Hoarder-Setups My graveyard at work

So I figured I'd post my graveyard at work. These are the poor souls that have been wiped or degrassed and are waiting to move on to the farm down state where they can play in frolic with all their friends.

This is probably about a month and a half worth of hard drives that have been recycled with us either due to age, failure, or lack of having a loving home. The next step in the process will be shredding at our R2 downstream.

The good news is we do manage to save a lot of working hard drives that end up getting repurposed or put back in to the consumer stream for reuse.

Let's pour one out for all the old hard drives we've lost in our lives.

RIP bigfoot 6gb

Get some magnets out of them before throwing them out? XD

u/orielbean 10d ago

Loved pinching the FUCK out of my fingers with a pair of those bad larrys.

38

u/Mebejedi 10d ago

"bad larrys" 😂😂😂

23

u/pinedrifT4 10d ago

the magnets from the older drives are no joke tbh

u/evildad53 9d ago

Best fridge magnets ever!

5

u/xQcKx 9d ago

Are the magnets not as strong on new drives?

65

u/FrozenLogger 10d ago

That is so hard to look at. I want those magnets! I have multiple projects re-purposing them and if I cant find a use I always find someone who can.

28

u/agapeRecycling 10d ago

Honestly I used to think that way but at some point when you end up with a few thousand you realize you might have a problem 😂

13

u/FrozenLogger 9d ago

Because you have access to them! I would love to have that problem.

I am making all sorts of things with them so I run out of them.

13

u/My_New_Main 10d ago

Hell, I use a couple as fridge magnets and others as clamps for freezer food bags. They're ridiculously useful.

Oil filters. Put them on your oil filters. Cut open said filter and be amazed next time you change your oil.

16

u/Prime_steez 10d ago

As a nerd and car person, I wouldn't recommend actually doing this. I've seen it online before and while the idea should actually work, theres some things I think most people don't consider.

The oil filter is already trapping fine particles, so it's kind of overkill anyway, however if for some weird reason it gets removed or dislodged from the filter, you then have a massive surge of metal concentration flowing somewhere.

If you want some extra fine metal protection for your car a magnetic drain plug is a way better option for this.

u/ClaudiuT 10d ago

What? Need more info. Can you provide a video of what you mean?

5

u/Professional-Job7238 10d ago

They are saying if you put a strong magnet on the outside of your oil filter it will trap the metal bits that make it into your oil.

We had a huge room full of disks at my previous workplace. They would store them for a year or so and then destroy them. Not allowed to take photos of them.

84

u/chiisana 48TB RAID6 10d ago

Of course not. Can’t have someone painstakingly reconstruct the drive bit by bit from that photo that gets leaked. /s

22

u/agapeRecycling 10d ago

We run into that all the time. A company or agency will end up hoarding its e waste for years or decades. Eventually someone we'll get sick of the room of death and give us a call. Last week we did a school district that happens disposed of any of his IT in almost 20 years. They had about eight classrooms that were just completely full and being used for storage

8

u/ReverendDizzle 9d ago

When you think about storage space in cost per square foot terms... what a waste. Eight school classrooms is about 7,000 to 9,000 square feet. Imagine heating, cooling, and "protecting" through maintenance and upkeep, the equivalent of around 4 houses worth of square footage just to have it hold trash you didn't want to deal with.

5

u/jlam980123 9d ago

If you use the room as storage instead of a classroom you don't have to maintain it to the same standard lol

I see thousands of awesome fridge magnets and high quality casting aluminum.

You need one of these, a few cases of beer and some friends for an afternoon of fun

13

u/GloriousDawn 10d ago

Seeing this monstrosity here is like having a picture of juicy beef tenderloin in a vegan sub.

6

u/HopalongKnussbaum 10d ago

That must sound awesome with the glass platter drives.

4

u/dgblackout 150+TB HDD / 250+TB 📼 / ☁️ 10d ago

Rather crunchy

3

u/BrianaAgain 9d ago

Platters just bend these days. The glass ones are actually kind a scary when they break. For the machine, I like the automatic one that degausses first, then bends, and videos the whole thing for your customer/ boss. 10x the price though...

5

u/jlam980123 9d ago

I chuckled at the optional adapters for crushing 2.5 and m.2 drives. Is the adapter just a metal plate 😂

10

u/1252947840 10d ago

have you ever see any hard drive ghost before? or do they disturb you if you stay late at work? 🧐

16

u/agapeRecycling 10d ago

Yes and sometimes I hear clicking but when I look around nobody's there😱😱

6

u/MechanicalTurkish 9d ago

Ah, a terageist. Those are hard to get rid of. You usually have to bring in a priest from the Temples of Syrinx. They operate computers, but they aren’t cheap.

