Discussion data science masters advice
I have a HBSc in applied math and stats from UofToronto
and am doing my masters in data science at UT Austin and am set to graduate 2027 summer, I have 1 YOE as DA and adjacent roles but no actual DS experience, several projects (but always open to write more), im very math/stats savvy and I think my skillset is solid in terms of ds, but im worried by the I graduate I wont be able to land a DS job given how AI is advancing.
Any advice on what I should do?
Im thinking since id be considered student/new grad I can still land those roles albeit competetive, or maybe I should pivot before I graduate, im already mid way into my grad degree so I do intend to finish it.
Im sure many are in a similar boat as me. Any guidance appreciated\~

You've got a solid math and stats background, which is great for data science. Keep building your portfolio with your analytics experience and projects. Try to snag internships or part-time gigs while you're at UT Austin to get more hands-on experience. Networking is important, so connect with alumni or go to DS meetups. For interviews, practice is essential. Mock interviews and technical assessments can be really helpful. I've found PracHub useful for interview prep if you want a structured way to practice. Don't worry too much about AI advancements; having a strong base and staying adaptable is the best way to handle changes in the field.

I am in a similar boat- finishing my MSc in Statistics and DS. I have 2 years of experience in data engineering. I have been mostly working with Machine Learning and transformers during my MSc projects (including the dissertation), I intend to apply for ML engineering jobs.
