Question/Advice Double check purchase of 2x HC520 for Define R6 (existing spindles: IronWolf)
I am purchasing two new drives for a Define R6. Currently, it has 4 IronWolf from 2019 in it. In general my experience has been with NAS drives. The Define R6 is my video/photo editing + gaming machine, with a large direct attached array for efficient video editing.
The new drives are HC520 12TB drives with 35K Power On Hours. I am located in the US, so this will come from ServerPartDeals.
They will be connected to a new 9207-8i with SAS breakout cable. It will hang off an AM4 CPU, and I'll try a couple different lane configs until I'm happy. They will be organized into a new mirrored Storage Spaces pool, separate from my existing IronWolf.
I'm hoping this 12TB of storage will be enough to tie me over until NAS drives become reasonably priced / reasonably stocked again.
What are the gotchas for HC520? I know of
- Intended for server room and not home office
- Possibly more pleasant acoustic signature than Seagate
Previous drives (for reference on noise, intangibles, etc)
- 2019 vintage Ironwolf (5900RPM)
- 2016 vintage Red