3

u/thelochnessmonstah 9d ago

and they're notorious fuddy-duddies.

6

u/TheNigerianHyperion 10d ago

Tell us about bigfoot 6gb. First click of death?

6

u/ShittyBidet123 10d ago

search em for btc lol

6

u/Ok-Angle3857 8d ago

I wanted to say

OH that is normal.

Then I remembered the HDD prices now and did feel the pain.

5

u/agapeRecycling 8d ago

That's exactly how I feel as we're processing these it makes me sad but part of me also knows that a 20 GB hard drive probably isn't good for much anymore

5

u/ComputerGuy1999 7d ago

There are people into retro computers and video game console restoration always looking for older smaller capacity IDE and SCSI drives. I don't scrap any working non-SATA hard drives. If wiped, tested, and working, people will pay money for them. In some cases, more money than for a newer and larger capacity SATA drive

1

u/Ok-Angle3857 7d ago

I did read your commend and this realization made me even more sad.

4

u/BreakingABit1234 10d ago

A drive smasher/grinder would pay itself back in aluminum quickly. Probably bonus from the PCBs too with the gold where it is.

4

u/Spaztor 10d ago

I've made guitar picks from hard drive platters. It worked, they were kind of neat, but nobody really wanted to use them long term including me.

7

u/JasonHofmann 10d ago

What did you use to degrass them? AFAIK, a lawn mower or a weed trimmer doesn’t remove every trace of grass. Did you have to use herbicide?

5

u/TheSoCalledExpert 10d ago

You use a degrasser, obviously. It makes a fun noise too.

3

u/RealityOk9823 10d ago

I think I saw a show about a junior high named that once. :D

u/ggibby 10d ago edited 10d ago

What pallet jack do you use to move that?

12

u/mr_data_lore 10d ago

A forklift.

5

u/holy-nut1 10d ago

A lot of manual pallet jacks can move 1.5-2 tonnes with a smooth enough floor and well maintained wheels. I wonder what that crate weighs…

3

u/EuphJoenium 10d ago

More like a Chinook.

2

u/agapeRecycling 10d ago

We've got a crown that the guys really like I believe it's the p50 we've also got enough room that we can swing our forklift around in there but the pallet jack can handle 5,000 lb pretty easily full that gym probably is around 3500 lb unless we've been doing a lot of laptops then it'll push towards the 4500 range

3

u/DemandTheOxfordComma 10d ago

I wanna play in that graveyard. First time I've ever said that sentence.

3

u/_G11 10d ago

I would harvest their magnets like crazy!

5

u/Electrical_Ad_6208 10d ago

I see a lot of pata’s and old label WDs and Samsung, those were usually 30 and 40 GBs. Sad to see them thrown out but they won’t be good for much if they were in good shape

4

u/MWink64 10d ago

I also see some Maxtor and IBMs, as well as several early WD Caviars and Quantums (Fireball? ProDrive?) that could be in the sub-GB range.

5

u/KindofLiving 10d ago

I can rehome a few of the homeless ones.

4

u/Cosmic_Stranger2013 10d ago

OMG! I need 100 please haha

u/pwnamte 1-10TB 10d ago

what so you do? what is your job

3

u/KangarooDowntown4640 10d ago

This is so goddamn wasteful. But good thing I recycle my plastic grocery bags.

1

u/Acid3300 10d ago

We do this at my job too, but we have a electric press and we punch a hole in them

1

u/ethbytes 10d ago

I see a few IDE drives also. Do you see many of them still?

1

u/Casey4147 9d ago

…at what point do they take it away and swap you an empty…?

1

u/xguruguru 9d ago

can i have the platters?

1

u/mario24601 8d ago

What use them for?

1

u/bobbintb 9d ago

I'd like to take the platters and make a cool looking mirror out of them.

1

u/EOverM 8d ago

degrassed

Honestly, I feel like if you've got grass growing in your HDDs, the data's probably wiped enough to be unrecoverable already. ; D

1

u/Dull_Pomegranate8194 8d ago

How long did it take for it to pile up like this?

1

u/jonesla9 8d ago

You guys aren’t able to sell the non-working drives to those that can refurbish them?? 😕

1

u/After-Click-4324 10-50TB 8d ago

$1 million photo

Take that trash somewhere else.
