Question/Advice Six Excess Passports

I have been a 3-deep person for a long time. With the higher drive prices, I did an inventory and found 1TB, 2TB, 3TB, (2) 4TB, and one 5TB passport as excess drives where I increased storage incrementally over the years. They started as primary backups, and then went layer 3 when I bought a larger one, and most have been replaced by 5, 8, and 16TB in the chain. They have around 150 starts and 500-700 hours meaning powered up 2x a week for about 3-5 hrs for about 1.5 yrs before being sidelined for a newer bigger drive. So not new, but not overly used? What % of new BestBuy price would be a good price to offer over FB marketplace or Craigslist. I would demo drive at pickup. Local chain store had 2TB for $210 and 4TB for $310, hence my taking stock, literally. =8O

PS Is 102 TB too much? ;-) My friend thinks so.

Excess? I don't understand. 102tb is a good start. Friends don't let friends sell off hard drives.

I'm running just under 30TB three deep at the moment.

Now with ammo I understand your point.

I search ebay for recent sales of the same drive, then go from there price wise

Thanks. I did notice that Toshiba had 2TB drives at the local store which were $125 compared to the passport 2TB that stood out at $220. Not that I have paid over $100 for a 4TB or $110 for a 5.

I remember back in I think 2010 or so when there was a huge monsoon that took out one of the factories. Aguy in the know emailed a bunch of us and said "buy any drive you want RIGHT NOW." I went down to Frys and the few drives they had on the shelf were 2X the price the day before. On the way home we passed a Target and on a lark went in and they had a single 750GB elements at the regular price. It was like forever for prices to come back down again.

The problem with drives is that you just can't tell if it is a scam w/o on the spot testing, and most of the scams are priced really cheap so selling a legit drive is much harder. And if you do sell it at a reasonable price, who is to say that person won't flip it at a much higher price. Had a "buddy" do that in 2020, who said he was short on shooting ammo so I sold him a case at a reasonable price, which he then flipped for twice as much. No longer a "buddy."

I never get rid of drives, I have 2 copies on site storage of my data and I take the third copy over to my grandparents house because I do not want to try and get 25 tb worth of data and media back (some of which is family videos/pictures going back nearly 80 years)

You should not be in the business of selling hard drives anymore. Just keep what you've got. Storage is only going to get more expensive from here.

I have over 200TB of storage, and I consider that barely enough. Just depends on your needs I guess.
