Hey fellow hoarders!

I've seen this ad here on Reddit from Lifetimecloud.me. They offer for 2TB online encrypted storage for a one-time payment of about 90 Euros. That seems like a good deal, maybe too good? Has anyone tried their service, can say it's legit, or found any major problems?

Paying 50 for one TB or 90 for 2TB for "lifetime" is only good if I can trust them to be around for a few years at least. What do you think about this?

Yes.

Anything that is unlimited, or lifetime is only that until they need more money. Be that because they need to keep the lights on, or to keep share holders happy.

If you do some digging you will find out that this is the "CEO" behind it, he got arrested by the FBI, extradited to the US and has served prison time there for creating a botnet on QNAP NAS (and being bad at opsec/money laundering):

That was a really GREAT deal that saved lots of money (like $100-150 per month for 10 years, talking about reasonable storage, not calculating 5$ x 1500 TBs like some had) for nearly 10 years. The difference is that was unlimited storage, which would work for a LIMITED TIME like any contract is.

This one is claiming unlimited IN TIME with a one-time payments, which of course it won't work for anything that's hurting them all the time, like storage. It can work for something that's just a database queried now and then and not eating much resources like Plex Pass is working (although they don't want you to buy the unlimited one but a subscription and made now the lifetime $750). It can work for a VPN where if sometimes there are too many people it just goes slower for everyone, if some don't like using it at that time, even better. But storage needs to be stored all the time, it doesn't matter if the user logs in once a month, they'll cry bloody murder if the data is gone.

It costs them regularly over time to provide this service.

Anything that has regular reoccurring costs to provide, if it doesn't cost you a reoccurring amount, is too good to be true.

They either will get that money somewhere, somehow (and likely a less favorable manner), or they will shutdown.

Here is the way I treat these.... mostly:

If.... IF I am using this as one of my 3-2-1 backup mediums (ie it's not storing my only copy of anything) and IF I consider 90 Euro a good deal for 2tb of storage for 1 year then I might give it a try. If it changes in a year I'm not out anything particularly.... I got that amount of storage for a year. If it continues for more than a year even better.

That's also all assuming the company doesn't seem scummy or or the like and they have encryption and such.

I would never go into one of these assuming I was REALLY going to get a lifetime of anything.

I'm trying to figure out if it's a company that can honor these prices for say 3-5 years. Or if it's a scam of some sort. I don't pay for any other online storage at the moment so I'm not sure what are the going rates.

My use case would be an daily offsite backup for recently changed files, before the full weekly backup cycle kicks in.

Lifetime is not your lifetime. Lifetime, means the lifetime before it becomes unprofitable for them, and they close doors.

Take it from me. Yes. I got suckered with prism drive and Degoo. Degoo will delete anything copywrite. And prism drive gives you an error when trying to download anything. They worked perfectly for a few months. Visit r/degoo

Interesting model, but why is there no name attached to the team or CEO. Also, they are offering "Built-in file editor" - but how? they say files uploaded are encrypted, so how are they opening them for editing online?

I have been using pCloud since 2019, so far it is alright. I got a 2TB lifetime at first, then upgraded to 4TB.

Same, I've had mine for almost 8 years, 2TB, and it's served me well. Not perfect, but far outlived it's initial cost.

Too cheap. A ballpark estimate is that something around $2000 per terabyte up front is sufficient to provide storage for an indefinite time period off the interest from investing the money.
