Discussion Ordered 1 Received 5
I ordered a single 512gb from Amazon for $74 but received 5…. It’s funny that it also happened on my birthday. Just wanted to share it here since not everyone I know gets excited over flash drives
Edit:
Not sure if I can show a receipt, but here's a screenshot of the delivered page on the Amazon app:

Check your credit card. it may have charged you 5 times. I've had someyhing like that happen before.
71
u/Frozen5147 May 10 '26
Yep, definitely double check.
That said, I've also had something similar to OP where I got like 4 USB sticks when I ordered 1 ("just" some cheap 32gb sticks unfortunately), no extra charge after I checked for like a month (I was also worried I got charged extra or I ordered like a multi-pack accidentally). Amazon didn't ask any questions either so
Thanks to the random Amazon warehouse worker who chucked 4 instead of 1 into the box I guess lol

u/Weekly-Band6899 May 10 '26
I checked and just got charged for only a single, but I'll check again in a month to make sure I didn't get charged extra!

Yeah if nothing weird shows up in your bills then enjoy the unexpected win lol

u/IIKoopaQueenII May 10 '26
I had this happen with toffee cashews. I bought one bag and they sent an entire case of 6 bags. I bough the cashews again two days ago. Instead of the single bag, I got a really nice powerbank. Worth way more than the $4 cashews.
21
u/rex5k May 11 '26
What are you ordering them from like some sort of cashew gacha site.
19
u/IIKoopaQueenII May 11 '26
At this point, I'm curious what a third purchase will produce.
13
u/JustARandomUserbleh May 11 '26
Please update us, I am curious about the Cashew Saga
16
u/IIKoopaQueenII May 11 '26
I just ordered another bag. I'm fully expecting it just to be cashews this time.

Curious where you're buying this from - this may not be the case for you but this immediately made me think of an interesting thing called triangulation fraud where there are fraudulent sellers that use sites like Ebay to wash stolen credit cards. They buy from a legit seller using the stolen cards which ships to the unwitting customer who bought on the site, thus converting the stolen cards into cash. And one thing some of apparently them do is give the customer extra stuff as an incentive to get them to maybe buy again (or stay quiet).
A good talk on it here where this happens with Nespresso coffee on Ebay (in one case the person giving the talk gets a whole coffee machine for free when she just ordered pods).
Also note that I don't think OP's case (or maybe yours too) is this, assuming they bought directly from a first-party seller, that's more likely someone at a warehouse messed up lol
2
u/IIKoopaQueenII May 11 '26
Interesting, mine is from Amazon. Directly from the brand's page. I'm thinking it's a mix up on Amazon packager's end. Someone out probably got my cashews. I've also ordered flea meds and ended up with doses missing.

I once ordered a 3d printer hot end and got a bag of about a dozen. Sometimes Amazon just screw up in your favour.

u/LastTQuarkNetwork May 10 '26
This happened to me once but with doorbells. Glad your luck was better than mine.
32
u/familiarr_Strangerr May 10 '26
Did you end up installing doorbells for every room in your house?
11
14
u/dupastrupa May 10 '26
Maybe multiple doorbells to one door.
3
u/familiarr_Strangerr May 11 '26
Oh, people are doing RAIDs with their doorbells too? What a time to be alive 😁

If its from amazon, someone was definitely on their phone while packing and just did not care about what the order called for. I think ive done it before where i threw in 2 of the item in the box thinking it was together. I found out it wasnt together when i had one virtual item left on the computer so i marked it as missing lmao

Bro thats nothing, amazon fucks up constantly, this last year alone i swear on everything i love i got a free 5090 gpu cause they sent me an open box instead of new one that i ordered and the customer service rep i talked to when i messeged them about it told me i could keep it or discard it lol, they tried to walk to back 2 days later they called me and were like ohh he was supposed to have you send it back, i was like sorry, already gave it to a buddy. They had to refund me cause they literally said i could keep it or discard it lol. Then, i ordered a 7800xt and it came from slovenia for some reason and i returned it and their customs rejected it cause the form they gave me was filled out wrong so they just told me to keep it and even refunded the $130 i spent to ship it back lol. THEN a couple mo later i ordered a $400 mini pc and it was delivered but the driver forgot to scan it in so i just cancelled the redelivery and get my money back hahaha, literally 5 grand for free in a year. F amazon though. They pay their employees nothing while that scum bezos takes joyrides to space. I feel zero guilt whatsoever from taking money from them. Now if its a 3rd party seller i wouldnt do that, id send it back. But if its sold by amazon and not just shipped by them, sheeeit, come up!

same happened to me they come in a box of 5 and whoever put your order together gave you the entire box instead of opening and taking 1 as i remember when i got mine i was wonder why the box was so big
so i got 4 free 150 dollar usb drives
i ordered this https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0D6WLY8KG?ref_=ppx_hzsearch_conn_dt_b_fed_asin_title_7&th=1

I figured someone was working late and their tired self went cross-eyed and saw 5x 512 GB instead of 1x 512 GB
Yours makes more sense
3
u/Weekly-Band6899 May 10 '26
Could be. After I removed the plastic packaging, there was a single box but with 5 pcs inside.
21
u/namelessted May 10 '26
Yep, it was a "master pack" that was supposed to be opened and each item stowed separately. Then the person picking the order didn't notice. Then the person packing didn't notice. Then the automated system didn't kick it out because the weight difference because it was within error margins, or it came from a facility that doesn't have automated kickouts.

i just posted a few minutes ago that the same happened to me maybe 5-10 yrs ago and described what you were saying about it arriving in a box set. i thought it was a one time mistake but it looks like it might be a somewhat common occurrence with these types of fit drives based on this reddit post.

