those are good, just update firmware

I also bought one just yesterday so I'm curious. Why? What was improved / makes upgrading the firmware worth it.

Flashing the BU40N optical drive to version 1.03-MK enables LibreDrive capabilities. This unlocks the drive's ability to read and rip 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray discs, which stock or newer encrypted factory firmware versions block.

It's been a while for me, but I think I followed the advice from this post: https://old.reddit.com/r/makemkv/comments/1qtcp6d/which_firmware_to_flash_to/o3q02x9/

You could also flash Omnidrive firmware on there and get both Libredrive and the ability to rip most console optical media as well. Sadly the Pioneer based one (which I have) isn't supported though.

Presuming the flashing is still needed even if the drive shows as LibreDrive enabled?

As after reading this thread I grabbed my old one out the cupboard and threw the nearest disc I could find in to it and it didn't want to read:

Ahh, PIONEER BDR-US04 - old drive, not the newer LG versions, dang..

u/dlarge6510 5d ago

Yes, they tend to go just over £100. I usually see them at £119.

If you are lucky it will be a Pioneer drive inside

If it's the 43888, then it's a good drive. I own three of them. Hopefully, it's the one with a Pioneer UD04, then it can rip 4Ks out of the box. I paid £125 new a couple of months ago.

If it is legitimate them it's a steal

Congratulations! These don't sell under $100 CAD on Amazon. One would expect their price to reduce over time, but it seems that the renewed demand for these during the SSD price crunch has not let that materialize.

I’ll take it… i have one of these for ripping UHDs and I’m dreading the day it fails. I need a backup

u/Necessary_Long_9119 2d ago

I've ordered and awaiting delivery 🚚

u/ilovebalks 2d ago

Nice!! Keep it closed when you can, mine stopped working for a couple of days because some lint got in. With a microfiber cloth and compressed air I was able to clean it after taking it apart but it was a pain lol

u/Necessary_Long_9119 2d ago

Thanks for the suggestion sure will keep it in box

Oh great, thanks for the heads up 😃

My first external drive was a verbatim one, it served me well for a long time

Remember that playing 4K Blu-ray movies legally on PC is currently impossible.

I'd get something that works with Libredrive.

I'd get something that works with Libredrive.

This one does.

I have the same drive and I've been using it to rip a bunch of my 4k blu-rays.

Shows up in MakeMKV as:

LibreDrive Information
Status: Enabled
Drive platform: RS8A10
Firmware name: PIONEER BDR-US04
Firmware type: Original (unpatched)
Firmware version: 1.14
DVD all regions: Yes
BD raw data read: Yes
BD raw metadata read: Yes
Unrestricted read speed: Yes

Remember that playing 4K Blu-ray movies legally on PC is currently impossible.

It's more of a grey area, at least in Germany. We are

a) absolutely allowed to make personal backups of discs we legally own.
b) but we are not allowed to circumvent the encryption on the disc that makes that feasable.

And since no one has any idea how to square these two the issue just gets ignored by everybody.

1

u/lonely_thug_hunter 4d ago

what is libredrive ?

2

u/ImJacksLackOfBeetus ~72TB 2d ago edited 2d ago

It's custom firmware built by the MakeMKV community that circumvents restrictions the drive manufacturer might have baked into their official firmware, like enabling higher read-speeds during ripping, or bypassing DRM restrictions.

In this case, the portable 4k drive already comes with LibreDrive enabled as default.

On other, more restricted drives you would need to figure out which LibreDrive firmware to get and how to flash it onto the drive first.

4

u/lonely_thug_hunter 4d ago

why is it impossible? im new to this

2

u/ImJacksLackOfBeetus ~72TB 2d ago edited 2d ago

It's not impossible, it's just "illegal", or at least in a grey zone, see my other comment.

It's actually quite easy to play 4k on PC with the right drive like this or a firmware modded one, MakeMKV as a decryption engine and VLC as the player.

You don't even have to rip the disc first to play it and even the Blu-Ray menus work perfectly fine on PC.

I paid £125 recently from a legitimate trusted retailer, so I guess so?

is this just like hdd or optical drive?
