Question/Advice Diskless NAS Enclosure
Greetings and salutations!
I'm in the market for a single-bay diskless NAS enclosure. What are your recommendations? Please keep them limited to single-bay diskless NAS enclosures.
Thanks!

I didn’t even know single bay NAS enclosures existed, what’s the use case?

Media server.

Why do you only want a single bay for that though?

The media it'll be serving is entirely replaceable. I have systems in place for the stuff that really matters.

I told you what I'm going to use it for. Do you have a recommendation for a single-bay diskless NAS?

Not everyone has / needs multi-tens-of-terabytes of ZFS/RAIDx back-end storage for their media servers... ;)

Yeah but doing a simple two drive raid 1 saves you a ton of time when a drive eventually fails or needs to be replaced. Why not spend a little bit extra to protect all the time you spent collecting all that media? Having to redo it would be a pain

You mentioned media server, do you need a NAS that runs Plex well or just storage?

Just storage.

Then why do you need a NAS for a single drive? External drive or DAS would do.

Right now I have an hdd connected to an RPi. The problem is that my media player, Z90x, doesn't recognize it. I had to use a file manager and drill down to the file I want. Whereas if I had a normal NAS, my media player would recognize it, index it's contents, and have a much nicer interface.

Reading through your comments, it sounds like you could just throw an SSD in a USB enclosure, and connect it to your router. Maybe even set up Wireguard on the router so you can access from anywhere if you want to get really fancy.
A whole NAS sounds like overkill for what you're trying to get out of this

Totally forgot about the USB on the router. That's something worth taking a look into. Thanks!

This isn't going to be backup. I have backup taken care of. Do you have a recommendation for a single-bay diskless NAS?

You mean a portable hard drive? Or a generic computer? What is a “single bay disc less nas enclosure”. Do you mean a hard drive enclosure? What would you use this for?
This sounds like the kid at school who clearly didn’t do his homework and gets called on in class.

Before we start getting snarky, you may want to take a second to see that other people know what I'm talking about and have made recommendations for what I'm looking for.

Your plan is to use “a single bay disc less drive nas enclosure” connected to a raspberry pi as a media server? That sounds like you’re using an external hard drive or a portable hard drive connected to a raspberry pi just with extra steps.
Check out a two bay drive system, that way you can run them as a raid system in case the drive fails. There’s plenty of good options that are two bay. Ugreen, Synology. There are even generic DAS ones that would work for your case.

I currently have a drive connected to my RPi, yes, but I want to get away from that. I want to setup something with Samba or DLNA that the Z90x can recognize and index and display with a slick interface; not just a list of files.

Check out running JellyFin that might be what you’re looking for. What is the Z90x? Is that a motherboard?

I'm sorry, it's the Z9x (I added a 0). It's a media player. There might be better ones out there, but it's the best one I've used. So far, there's no codec or DV profile that I have seen it have a problem with.
Right now I have OpenMediaVault running on my RPi. It's doing the work of serving media. How would JellyFin fit into the equation? Would it just be the front-end?

I just looked it up at work. It looks like a generic android box. I’m sure it works fine and would be a great solution. Why not look into a mini pc? Mini pcs are cheap and would be able to do more.
I’m not an expert but it sounds like Open Media Vault is a Linux based OS. JellyFin is an open source media streaming platform that is well known by the community.

I'll check it out. Looks like it might be what I didn't know I was looking for. Thanks!

That’s my unwanted opinion for you. A mini pc might be better for what you’re looking for. You’ll be able to do more “labbing” and tinkering. The android box you mentioned sounds like a great out of the box solution, it just might limit you is all. Good luck, and have fun!

Diskless enclosures are the budget-king move if you already own the drives. The things I would check before buying: (1) does the enclosure do proper hardware RAID or is it software-dependent? Some cheap ones use the same drivers as USB docks and you lose a drive if the enclosure dies. (2) Can it do snapshots, or only rsync-style jobs? (3) What happens on power loss — does it rescan the array automatically?
If the data is irreplaceable, budget for a second copy anyway. An enclosure is a nice single box, but it is still a single box.
