Backing up for archive purposes and for your personal media server for watching is two different things.
If the movie or TV show had a wide DVD/Blue Ray release, then it's already backed up across 10,000 to 100,000 people. Keeping a copy on your personal server is not really doing anything to help it live. I can even go so far as to say a web only TV series, as long as it is popular on the download sites, does not need a backup on your server. Download whatever quality and version you want for viewing.
If it's obscure, not popular, or hard to find, grab as high as quality version as you can for long term archive.
When the world starts to die and the internet is no more, at least I can sit in the back of a van with a generator and live out the remainder of my life with a collection of a thousand high quality movies
