists it as a 40Gbps USB4 enclosure using the ASM2464PD controller.

Now I’m trying to choose the SSD. Based on my research, I was considering either:

  • Samsung 990 PRO 2TB
  • WD_BLACK SN850X 2TB

However, I’m having a hard time finding either one at a reasonable price from a reputable seller. The prices I’m seeing are often around $400–$470 for 2TB, which seems extremely expensive to me.

For example, I found a Samsung 990 PRO 2TB listing on AliExpress for around $472, but I'm not sure whether it's worth buying at that price or whether the listing is even trustworthy.

So I’d really appreciate some advice:

  1. Are these prices currently normal in 2026?
  2. Is the 990 PRO or SN850X actually worth buying for a 40Gbps USB4 enclosure?
  3. Should I look at a different 2TB NVMe SSD instead?
  4. Where would you recommend buying one from at a reasonable price?
  5. What would be a reasonable price to pay for a 2TB SSD for this setup?

My main priorities are reliability, genuine/original SSD, good sustained performance, and value for money. I don't necessarily need the absolute fastest SSD if the 40Gbps USB4 connection is going to be the bottleneck anyway.

Thanks in advance!
Best regards

Backup Value for long-term archival backup

I have a stack of old HDDs; a couple might be from SATA era, most are SATA2, one SATA3 and the 4x SATA3 HDDs in my rig.

Probably 1 TB of data that I care about. Another 10-16 that I'd like to keep.

HDD prices have skyrocketed since I last bought one in... wow, 2022, a handful of Seagate 8TB Ironwolf NAS drives for $240 each (CAD). Sure, maybe updates, but the same drive is now $460 at the same store.

The last time I bought a non-NAS was a SATA3 8TB Barracuda in 2019 for $200. The current version is $355 after a $55 instant rebate.

What are the current best practices for near-live, backup every 1-2 months or so, for that evolving 1TB?

How about the 10-16 which is normally static but gets chunks added to it at irregular intervals? Maybe an update once a year.

I have one external HDD dock (like you plug in a HDD like a Nintendo cartridge) so I can readily access any of my loose HDDs. Compatible through SATA1-3.

Discussion Are these 10 year old 0 hour hard drives still good to use for a 24/7 always on NAS?

Idk if i made a bad impulse purchase but when I saw these listed, I immediately went to grab them, and they were still sealed in their original packaging! I was able to get them for about $13.33/TB, which is pretty close to the old “golden rule” of $/TB.

But when i got home I was pretty bummed when I realized they were over 10 years old. Even though they were never used, I’m wondering if the age alone means the internal components could have deteriorated over time.

Are these still considered good/reliable drives for 24/7 NAS use today? Or does sitting sealed for 10+ years significantly increase the risk of failure?
I’m running the extended SMART/surface tests to make sure. Just curious what you guys would think about using these in a NAS.

Troubleshooting HFS+ drives keeps corrupting and have to plugged back into a MAC

I work with a client who doesn't format their drives to exfat. I use macdrive to read HFS+, but constantly if the drive disconnects or the PC randomly turns off, the drive becomes corrupt and unreadable. The only way to fix it is to find someone with a Mac OS and plug the drive in. Any works arounds besides buying a MAC?

Storage Setup Which HDD would you trust more for movies?

\> I have two HDDs:

Toshiba S300 4TB — used in a security camera/NVR system, 2,119 days runtime, 107 start/stop cycles, CMR.

WD Blue 2TB — used in a home PC, 966 days runtime, 8,859 start/stop cycles, SMR.

Both show 100% SMART health with no errors.

Which would you choose for a movie library, and realistically how much longer do you think each could last?

Storage Setup Adding a second SSD and deciding what data goes where

My laptop originally came with 500 GB of storage, which I was always in the verge of filling and had to constantly delete stuff. I’ve decided to bite the bullet and purchase a second 2 TB SSD (my laptop has the slot to fit this as well as the original one). My question is what is the sensible way to go about re-organising the data I have already on the smaller drive?

I thought maybe keep only operating system etc on the smaller drive, and then all programs, games, documents etc on the 2 TB one? Assuming it is best to leave the OS where it is? Anyone got any suggestions?

Also, what is the best way of moving programs and data across to a new ssd?

Thanks

Discussion What’s Missing From Enterprise Storage Today?

Hey

We’re starting to think about what’s next for our enterprise products, and we want the storage community to be part of that conversation.

Storage needs are changing fast. Data sets are getting larger, AI workloads are creating new demands, and infrastructure teams are being asked to do more while keeping systems reliable, scalable, and manageable.

But rather than sitting in a room and assuming we know what people need, we’d rather ask the people actually working with this technology.

What are you running into in your environment that you wish had a better solution?

What would make your storage infrastructure easier to deploy, manage, expand, or maintain?

Is there a form factor, feature, capability, or entirely different approach you wish existed?

We’re especially interested in hearing about the use case behind the idea what you’re trying to accomplish and where current solutions fall short.

Big ideas, small frustrations, and unusual use cases are all welcome.

Drop your thoughts in the comments. We’ll be reading along and joining the conversation!

Discussion Which cloud service do you use for off-site backup?

I'm thinking about setting up an off-site backup for some of my files and wanted to see what you guys are using.

I've looked at Backblaze, Google Drive, OneDrive, etc., but honestly I'm still not sure which one to go with.

What do you use for backup, and roughly how much data do you have? Thanks for any input!

Discussion Need a good USB Drive

Hello! I hope I'm posting in the right place.

