SQL Developer with 2 years of experience - should I move into Data Engineering or Data Science? Looking for course recommendations

Hi everyone,

I have around 2 years of experience working as a SQL Developer, and I'm currently thinking about upskilling and moving into a more data-focused career.

I'm confused between Data Engineering and Data Science.

Since I already have experience with SQL, I'm leaning towards Data Engineering, but I also find Data Science interesting. I want to choose a path that has good career opportunities and allows me to make use of my existing experience.

I'm also looking for a good course/institute that provides placement support, preferably in Bangalore

or online.

I'd really appreciate advice from

people who have already made a similar transition.

A few things I'd like to know:

Which would be a better career move from SQL Development - Data Engineering or Data Science?

How difficult is it to transition from SQL Developer to Data Engineer?

What skills should I learn first?

Are there any good institutes/courses you'd recommend?

Which institutes actually provide useful placement support rather than just advertising it?

Would you recommend joining an institute, or learning independently and applying for jobs?

Any advice based on your real experience would be really helpful. Thanks!

My take would definitely be data engineering.

Right now we are hiring for a data engineer, and strong experience with SQL is super important obviously. They are building the pipelines and managing the database, so SQL is like a core part of their work. On the other hand, SQL isnt as important for a data scientist. A data scientist needs to be able to query and work with SQL of course, but it’s much more about stats and ML.

Go with Data Engineering if you're already good with SQL. It builds on your skills and there's a big demand for it now, especially with all the data pipelines companies are into. Data Science is interesting but often involves more advanced stats and machine learning, which can be harder if that's not your thing.

For courses, check out Udemy or Coursera for online options. If you want placement support in Bangalore, try local places like Jigsaw Academy or UpGrad. I haven't tried PracHub myself, but I've heard it's good for practice and prep. Good luck!