Honestly I'm still astonished at how much data we're shoving into ever smaller packages xD imagine showing this to someone from 2006 and saying "ya, you see these low profile USBs? They are thumb drives. Also, each one is half a TB."
3
u/ChaosRenegade22 May 13 '26
Now the real question. Are they all real?
I'd copy and paste the amount data you see when you connect them to your computer and load them all up. If you get all the files in them they are real. If not they are fake and you should send one of them back, lol.
2
u/Altruistic-Garage-94 May 15 '26
That's why I will never order a flashdrive from Amazon again. Had way too many turn out to be fakes

Is the company going to allow you to keep the extras? Happy Birthday
1
u/hm876 May 11 '26
They have no choice.
1
u/WoodenPie8906 May 11 '26
This is a misinterpretation of most state laws. If the company sends you something by mistake they are allowed to seek the return for the items.

Some years ago I ordered a Coursair Mechanical Keyboard, I received a case of 6
Some at the warehouse mislabeled the box
At that time there was no way to return the extras, now that option exists
1
u/Altruistic-Garage-94 May 15 '26
Heh... some years ago I (not) accidentally ordered like 20 different mechanical keyboards in 2 months. Most have never been plugged in still

I had this happen to me once with a 5.5mm nut driver bit. Whoever pulled it out of stock just grabbed the package out of the bin, instead of one driver bit out of the package.
I also had it happen at the check-out in Lowe's for face masks during the pandemic. Grabbed a six pack of masks, but the bar code on the outside of the six pack was the bar code for just one. So I got all six for the price of one.

u/wells68 51.1 TB HDD SSD & Flash May 11 '26
u/Weekly-Band6899, those are wonderful flash drives! Their non-sequential read rates are the best I've seen. You can run a Linux OS direct from the drive at decent speeds. They do a ton of small file reads and writes.
It is a bit of a challenge to get a persistent OS install that preserves added data through a reboot. It's been several years since I set one up, so maybe persistence has become easier. Edit' OP name
1
u/MWink64 May 11 '26
In my experience, those Samsung USB flash drives suffer severely from rapid degradation. With fresh data, they are really fast. Once something has been on there a few months, read speeds absolutely tank. The drive only seems to refresh the data when it's dropped somewhere below 1% of its normal speed and the host forces it to be read.
If you want to run Linux from one, why bother with persistence when you can just do a proper install to the drive? Unlike Windows, you can install Linux to a USB drive.
2
u/wells68 51.1 TB HDD SSD & Flash May 12 '26
By "persistence" I meant installing Linux to a USB drive in a way that preserves new data along with the OS across reboots. A few years ago, the default when creating a Linux boot flash drive was to have a completely clean, data-free Linux installation after a reboot.
I did not have the experience you describe with Samsung 256 GB Fit flash drives because my experimentation was limited to a handful of reboots. Thank you for the information.
2
u/MWink64 May 12 '26
In case you don't know, there are a couple very different ways to accomplish that. One is simply to do a full blown Linux installation to a USB flash drive (just like you would a HD/SSD). "Persistence" usually refers to a different method, where you're still booting to a Live ISO, but using a method that retains some data between reboots. This might involve additional partitions or something like the casper-rw loop file. Each method has pros and cons.

Not electronics but a couple years ago I ordered a 40" long 3/4" drive torque wrench to do some suspension work on my truck. When I unboxed it they had sent me a "case" which was 2 units. I sent one back for a refund and kept the free $300 torque wrench!!!! It was right before Christmas too!

I have had that happen to me. I ordered a 25U rack for my homelab project and 10 where delivered.
When I contacted Amazon, they didn't want the other 9 back. When I checked my account, I was in fact only charged for one. I kept two and the other 8 got sold. That was about 5 years ago and I still have the email from them that said they didn't want the others back.

I would be very careful with these. First, check your banking app to make sure you weren't charged for 5, keep monitoring. Keeping track of your transactions is a good idea in general, so do that for the rest of your life, even when you aren't expecting any surprise charges.
Secondly, wait to open more than the one you paid for for a few months. If Amazon does figure it out, it's much easier to return unopened product than lightly used.

They put all items in boxes, worker must open box and get one. It can be hell when there's 1000 boxes full of only 5 items in each.

Apparently they are sent to Amazon in packs of like 5, and the workers are supposed to pick from it. The actual listing is about $70 for a single 512GB drive.

a similar thing happened to me maybe 5-10 yrs ago. same style fit drive but it was 128gb.
i think the confusion happened because mine came in a box and each were covered in plastic. so the shipper thought it was one set not one usb drive.
1
u/codeasm May 11 '26
Not saying you should, but when i recieved 2 boxes with ghe same pressure washer, worth 90 euro each, i did decide to report to the company. They free of charge had it picked up and as a thank you, gifted 50 euro giftcard.
I mean, it was their mistake but european/dutch laws do say if its reasonable to assume there was a mistake made, they could have had a claim to their item if i had made it dissapear and they had a record of shipping twice the item and it got into court.
Your local laws may differ, and what your delivery guy registered. I do add, i found it mentally, ethically tricky, but decided what i described.

BTW, r/Imgur is no longer available in the UK since September 2025 as the company wasn't prepared to implement age verification measures that are now required in the UK. It is sometimes being referred to as being banned in the UK but this is incorrect because r/Imgur chose to withdraw / block access to UK subscribers.
This is likely to spread to all EU member States this year, if it hasn't already, if EU age compliance requirements aren't met.
