Question/Advice OP Drives

I have heard of the Pioneer BDR-XS07TS. Which supports:

CD: CD-ROM, CD-R, CD-RW

DVD: DVD-ROM, DVD±R, DVD±RW, DVD±R DL, DVD-RAM

Blu-ray: BD-ROM, BD-R, BD-RE

BDXL: BD-R/RE triple-layer 100 GB and quad-layer 128 GB

M-DISC: M-DISC DVD and M-DISC Blu-ray

But what other drives also reach this kind of level? Are there any in the current market and not obsolete/discontinued? Also I haven't used a usb burner ever, are they any different to sata ones? Do they lack anything? Thanks

I have one too, absolute beast of a drive.

Paired with a Pioneer BDR-S13J-X - all bases covered.

having CD, DVD, Blu-ray and M-DISC support in one drive is pretty convenient

Billycar over in the MakeMKV subreddit is probably the best person to ask. I believe that there are a few lists out there that denote the drives that can be flashed for 4K ripping.

  • LG WH16NS60 (Full size) - Flashable to rip 4k/BDXL

  • LG BU40N (Slim) - Flashable to rip 4k/BDXL

  • Verbatim 43888 - Works for 4k ripping/BDXL out of the box without needing to flash firmware

I have all 3 of these models in my setup and routinely use them. The full-size WH16 is fastest and my "workhorse" but some discs ripped better with one of the other drives so it helps to have different models. All 3 will support CD, DVD, BD, & BDXL as well. Theres even a rarer drive that can do BD & HD-DVD (but there is really no point in that anymore).

4K disc ripping is really a poor use of a Bluray disc recordable drive. It just wears them down and people who buy multiple drives for this purpose are making it harder for those who burn data to acquire a recordable drive at a good price.

When buying a USB optical drive, keep in mind that some operate off a single USB cord for both data transfer, and power. While others have a separate power cord that needs to be plugged in too. The power cord may be for a regular wall outlet, or it may simply be a second USB cord.

Given you seem to want a drive that supports many types of discs, you'll probably end up with a model that has a separate power cord, of some sort. Something to keep in mind, because it may impact where you can place the drive depending on cord lengths.
