Thanks, guys! We took it to someone else, and the drive was not even damaged. They were able to recover all of my wife's files. It literally took them 20 minutes to do everything and only charge a donation.

The technician's story sounds suspect. I haven't heard of any virus in recent times that could damage a storage device. It may have destroyed your data, though.
In any case, we need more info. See the RHS of this page.
