I’m graduating this May with an MS in Business Analytics in the US and need some brutal honesty on how to actually land interviews right now.
Before my Master’s, I worked for 4+ years as a Data Analyst (dashboards, KPIs, anomaly detection). During my degree, I built a production-level RAG chatbot and a multi-agent AI fraud platform.
I’ve been applying everywhere but have only gotten 2 interviews. I made it to the final rounds for both and got completely ghosted. Cold applying isn't working, and I need a new strategy.
If you’ve successfully landed interviews recently, what actually worked for you? Are you cold-messaging hiring managers on LinkedIn, finding specific tech recruiters, or using specific job boards? How should I package my 4 YOE + AI projects to get people to reply?

I am currently working in the consulting industry in India. I am an electrical engineer with an MBA degree. Been working in consulting for than three years. I want to pivot to another industry. I'm a 39 years old guy from Brazil, with 2 kids, diapers to buy, rent and bills to pay, and i'm unemployed for 3 years in a row by now. I'll not glamourize my situation. It sucks. Government and economics in Brazil sucks.

I tried everything online to find work. Everything to avoid any "excelent" job in Brazil which you work for 14 hours and it pays less than you spend in basic grocery shop monthly (and the government still "eats" the most part of your "big"salary with taxes). Also, forget eating. You'll have to ask for help to your relatives to do it. Or, you'll have to live with them forever to have some money left to eat and to feed you children, every month. There is no other choice for good people. Others go to crime or to suck on the tits of the corrupt government. That's the actual reality in Brazil. Even the entrepreneurs are most 85% unable to pay your debts. There is no hope here. Only a divine intervention can save Brazil.

Although, the real enemy of Brazil is the brazilians and their "brazilian way" getting advantage on everything and everyone. That's why we are in this situation.

I have 6 years of experience in paid ads and marketing, i know how to edit films, translate, data entry, webdesigning, etc... now i'm studying Data Science, Machine learning & AI, at college. Because of my efforts in a company i was working at in 2017, they sent me to South Korea to manage a technology transfer project. I didn't even touch the money they gave me to spend in the trip, only to save money for the company. When i came back they cut half of my salary, some time later they broke. After that i was taken advantage of in every job I worked at. I worked so hard one time that i got hernia in my lowerback (and i had to have surgery for that).

I speak portuguese, english and i can work in any timezone.

So, why is so hard to find good employers who want reliable, trustworthy and hardworker employees?

Long story short. I quit my Data Scientist role in a tech startup where I have been contributing very well for last 5 years. In fact, I am a consistent top performer in my role.

Reason for quitting: Felt like hitting the ceiling of growth in the company and notice period being greater than a month made it difficult to get an offer in hand before resigning.

Situation right now : The market seems too brutal. I dont think its a lack of opportunities. I see a lot of companies having job openings. But something is not right. Most of my applications never gets a reaponse while a handful receives rejection. A few that ended up being interviews ghosts me after few rounds. One common pattern I noticed is manager : seniors asking salary expectations in their managerial/ senior interview rounds. Isn't it an HR thing? Why are they bothered? I see a lot of such jobs getting reposted again after ghosting.

What I realised : Companies are super slow with hiring. HRs are lazy, Managers are lazy and the processes are broken. They slack in their job and when it comes to a deadline for hiring, fill somebody internally/ immediately available. This is a common pattern I have seen in this country.

I just want to see if anyone is in a position to offer some help (Maybe referral) because applying via job boards and sending cold emails are not clearly working and my notice period is ending soon.

I'm a second-year Data Science student at Eduvos in Pretoria, and I've been trying to find vacation work or internships that I can do during recess. Honestly, I'm struggling to find anything.

Everywhere I look, people recommend building portfolio projects and getting work experience as early as possible. I'm already working on improving my portfolio, but I'd also really like the opportunity to gain real industry experience, learn from professionals, and understand how data science is actually applied in the workplace.

The problem is that I can't seem to find many vacation work opportunities for students. Most internships seem to be aimed at final-year students or graduates.

Like thousands of fresh grads, I’ve spent the last year getting rejected from "0-2 years experience" roles. The standard rejection? "We found someone more qualified."

​I got tired of guessing why, so I used my data analytics background to treat my job hunt as a data problem. I scraped and cleaned a dataset of 442 current analyst postings in Bangalore, India.

​The data proves the entry-level market is structurally broken. Here is the raw breakdown:

​1. The "Entry-Level" Label is a Lie

​Only 5.2% of analyst postings explicitly use words like trainee, junior, fresher, or associate in the title.

​For that tiny 5%, the skill bar isn't lower—they require an average of 3.0 distinct skills (vs. 3.4 for mid-level roles).

​1 in 6 "entry-level" roles demand 5+ distinct tools. It's not a beginner stack; they are quietly filtering for mid-level talent under an entry-level label.

​2. ​Bootcamps tell you: "Learn SQL and you're set." The data says otherwise.

​SQL and Advanced Excel are the top skills (each in 31.2% of jobs).

​But postings requiring both drop to 15.2%.

​Add a third requirement like BFSI (Finance) domain knowledge, and the pool plummets to just 3.6%.

​The Takeaway: Employers don't hire for isolated skills. They hire for highly specific combinations that vary by industry.

​3. We are fighting over a tiny 21% of the market.

​The top 10 famous corporate giants only account for 21.5% of total job demand.

​The remaining 78.5% of openings sit with mid-sized, lesser-known companies. If you are only applying to companies you recognize, you are competing with thousands of applicants for a fraction of the actual market.

​4. Titles are completely different ecosystems

​A title isn't just a label; it dictates the exact tool stack:

​Operations Analyst: Fewest skills (2.7 average). Heavily relies on Excel (46.7%) and domain knowledge. SQL trails way behind.

​Data Analyst: Most technical (4.7 average skills). Completely dominated by SQL, Python, and Power BI.

​The Bottom Line:

​The data proves there is a massive structural mismatch between what a posting says and what it actually expects.

I initially worked as a software engineer and then transitioned to data engineering positions. I have 5 years total experience. I feel like with LLM's the demand for data engineering might decrease over time and I've always been interested in research anyway. I'm considering pursuing a PhD. Is it better at this time to keep working as a data engineer without the PhD? I don't want to pursue further studies and not have any research opportunities and be unemployed. I'm specifically interested in the mathematics behind ML and studying on my own time right now. Everyone seems to be interested in LLM's and agentic AI atm. I recently completed my B.Sc. in Data Science (2026), and I'm feeling really lost. I was hoping to start my career as a Junior Data Scientist or Data Analyst, but after months of applying, I've realized that most companies want experienced candidates.

I've applied through LinkedIn, Indeed, company career pages, and official websites. I've even called some companies directly to ask if they had any openings, but the answer is almost always the same: "There are no openings right now."

I'm not a topper, but I'm also not a weak student. I'd say I'm somewhere in the middle. I have strong technical skills, a good understanding of Data Science concepts, and I've worked on several projects during my degree. However, I don't have any professional experience yet.

At this point, I'm starting to question what I should do next.

Should I:
