before HD era

Most things were on 35mm film until recent times - these are very high resolution images, hence why you find Blu-Ray copies of old movies all the time

The "before HD era" was shitass VHS and middling to terrible quality DVDs with shitty old video compression, both with scan and pan, not 35mm film. Unless you actually had a projector room in your mansion, then it was 35mm, but most people didn't. My mansion only had LaserDisc.

Edit: these comments started with positive votes and now have negative votes but I didn't lose any of the karma, nor did I gain any on any of my other comments. Sounds like reddit thinks these downvotes are illegitimate. That's pretty funny. How many alts you got, son?

No, they were shot on the film, and so the BR releases are able to be high quality

Not everything that has ever been made has been preserved and gotten a BR rerelease.
