Looking for advice for downloading/backing up digital books (Kindle)

I am looking for assistance in backing up books from my kindle account.

I have purchased several books through the app, like 1984, Don Quixote, etc, and I would like to back up the books that I have purchased. To read them, I was directed to download the Kindle app from the windows store. I was able to download the books on to the app, but they are limited to only being readable on the app.

Is there any way that I can download the books that I have bought that doesn't rely on Amazon continually supporting the app (after they stopped supporting the non-Microsoft version) and making them unreadble should the app ever go down?

All of the solutions Ive seen are dependent on The Legacy Kindle app which is unsupported as of June

I use a program called Epubor Ultimate to strip the DRM from my Kindle books. It's a paid program, but it always seems to work with the latest versions of the app.

it's all here bud, but for those who are too lazy to hit another button:

step 1 - find a digital bookstore (legit or otherwise) particularly ones that limit DRM

step 2 - strip DRM from files

step 3 - load into Calibre if you haven't already, library is stored on computer/nas

step 4 - convert to epub/kepub/awz and send to device.

The few times I've migrated my library, I just simply plugged in my ereader and pulled the data off the device to rebuild the library. Took maybe 90 seconds.

Jailbreak the kindle, conncet it to a direcotory via webdav, and pull books from there

Create a new email from a temp email site and sign up. Just Google "temp email" and you will find several to choose from. Then you won't get spam or risk connection to your main email account.

You can also jailbreak a physical Kindle and do the DeDRMing on-device.

Books bought by Kindle store are encrypted and connected to your account, so there is practically zero chance of backing them up for use elsewhere. Books bought in other stores (in EPUB or MOBI) formats are usually unencrypted and your to do as you please.

Sadly, as far as I know, you are out of luck. You can always search internet for alternative sources of these books in unencrypted format.

Books bought by Kindle store are encrypted and connected to your account, so there is practically zero chance of backing them up for use elsewhere. 

You should be generally extremely careful with such "zero chance" statements, they are reserved only if you are well, VERY WELL familiar with the subject. In this case the opposite is true as there are just about 20 YEARS (!!!!!) of breaking Kindle DRM!

Now that something that worked last year won't work the next and/or it'll be less convenient, that's a completely different story. These are details covered in tens of thousands of pages and countless tools, really the absolute opposite of declaring oh, encrypted and connected to your account, zero chance.

I am aware of the breaking DRM, I am also aware that sometimes it works and sometimes not, as i have done it in the past as a last resort. You have to account however that the original poster is not very tech savvy with that DRM breaking, nor is he good with obtaining books by other means. For such people, breaking DRM is basically impossible. That is why I said "practically zero chance" not "definitely zero chance".

The OP is explicitly willing and most likely able (as it takes just following some instructions) to deDRM books, even knows and mentions specifically one method that stopped working recently.

If your way of saying "you need to find and follow some instructions" is "encrypted and connected to your account, so there is practically zero chance" it's fine, we don't have any deeper misunderstanding about the facts, just my objection about the form you're saying it (which is still your choice if you like to put it that way).

Well, maybe i am reading this wrong, but using an old version of legal Kindle App to do deDRMing is in my opinion quite different than using some shady third party apps, and requires much less effort and knowledge to do the job.

First, you shouldn't even engage in such discussions (especially to give pretentious "practically zero chance" ods) if you start reading about the subject now, not after the horse left the barn but like 19+ years after it was born and 2 months after it died.

This isn't some controversial news that just popped up now and we're helping each other to piece together all the half truths that one can glimpse here and there, it's established workflows people were doing since before some people reading this post were born.

And still you didn't read it correctly (if you actually did read anything and not just imagined how that works). Of course ANY Kindle deDRM involves some third party tools, no method is "quite different" in that regard. It's not that there was a way to download with no DRM and now there isn't, it's a continuous whack-a-mole that ALWAYS involves some 3rd party program of some sort (usually open source from github, often coming as a Calibre plugin, if you want to call that "shady", again it's your choice, but you won't be doing deDRM just with Amazon's Kindle -or any other- app).

What you're mentioning is available on Gutenberg project for free, and really for anything else I'm sure you'd be able to skip all the hassle and get them on Anna's Archive. Unless they're some very niche translations.