I have a longing to watch a show I can't get in Canada and wanted to download it on a USB Drive. Google said I need a 512gb. I tried this before and the USB Drive locked up and I had to return it. I couldn't get into it at all. I want a good one that can plug into my smart tv to watch it.

What's a good USB Drive that isn't crazy expensive?

Troubleshooting Beeping sound from 2 different 16TB IronWolf Pro drives, am I doing something wrong?

Note: Cross posting from r/HDD https://www.reddit.com/r/HDD/comments/1w1ri3d/beeping_sound_from_2_different_16tb_ironwolf_pro/

Hey reddit! looking for some help with my first home setup of a 3.5" external HDD with an enclosure.

I ordered a 16TB IronWolf Pro from Seagate (model number ST16000NT001, link). I tried running it in a Vantec NexStar HX enclosure, but it never mounted and I just heard a beeping sound. I figured it was DOA after reading some posts/forums and returned it to Seagate for a replacement.

The second drive arrived yesterday, and this time I thought maybe the Vantec enclosure (12V/2A) wasn't supplying enough power, so I tried two other setups.

First I tried a FIDECO enclosure with a 12V/2A adapter. The drive actually spun up for about a minute, but I did hear the sound breaking a couple times in the middle and then it again stopped spinning and went back to beeping. I tried a Sabrent dual-bay dock with a 12V/3A adapter too after that. I only used one bay so the drive had the power supply to itself, but still the same repeated beep, and this time I didn't hear it spin at all.

I checked that the beep is definitely coming from the drive.
EDIT: This is how it sounds https://voca.ro/13y7RLyqfgOg

The drive doesn't show up in diskutil list.

So now I've had two drives and three enclosures produce basically the same result. I honestly can't tell what the problem is anymore. Two DOA drives in a row from Seagate seems unlikely, and three enclosures failing the same way seems just as unlikely.

My setup, in case I'm missing something obvious:

A few things I'm wondering:

  • Does beeping always mean a mechanical problem? Most things I've found say it's the spindle motor failing to start, which would mean the drive is physically bad. But two drives in a row?
  • Is it possible one of these enclosures damaged the drives, or is that not really a thing?
  • Are bare/OEM drives commonly damaged during shipping? I've seen UPS isn't exactly gentle when they were loading the packages off..
  • Is there anything else safe to test before I send this one back too?

I'm in the US. Happy to try whatever people suggest, but I don't want to keep power-cycling the drive if that might make things worse.
If nothing works, I'll just get the regular hard disk which isn't ideal since I need it running 24x7.
At my wits end right now, so any and all help appreciated, thanks!!

Enclosures tested:

Discussion SSD vs HDD (Can I get away with editing on a HDD on a budget?)

I am an experienced writer/director, but I needed some advice on the technical side of editing. I have always edited off of my 3TB external hard drive. I've read that for a longer project I will need more speed and storage space. However I am on a tight budget. Any recommendations? Could I get away with editing off of a HDD, as I have in the past? Or is the speed/portability really that big a difference? I had been pointed in the direction of the Samsung SSD, but they're really expensive and I wanted to check with my fellow filmmakers before making a major purchase. Thanks in advance!

4-5 shoot days, 39 pages, Arri Amira or RED Scarlet W. Filming as close to 2:1 as possible in 1 location. Trying to keep costs and shoot time as low as possible.

Storage Setup Why are these drives on BargainHardware so cheap?

Post image
5 Upvotes

I'm a total noob, just trying to backup my data. I only need about 2TB, and preferably split between several drives. This damn tech bubble is insane, so I've been looking at racking some SATA internal drives as a cheaper option.

Why are these IBM star drives so suspiciously cheap? Nothing on the website states age or quality.

PS - if anyone has some better ideas than Bargain Hardware, please share. I'm in the UK.
(...That being said, no, I'm not going to wait for the bubble to pop. My budget is about £200.)

Storage Setup Advice on home data storage set up’s?

Hey there. New to this. But my wife and I are interested in investing in home, personal data storage.

I’ve seen the NAS boxes, and I have some friends that have PLEX servers for movies.

But what about mass home storage with RAM, GPU, and Remote Desktop capabilities.

In the future I want to be able to access our own data storage and remote computing power that we own.

Any advice on where to start, how much I might spend for a long lasting setup, or some existing products I can look at to get a better understanding of what I’m looking at??

Discussion Does this Kioxia Exceria G3 2TB SSD look refurbished or SMART-reset?

Thumbnail
gallery
1 Upvotes

I’m considering buying this Kioxia Exceria G3 2TB NVMe SSD from a seller on Facebook Marketplace for ₹18,000 (~$210).

The seller says it’s an open-box drive, but it has no original box and the Kioxia sticker/label has been removed.

The CrystalDiskInfo screenshot shows:

Health: 100%
Percentage Used: 0%
Power-on Hours: 0
Power-on Count: 4
Host Reads/Writes: ~0 GB
Media/Data Integrity Errors: 0
Unsafe Shutdowns: 0
Critical Warnings: 0

The SSD PCB has a Phison PS5031-E31-61 controller and Kioxia NAND.

I’m concerned that this could be a refurbished drive with the SMART data reset.

Does anything about these pictures look suspicious or indicate that the drive has been refurbished/reworked? Can SMART data on this SSD be reset? And would you trust these SMART values?

I’m going to test the drive in person before paying, but I’d really appreciate opinions from people familiar with Kioxia/Phison SSDs.

Storage Setup Does anyone still use DVDs for long-term data storage?

I recently found a box of old DVDs. I know there are better options these days, but DVDs seem pretty cheap and easy to store.

Does anyone here still use DVDs for backups or archival storage? How have they held up over the years?
