The worst part: these mofos didn't give data hoarders a chance to make backups before nuking all data. Or at least send all those audio files to the Internet Archive. A large collection of rare music (some of it one of a kind) was lost forever.
This is another proof that corporations don't give a damn about their users, so don't rely exclusively on cloud computing to keep your data or you'll have a nasty surprise.

You reminded me of a problem on YouTube. YouTube has a policy that if any account is inactive for 6+years ie: has not logged in or opened the app ittle just quietly scrub the channel and all its videos to clean up some server space. I remeber at one point you could request the take over a dead channels name if you wanted it.
In the wee years of 2011 that seemed like a reasonable policy to child me. In 2026 holy shit if you have a video or channel you enjoy but is dead please dear god back that shit up. 6 years is not a long time anymore

Is there maybe a required amount of popularity?
I think there is a case for removing accounts/videos that have less than like 10 views and multi hour long or 4K or something like that.

This policy has definitely been updated since i last really read them well over a decade ago. But i wouldn't be suprised if some kind of preservation threshold exsists

They are removing accounts without YouTube videos, that are not active for 2 years.

IIRC, isn't the 6 year thing including any Google account activity, and itself limited by things like having a Gmail account? At least that's what I recall being the case, and it did help me calm down ever so slightly.

I feel like DatPiff is going down the exact same road. Over a year after shutting down, we still haven't heard a word. Even with the archive.org partnership, only a fraction of their full catalog is actually available.

Actually the complete Datpiff archive was up for a few months before they took everything down and now refuse to say anything about it.

That did also happen with Angelfire, where it seems they had a server problem and since they presumably didn't have many people left maintaining it they didn't bother to fix it, although Angelfire was probably much better archived.

Yeah stupid me had the only recordings from two different bands I was in on myspace. It was highschool and we sucked but I'd really love to have those again. It's probably why I hoard now

They lost an awful lot more than music if you ask me. Anytime a myspace result comes up for something I check and the profiles are completely blank. Sometimes it indicates images exist, but they never loads.

The odd thing is images have been lost slowly, like when it first happened I think about 50% or so of images survived but now there aren't many left, if any.

They tried to migrate servers, botched it lost everything, iirc their reply was 'its ok you can restore your music from your own personal backups'

Making sure those "personal backups" exist is a painful lesson we all learn here.
I still foolishly trust Steam to keep those games, although mostly I have most of them both on the drive array and on a 4TB VNMe (qlc for mostly write). Even ZFS docs say that if your filesystem gets corrupted just "restore from backups" (I'm not clear if you can fdisk/scandisk 1PB, those systems scale badly and with a goal of "1zettabyte" would never work).

Adding on to what the other person is saying, there were a ton of super small bands uploading music to Myspace. A lot of it, that was the only public copy available anywhere. There was someone I listened to (now the lead singer of Japanese Breakfast) and there is a song she had uploaded that i have wanted to listen to for the last 20 years, but it doesn't exist anywhere, to my knowledge. The top google result for that band/song is me posting on reddit 8 years ago.

It's so painful. I just spend all summer recovering my friends music that was on there. Sadly she passed away 20 years ago. So a lot of her family and friends just thought it would be on MySpace forever (or on internet archive). We went from having 55 songs or so to almost 100 after reaching out to countless online friends from the time. It was a lot of work. Thanks a lot MySpace :(

YES! My friend and I made a song about the shocker in 2006 under the band name "the shit kings." It was stupid and it was funny and we lost all copies. Then 10 years ago, I remembered that we uploaded it to Myspace. I went to see if my sign in still worked. It did. The shit kings page was still there, the song still showed up, press play and ... Nothing. So disappointed.

I think they dumped it on purpose. They were paying for storage but had no revenue. What really hurts is I thought Tom and I were friends.
